  1. Semi-forcing

E/W should play 4 from the East hand at most tables. Once upon a time, there would be no question that the West hand would be a Game Force opposite an opening bid from their partner. However, if you have taken a more modern approach and open all 12 HCP hands, and many 11 HCP hands, then it is important to also adjust down a little bit what hands are a Game Force after an opening bid. With a 4333 hand, the West hand could certainly qualify as just an invitational bid, despite holding quality honor cards. The main lesson on this hand is that you should take into account your opening bid style when deciding how to evaluate hands such as the West hand. Whether West bids 2 to force game, or shows a three card invitational raise, East has the values to bid game. Most of the matchpoints will rest on South's lead. If South leads a , declarer will have no losers in that suit, and with both honors onside, will find themselves wrapping up all 13 tricks!!! On any other lead, declarer should only end up with 12 tricks, unless South falls asleep and fails to play a honor if declarer starts the suit from their hand. It turns out that declarer can make all 13 tricks in a contract on any lead, but E/W do not belong in s, as they don't have the values to even consider slam.

After West opens 1, North will usually overcall 1 and East can make a Negative Double . Some South players might raise to 2, although the hand is minimal, particularly at this vulnerability. If South passes, West should bid 3 and not just 2. At first, this might seem an overbid, as West does not have the normal values for a jump shift. However, when partner makes a Negative Double, particularly over a 1 bid from the opponents, you should make a jump rebid with a little less, as partner has already promised some values. A hand worth about 15-17 HCP is appropriate for a jump. Conversely, with a better hand than that, it isn't sufficient to make a jump shift, and you should cue bid the opponents suit to establish a Game Force . East has 9 HCP, which is close to a minimum for their Negative Double, so passing 3 would not be unreasonable. As already mentioned, a jump shift opposite a Negative Double does not show a game forcing hand, and in fact isn't forcing at all. If East does decide to bid again, 3 is out as that would be a non-forcing correction back to West's first suit. 3 is a less certain bid, as some would use that to show that the original Negative Double was based on a weakish hand with only s. So, that just leaves a 3 bid, and then a pass of West's 3NT bid.

As it happens, with the poor breaks in the minor suits, 3 might be a harder contract than 3NT. Against 3NT, North is unlikely to lead a , which would give declarer no chance to make. By the way, if you were to lead a from the North hand do you know which to lead? Against a NT contract, if you choose to lead from a three card holding containing two unconnected honors, it is usually right to lead the second (lower) of the two honors, in this case the Jack. Assume instead that North leads a high . Declarer can win the Ace and lead a high , getting the bad news in that suit. South can make things difficult by ducking the King twice, but if they take either of the first two finesses, declarer will be in control. Declarer can duck two rounds of s if South switches to that suit, and eventually lead a toward the Jack for their ninth trick. Ducking twice in the suit makes it much more difficult for declarer to keep their lines of communication open, but declarer might still prevail, depending on what they choose to do next. Anyone who makes 3NT will certainly get a very good score.

  1. Game forcing, saying nothing about s

I admit with a rebiddable six card suit, and sufficient defense, I would open the South hand without thinking too much about it, but some will certainly pass. Assuming South does open, it looks like N/S are headed to 3NT, most often declared by North. East will have no obvious lead against 3NT, and might choose any suit except a . If East leads a , declarer can win, play a towards North. West should play the King. If West play the Jack, declarer will be sure they have three tricks in the suit, but playing the King makes it unclear where the Jack is. Declarer might choose to duck the King, or win and play a . Communication between the two hands is tricky, but on the layout of the cards, declarer has several paths to nine tricks. They might end up taking four tricks, two tricks and three top minor suit tricks, or the defense might set up a long for declarer, or declarer might take the finesse at some point. All roads seem to lead to nine tricks and anyone who makes 10 tricks should have a well above average result. The nice layout in s insures that a contract will also play very well, though I don't think many will be playing s. If South doesn't open originally, 3NT still seems the most likely final contract, but it's possible that N/S will stop in a partscore in light of their misfit. This will not be a good result for N/S with all of their games making.

  1. Limit raise or better in s

E/W should have no problem getting to 3NT on this hand. Regular readers of my analysis may recall that I recently suggested opening 1NT with a hand with 18 HCP and 4333 distribution (see Board 4 from 12/6/2017). Given that, it might seem odd that I don't also recommend that here. The principle difference is that the current West hand is full of Ace and Kings, and both of the queen/jack honor cards are paired with an Ace. The hand looks significantly better to me than the hand from 12/6. Indeed, if I go to http://www.jeff-goldsmith.org/cgi-bin/knr.cgi and put in the current hand, to get a more accurate evaluation of its' value, I get a value of 17.65. The "similar" 4333 18 HCP from 12/6 gave a value of 1.5 HCP less than this. The point to learn here is that even with the same distribution and same HCP, not all hands are created equal. Part of learning to be a better bridge player is learning better hand evaluation beyond just HCP and distribution. The most important facets of more advanced hand evaluation is understanding that Aces and Kings are a little better than their HCP indicates, and Queens and Jacks are a little worse, and also understanding the importance of honor "structure" (i.e. where honors are located relative to long suits and relative to each other.) A hand with A32 and Q32 in two suits is less valuable than a hand with AQ2 and 432 in those same suits. A hand with 65432 and AQ in two suits, is less valuable than a hand with AQ432 and 32 in those same two suits.

There won't be much to the play of this hand. If North is on lead and leads a , declarer can play the Queen and eventually play on the suit, ending up with 12 tricks. If East is declarer and South leads the Jack, declarer will certainly not end up with 12 tricks, and will do well to end up with even 11 tricks. Of course, North might pitch a on the run of the s which will help declarer out a lot. Top scores for E/W will go to those who get a from the North hand and then North pitches a on the run of the s, allowing declarer to make all 13 tricks.
