Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

The aggressive bidders will be rewarded, provided they have their guessing shoes on! East deals and opens 1. Of course, there will be some who open 2 NT, either playing 19-21 or by upgrading the 19 point hand. Over a 1 opening, West will respond 1. East will probably rebid 2 NT. West may check back or invite with 4 NT. Some will sign off in 3 NT. There are a maximum of 32 hcp E-W, but slam is not out of the question. With good guesses in hearts and diamonds, 6 can be made. But who want to be in 6 when 6, 6 and 6 NT all make if declarer finds the J? Playing in 6 NT and making will be the top score but 6 is the safer of the slams because the heart mis-guess will only result in -1.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

Without N-S interfering in the auction, E-W might have a fairly easy time getting to slam. However, both North and South have possible bids. North deals. Some will open 2, although I would be inclined to pass at this vulnerability. Over a 2 opening, East will most likely overcall 2 NT. South should pass but someone might interject a 3 bid. Over that, West might just bid 5, which should end the auction. If North passes in first seat, East opens 1. Now, South will bid either 2 or 3 and West faces the same problem. If he simply bids 4, East could conceivably bid 4. This should propel them to slam. Playing 6 should be near the top in scoring. If anyone climbs to 6 NT, it can be made with good card reading. Even with the K lead, East can win, run the clubs and squeeze the North hand down to 3 spades and the A. Since East will be pitching after North, he will be able to keep the A, K and the Q, J. Anyone who bids and makes 6 NT will have a top board along with a lot of admiration.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

Many should reach the slam in spades, with different sequences. If south opens 2, too good in my opinion, North can inquire about strength, suit quality or a Feature . No matter what the approach, if North bids key card, he will find them only off one key card and bid the slam. If North gets to open in 4th seat 1, over a 1 response, he will bid 4, Splinter . South must now take an aggressive stand and force to slam. Either way, those who miss the slam will have a below average result.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

Although 6 NT and 6 can be made, they both require dropping the Q x offside. Neither contract is likely to be bid. However, 6 should be a popular contract and is the safest of the three slams. It basically just requires the A to be onside. The auction should start with 1. North, not vulnerable vs vulnerable, will probably bid Michaels Cue Bid (2). East should double. South may pass or bid 2 NT. Over either, West needs to introduce his diamond suit at this point. After that, it should be fairly easy for east to drive to slam. If West passes South’s bid, it may be hard to convince his partner that he has a good 5 card diamond suit. Plus 1370 for E-W should be a pretty good score.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

Another potential slam which is very unlikely to be bid. East deals and opens 1. South passes and West will respond 1. Some aggressive Norths might overcall 2 but most will pass. East now will Splinter with 3. West will signoff in 4. If North has overcalled in diamonds, this will make East’s hand even more appealing because he can assume the diamond finesse will be working. Some Easts may push on with 4 NT. Finding one keycard, they will bid 6. Those slam bidders (in 6) will receive the top score.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

This should be an easier grand slam to bid than the previous small slam. South deals and passes. West opens 1. North will probably pass though some might chance 1. Over pass, East’s most productive bid will be Jacoby 2 NT. Subsequently, with a series of cue bids and key card, East can find out West has the Q, A, A and shortness in clubs. This should make a 7 call fairly easy to make. Plus 1510 should be above average but several pairs should be there.
