With 24 HCP between them, E/W will do well to get to game on this hand. As both 3NT and 4 will make, playing in game will be crucial. If East's suit were a minor suit, then opening 1NT would be acceptable, but it is rarely right to do so with a six card major. I expect that most experts would double with the South hand, despite holding only three s, but that many other players will pass. If South doubles, West might bid either 1 or 1NT. In any case, whether South bids or not, West will have to deal with an invitational 3 bid from East. West has only 8 HCP, but they hand is fairly prime. It will be hardest for West to raise to game when South has doubled, expecting that the minor suit cards are placed poorly for their side, and that the long suit is unlikely to be useful. If West does decide to bid again, 3NT is not a bad choice, hoping that there will be six running tricks and three other top tricks. At IMPS, it seems clear to bid game, but it certainly isn't terrible to pass 3 at matchpoints.

In a 4 contract, South is almost certain to lead a high , which will make things easy for declarer. Declarer can pull trump and set up the Jack for a pitch and only lose the top three minor suit tricks. If South somehow finds a major suit lead, declarer will have some choices to make and might go wrong, but realistically, this will not happen. If West declares a NT contract, nine tricks will be available on any lead, but if South leads a black suit, declarer might end up with 10 tricks for a top.

  1. Transfer
  2. Willing to play 2
  3. Asking for keycards outside of diamonds (Exclusion)
  4. One keycard, no queen of trump

Normally with 14 HCP, three tens paired with other honors, and a five card suit, it would be right to upgrade the South hand and open 1NT. However, with no Aces, and a lack of quick tricks, it isn't as clear in this case. North is likely to drive to slam whatever South opens, but might be disappointed that a grand is not available if South opens 1NT. Is South does open 1NT, several interesting bidding concepts might come into play. North will start with a transfer to s, and East will often double this for a lead. Do you and your partner know what you play if the opponents double your artificial bid over 1NT? The answer is often dependent on whether they have double Stayman or a transfer. One reasonable agreement is to use a redouble to indicate you are willing to play the current contract, accept the transfer if you hold either a fit, or a stopper (i.e. guaranteeing that you have a good place to play if partner has a good hand) and passing if you have neither a fit nor a stopper. Whatever the N/S agreements North should next show their suit, and after getting confirmation of a fit from South will need to decide what to do next. One agreement used by many experts is something known as "Exclusion Blackwood". Under this agreement, a jump to the five level of a new suit asks partner to indicate how many keycards they have, excluding the Ace of the suit being used to ask. The standard step responses are zero keycards, one without the queen of trump, one with the queen of trump, two without the queen of trump and two with the queen of trump. On this hand, North will be hoping to find South with the KQ and the King and bid a grand, but on the actual hand will have to settle for 6 when the Queen is missing. Note that even if you don't play exclusion, I think it is worth bidding regular blackwood on this hand even with the void, rather than just jumping to 6. After all, if South has the Ace, KQ and K you will be able to bid 7 even though the Ace is worthless.

An alternate, perhaps better way to for North to bid is to bid 3 over 3. Now, when South bids 4, North will know this is the King, as South cannot have shortness and open 1NT. So, North can jump to 5NT, a bid known as the "Grand Slam Force." This bid will tell South to bid 7 if they have two of the top three honors. In any case, 6 is the best contract on this hand. Declarer will make 12 tricks even if they get trump wrong and 13 tricks if they get s right. In a NT contract, declarer will make 11 tricks if they get s wrong and otherwise will make 12 or 13. Note, though that a NT contract also depends on s breaking, and a contract does not.

Despite having only 10 working HCP, I think the West hand is worth opening. The vulnerability is friendly, the hand has 2.5 quick tricks on defense and no rebid problems (I would rebid 2 if partner responded 1NT.) If West passes originally, E/W might not get to game, particularly if North opens the bidding. So, a NT partscore or game might be declared either way by E/W. Assuming the bidding is as shown, South will not have an easy opening bid choice, but on any opening lead, declarer should be able to make at least nine tricks. Let's say south leads the Jack, ducked around to the Queen. Declarer can win the Queen, lead a to the Jack and then a , eventually getting two tricks in each black suit, four tricks and at least one trick. If, instead, declarer decide to tackle the suit, it might get a little trickier. North can win any finesse and lead a high , and now declarer is in trouble. Nine tricks might still make, but it's certainly to see that declarer might end up losing two , two and one trick. Any declarer who manages to make more than nine tricks should do very well. Given that some will not get to game when West passes initially, just getting to game and making nine tricks should be above average.

  1. 1 or 4 keycards
  2. Do you have the trump queen?
  3. Yes, and the diamond king, but not the spade king

N/S should be able to get to 6 on this hand, though the contract will be a little dicier than expected when East has a natural lead. After North opens 1 and rebids 2 over South's 2 bid, South will have a choice to make. With a running suit, it's possible that NT is the best contract, and certainly a slam is still possible. So, some will consider bidding either 3 or 2NT with the South hand. But, with honor doubleton in s, a ruffing value, and a source of quick pitches, bidding 3 looks best. For some pairs, 2 does not promise a sixth , and South should bid 2NT, allowing North to show support, or confirm a sixth . Once the fit is known, both sides have a good hand, and after some cue bidding, and maybe some asking about keycards, N/S should arrive in 6.

East should lead a high against a 6 contract and should probably make the same lead against a game if South has shown s. This lead will not be good news for North and at first it looks like North will need the 3-3 break in order to get their losers pitched, or the player with the doubleton to have the singleton Ace. However, declarer should not get lazy and just overtake the Jack to run the s. Instead, declarer can cash the Jack and lead a to the King and then lead high s. Why is this better? Because, West might have started with a doubleton and two s including the Ace. After playing the Jack of s, a to the King and the Ace, West would be forced to ruff the third round of s low, and now declarer can ruff their good Queen in dummy to lead a fourth high , which West will have to ruff with the Ace while declarer is pitching their last loser. If declarer overtakes the Jack, they won't have a fourth high to cash in the scenario just described. On the actual hand, with s breaking 3-3, 6 will make even if declarer makes the poor play of overtaking the Jack. On any lead other than a , 12 tricks will be easy, even with the poor trump break.
