I hope some of you are enjoying ACBL's awesome fall nationals in San Diego, but for those who are at home, supporting their local clubs, here is some analysis from sunny Southern California. N/S should be able to get to 4 at most tables. North has a normal 1 opening. Most experts will open 1 whenever 3-3 in the minors, rather than opening their "better" three card suit. If North opens 1 instead, not only will East have a harder time getting into the bidding, but South will not think that their side has a double fit in the blacks, and might stop short of game. On a more normal 1 opening, the bidding should proceed something like shown above, with South checking back for three card support, and bidding game knowing that the shortness is working, the suit fits well with partner, ad the Ace is likely to be placed well if needed. As it happens, declarer does not even need a good break in the suit, as the suit will provide pitches, and declarer will only have to bring in the trump suit for a single loser. With the suit breaking 3-2, this will be easy, and declarer should make 10 tricks, losing only one trick each in s, s and s.

Both E/W contracts and N/S contracts are possible on this hand though N/S have to be careful, as West will likely double if N/S compete to 3. East would prefer that some of their minor suit cards were in their long suits, but still has a normal 1 opening. The West is so poor that I would normally not suggest even thinking about overcalling 2. A two level overcall should show either a six card suit, a good five card suit, or significant extra values. In this case, West does have some extra values, but also, the vulnerability is favorable, so bidding 2 isn't bad, but be aware, that in general, this is not at all the sort of suit you want to overcall with at the two level. On this particular hand, North will probably eke out a 2 bid, but also might eye the vulnerability and pass. East should raise to 3 whether North bids or not. South will want to compete with a 5-5 hand, but will again face the flaw of having too many honors in the minors and should just let E/W play in 3. West should certainly double 3. In 3, there are only five top losers, but declarer has to get s set up and avoid getting out of trump. As it happens, the North Jacks will be useful for this, and with careful play, declarer can get out for down one, but this will be a poor score if doubled. (Yes, double dummy E/W can hold declarer to seven tricks if West leads a trump, but this seems unlikely to happen.)

In a contract, declarer has three losers in the majors, so a 3 contract will depend on only losing one trump trick. With south having opened the bidding, starting with the Queen will be a good play, but cashing the Ace will also work on the actual hand. The only bad play in trump will be if declarer starts with a low trump to the queen. This does not look like the percentage play given the opening bid by South and will result in two trump tricks for the defense and a poor result for N/S.

Although this hand might pass out at some tables, both West and North will open sometimes, and East might even open in fourth seat, hoping to play in a major suit contract at the one level. North looks to be the most likely to open, with a near opening hand, a five card major, and at favorable vulnerability. Some East players might overcall 2, although the hand is pretty minimal for that. If East does bid 2, I expect South to still bid 2 and West to make a Negative Double . E/W will get to s though they might play 3 as West is likely to raise even with the poor holding in s. If East doesn't overcall initially, they might still get to 2 as East can double if 2 gets passed back around to him. East will be worried that West will bid s, but should trust that West will know that the East hand is flawed as East didn't double 1 the first time. West should strive to bid 2NT with some support for both minors, realizing that East likely only has one minor. On a bad day, West will be 3253 an choose to bid 3, so East's double certainly isn't without a little risk. Perhaps overcalling 2 in the first place is best after all, though for the second hand in a row, it isn't a great choice, a vulnerable two level overcalls should be much better than this.

To get a good score, E/W will need to get into the bidding somehow. 2 will be down one or two tricks, but with all of the finesses working, and with all of the suits breaking such that declarer will be overruffing the opponents, s will play very well and will make at least nine, and sometimes ten tricks.

Although 6 is an excellent conract, and in fact 6NT declarer by North is even better, it will not be easy for N/S to get there. The key to the hand is likely to be North choosing to raise s on their singleton honor at some point. South might pass 4, but could also make one slam try. If South cue bids 5, an important agreement will help. The general idea is that you never cue bid shortness in a suit your partner has shown length. Thus, North will know that the 5 cue bid shows the Ace, and will recognize that with s as a source of tricks, and all of the other honors in the North hand working, that slam is likely to be a good prospect and can just bid 6. Can North work out that NT is likely to play as well? Perhaps they should, but it will be somewhat speculative, having little idea of South's overall hand. In any case, getting to either slam will be a great score for N/S, as I expect most of the field to be playing either 3NT or 4. With s breaking 4-2, declarer should make 12 tricks without much problem. If West leads a against 4, declarer should go up with the Ace, play the Queen and a to the Ace, then pull trump and run the suit, conceding one trick at the end. If East leads a against any NT contract, declarer can put in the Queen and end up making all 13 tricks.
