Lynn Berg typically provides analysis for 299ers on boards 1-18. Additionally, analysis for more advanced players is available for boards 1, 3, 6, and 8.

The Bidding: The ACBL allows East to open 1NT with a singleton Queen. East's club length and strength may give East too much strength to open 1NT. Opening 1NT guarantees finding a 5-3 major suit fit if available. Opening 1NT risks missing a club game or slam. The risk of playing in diamonds opposite a Garbage Stayman response can be circumvented by breaking the rules and rebidding 3. The big risk of opening 1 is East doesn't have a reasonable rebid if West responds 1 or 1. East is too strong to raise to 2 and doesn't want to jump raise with 3-card support. East could force with a reverse to 2, but that is risky with a singleton. East could Game Force with a jump shift to 2, but that may get the partnership too high or into the wrong strain. Jumping to 3 could easily miss a major suit game. Jumping to 2NT to advertise an 18-19 HCP balanced hand is probably East's best option after opening 1. However, the singleton Queen is a flaw and you're a level higher. Opening 1NT seems the least of the evils.

West uses a Jacoby Transfer to show 5+ hearts. Typically, a Super Accept shows 4+ card support. Here, East's 19+ Support Points and source of tricks justifies a super accept. Even if East doesn't super accept, East will rebid 3 to show 6+ hearts and game interest. All paths lead to 4 after East opens 1.

At tables where East opens 1 and doesn't reverse or jump shift, West must guess whether or not to risk rebidding their heart suit. A wrong guess leaves East-West in a club partscore.

The Play: Double Finessing offers a 75% chance of avoiding a second heart loser. North-South must cash their winners to hold declarer to 10 tricks.

  1. 1 or 4 key cards

The Bidding: West's hand meets the Rule of 20 for a 1st or 2nd seat opener, but fails the Suggestion of 22 . All of West's honors are working in support of length. West is too strong to open a Weak Two Hearts . So West opens 1. If an Equal Level Conversion Double is available, North may double intending to convert a 2 advance to diamonds. Most will pass. East's 2 response is a Two Over One Game Force . If playing the Bergen 2/1 Style , West rebids 3 to show 5+ hearts and 4+ clubs. If playing the Lawrence style, West lacks the strength to show a new suit at the 3-level. So West uses the catch-all 2 rebid which doesn't promise extra length.

Either way East bids 3 to show 3-card heart support. West has just 9 HCP, but their Losing Trick Count of 6 is better than many opening hands. Shortness in responder's suit is typically less valuable than shortness in a side suit. West communicates their unwillingness to cooperate with a slam try by bidding 4.

East, with 20 Support Points and a Losing Trick Count of 5, expects a slam to be available. East bids 4NT Roman Keycard for hearts and learns they have all the key cards. East is planning to bid the slam whether or not East has the Queen. East could ask for the Queen, but that risks giving the defenders additional information about West's hand. There is little chance of a grand opposite a partner unwilling to cooperate with a slam try. Bidding 6 seems best.

The Play: North leads their King, top of an honor sequence. Without a trump lead, declarer can ruff 3 clubs. When the King falls on the second round, declarer needs only 1 club ruff. Declarer draws trump and claims, conceding a spade. A declarer who can see through the backs of the cards would finesse against North for the King and take all the tricks.

  Pass1
Pass1Pass2NT
Pass3NTAll pass

The Bidding: As Larry Cohen discusses in his "Should I Open 1NT w/ a 5-card Major?" article, it is common to open 1NT with a 5-card major to avoid a rebid problem. Here, South has too much playing strength to open 1NT. So South opens 1. West lacks the strength for a 2 overcall. North responds 1. East has nothing to say. South's jump to 2NT advertises a balanced 18-19 HCP hand. North places the contract at 3NT.

The Play: West's standard lead is the 5. Declarer uses the Rule of 11 to place West with the diamonds above the 5. So declarer lets the lead ride to their 8. When East shows out, declarer takes the marked finesse against West's King. East must hang on to their hearts to hold declarer to 12 tricks. A spade lead and unblock would hold declarer to 9 tricks.

  1. 4 hearts, could be 5+ if East lacks the strength to bid 2

The Bidding: West's hand meets the Rule of 20 for a 1st or 2nd seat opener, but fails the Suggestion of 22 with just 1 quick trick. West's Queen-Jack combinations working in support of their long suits merit an upgrade. North-South likely have a major suit fit. West prefers to show their suits at a low level and opens 1. North overcalls 1. East has a choice between a Negative Double to show their 4-card heart suit and a 1NT overcall to show their stoppers. East's decision depends on whether West is willing to rebid 1NT without a stopper over a Negative Double . This is a controversial topic. Many experts are willing to show a balanced minimum with a 1NT rebid without a stopper. A stopper isn't a big issue for a 1-level contract. There is room to check for a stopper if game is a possibility. Other experts avoid rebidding 1NT without a stopper. This can make rebids awkward with a hand like xxx Axx Axx Axxx. As Andrew Gumperz discusses in his "The Race to 1NT" article, non-vulnerable 1NT contracts tend to score very well. East shouldn't be eager to bypass a potentially lucrative contract. If West will not rebid 1NT without a stopper, East should respond 1NT now. If West is willing to rebid 1NT without a stopper, East can make a Negative Double and get hearts into play.

Either way, West rebids 2. North competes to 2. This isn't a fit auction. So West isn't obligated to compete to 3. Passing 2 is reasonable. If West competes to the 3-level, North is likely to take the push. Now East must decide whether to penalize North. A doubled 1 trick set would score +100. There will not be a big matchpoint difference between +50 and +100. A 2 trick set is needed for a double to swing a lot of Matchpoints . On the other hand, 3 doubled making will be a bottom. The risk of doubling outweighs the reward. Passing seems best.

The Play: Declarer has no losers in the minors. Declarer cannot avoid losing 2 hearts. Declarer's spade texture limits spade losers to 2 tricks. Declarer has no trouble taking 9 tricks.
