  1. 18-19 high card points
  2. penalty

This week starts off with a "bad luck" deal. Often say on such a deal I was "fixed" but typically being fixed is when someone makes a bid or play that is against the field and it turns out to be fortuitous. A bad luck deal is when players typically do what is expected playing with the field and it turns out badly. Bad luck deals are not really uncommon in bridge. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North deals and opens the bidding 1. After two passes West holding 10 hcp and a good spade suit balances into the auction with 1. North's rebid of 3 is a special bid ... if the auction had gone 1 - 1 any by partner (6-9 hcp) | the 3 jump rebid would have shown 15-17 hcp and good rebiddable club suit ... but in this auction South passes 1 (not 6 hcp), so North's jump rebid MUST show better values (18-19 hcp) than if partner had responded but is ONLY invitational. We know North's hand is limited as North did not make a strong and forcing 2 opening showing 22+ hcp nor did North reopen with a cue bid of 2 which might show 20-21 hcp and create a forcing auction.

West holding 10 support points for spades plus holding the KJ, despite North's strong rebid, raises to 3 most should. South doubles for penalty.

Play: North has a simple opening lead, North is not going to lead away from the AQJ or AQJ nor will North lead a spade into a trump suit where partner must be holding length and values. Thus leading the A and then the 10 (asking for the return of hearts) seems pretty easy. This deal might be played out a number of ways, double dummy says down two, the play here is down three. 1. 2/1 Game Force
  2. shows extra values
  3. control in clubs
  4. RKC Blackwood
  5. 2 key cards & Q

I think this should be an easy slam to bid, but this might be an "agreement fix" (see explanation of fix on Bd 1). Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1 and South responds 2 as 2/1 game forcing. If East bids 2NT, Unusual notrump for the minors, South will bid 3 forcing the auction. In the auction here North rebids 3, bypassing a rebid of 2 or 2NT, and thus, should show some extra values. South bids 3 showing a 3-card holding with game forcing values. Some might rebid hearts here in which case the auction will be different. North bids 4 which has to be some kind of control, might be void or A or even maybe K below game level. South bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and North responds 5 showing 2 keycards and the Q. Now easy for South to bid to bid 6.

NOTE: If N/S play standard Blackwood North will show 2 aces and not knowing about the Q, South might just bid 5 missing slam.

With favorable vulnerability (white vs. red) I don't like N/S letting E/W play for 4. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East deals and opens 1, South overcalls 2 (and game is on). West makes a negative double with the plans to bid spades showing a hand with spades, and yet, not the values to bid 2 directly over 2. North raises clubs and East makes a cooperative double showing willingness to bid on or penalize clubs. West happy to see partner in the bidding bids 4 and when West without the values to penalize club, bids 4, North bids 5 and East passes leaving the final decision to West who doubles.

  1. denotes a Reverse
  2. shows a singleton or void in spades

Bidding to a minor suit slam typically presents the same problems over and over and over, that being the partnership must first look for contracts in majors suit and notrump. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East opens the bidding 1 (N/S pass throughout) and West responds 1 and East rebids 2 showing a reverse (strong 4-4-4-1 are really hard to bid) with longer diamonds than hearts but unless East wants to make a Jump Shift in clubs, 2 is about the only forcing bid available to East.

The bidding on this deal is very good, just unlucky (see comments on Bd 1 about unlucky deals.) Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East opens the bidding 2 and when partner responds 2 (forcing or waiting) opener jumps to 3. The jump to a major like this sets the trump and allows the bidding to proceed knowing the contract is going to played in hearts. In the auction here, West makes an invitation to slam in hearts and East bids 6.

Play: The play of 6 is just unlucky. All that was needed was for declarer to get a second entry to dummy. This could have been from hearts splitting or the Q winning on the opening lead ... but down one. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com
