Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

The hyper-aggressive bidders and no trump “hogs” will be richly rewarded if they bid any grand slam, but they are unlikely to do so. North deals and passes and East will open 1. Some Souths might bid 2 but that is not my style, especially at equal vulnerability. If South passes and West bids 2 (game forcing), East will presumably bid 3. West should bid 3 so that he will later be able to bid key card and find out about the Q. When that card is lacking, West cannot bid a grand slam with any assurance. So...what does he do? Since it’s matchpoints, he might take a shot at 6 or 6 NT. It looks safer to bid 6 from the West hand but, after all, you are playing match points. 6 NT bidders will probably achieve the top score. This hand would be a little more interesting if West were the dealer. Some would open 1 others 2 and a few might venture 2 NT! Anything would work.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

The question on this hand will be whether or not N-S can get to the top scoring contract of 6. East deals and passes. South could open 1 or an off-shape 1 NT. I would guess 1 NT is more likely to get the job done. I would think North would transfer and eventually bid key card. He will find out they are off an ace and better sign off in 6. Unlike Board 1, the no trump “hogs” should be punished on this one. With West on lead, he should lay down his ace. A plus score for E-W will be huge!

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

This is a very fortunate hand for E-W if they bid a grand slam in either hearts or diamonds. With hearts 2-2, there is nothing to the play unless declarer decides North has QJ x of hearts!! Getting to slam may be a little difficult with interference from North. South deals and passes. Some Wests will open 1, others will pass. The openers are very likely to get to slam, the passers unlikely. If North guts up and opens 3, the best Eeast can do is double. If South raises, it is highly unlikely slam will be reached. If West can bid 4 NT, showing 2 places to play, East will bid 5. When West now bids 5, East can correct to 5s. One or the other “might” get them to 6 but it is much more likely if West opens the bidding. With only 12 tricks in NT, the heart bidders will score well, especially in slam. If a grand slam is bid, N-S may salvage a match point or two by sacrificing in 7. This is down 2000 with the right defense.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

The trick here is to get to 4. This may prove difficult as the combined high cards don’t justify a game. Without interference, the auction is likely to start P - 1NT - P - 2, P - 2 - P - 2S. For those playing some form of trash Stayman, this will likely be the final contract. While I am probably in the minority, I play this sequence as 5-4 in the majors and mildly invitational. Therefore, East would probably get us to game because he has such good cards in the majors. The hands fit perfectly also. The + 620’s East-West should share the top score.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

South deals and passes. West will either pass or open 3. If he opens 3, North will pass and East should bid 3. South may stick in a nuisance double or even bid 4. This is not recommended, especially vulnerable. West is probably good enough to raise to 4, which is the top spot. If he, instead, bids 4, it will behoove East to pass. 5 is at least down one and that is with a good guess in hearts. The trouble that may happen in playing 4 is if South leads a diamond, later wins the A and shifts to a low heart. Usually in these situations, declarer may play for split aces, especially if South has not bid. Those declarers who bid and make 4 will deservedly get a great score.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

It may be possible for some pairs to bid 7. East will need to find out his partner has the K, K and K, as well as the A. However, making 7 will prove difficult. It’s hard even seeing all four hands but, otherwise, it probably will not happen. North should not split his spades on the second round of the suit. Now, unless East has seen in his opponent’s hand, he will go down. If, South leads the K, East should win the ace and ruff a diamond. Now, if he plays a spade to the king and another spade, if north splits, he can eventually pull off a trump coup and take all 13 tricks! The pairs who bid no trump will get a horrible score with a diamond lead. Those E-W pairs who are +1430 should get a great board!
