I hope everyone had GREAT holidays. The new year WOW 2018 starts with a pretty simple auction and even easier play. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East opens the auction 1 and West responds 1. N/S are silent throughout. East has a number of options: 3 would be invitational, 4 would be game values and 4 is a Splinter game forcing raise with 4-spades and shortness in clubs. With 20 support points and 5-losers I think East is too strong to make an invitational bid, so 3 is out. With 4 East can show a fit and values for game, but 4 shows the same fit and values plus show a shortness in clubs. Some with West's hand might be tempted to cuebid 4 but the J is worthless - partner has already shown a shortness in clubs. As a serendipity the 4 Splinter keeps West from pushing to higher values.

This deal is a rabbit hole.* With all the bids that might be made it has so many offshoots a path will really be hard to predict ... but lets try. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

* A rabbit hole, in a metaphorical sense, is a long and winding exploratory path with many connections and offshoots.

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1. Not everybody will overcall 2 with West's hand, but those don't play in my club. After West overcalls 2, North has many options from bidding 2 (weak), bidding 3 (strong) or with 12 support points 3 (stronger) or even 4 (strongest). To keep it interesting lets have North make a Double. East now will surely bid 3 (heck some might bid 4). So over 3 South passes to give North a chance to double 3 if that was his intended purpose, but North just cant let 3x go by so bids 4. Now (yes now) North bids what he should have bid all along and supports spades but with 4 and South confused bids 5. And because they are going to be better, kinder and gentler bridge players in 2018 neither North nor South double.

Ok, if you don't like my fairy tale, how did it go at your table.

Here is another rabbit hole deal (see Bd 3) or at least a potential rabbit hole. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: With 13 high card points and a rebiddable spade suit, everyone should agree East will open 1. With 12 hcp and a rebiddable club suit everyone should agree South will over call 2. Now everything gets interesting. If West passes giving North/South room to bid, surely North will take action maybe cuebidding 2 and the auction will go something like South rebidding 3 or maybe 3 in which case N/S should reach 4 or 5 (but hopefully not 6).

Back to West, West must know looking at 1 hcp this is N/S deal and with a known 10-card fit in spades (the master suit) West just must take some preemptive action. West could bid 3 but that still leaves room for N/S to make last train bids. In the auction here West boldly goes to 4 in pace without flinching at the table. Most pairs will play over 4 4NT is for takeout and double of 4 is for penalty. If North bids 4NT N/S will get to 5 or 5 but probably not 5NT.

  1. forcing cuebid
  2. linchpin bid
  3. support in clubs
  4. (simple) Blackwood
  5. 1 ace

This deal might not be a true rabbit hole (see Bd 3) but if East/West find their 10-card spade fit early enough it could get interesting. I think 6 or 6 are going to be hard for N/S to bid without some help from E/W. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North deals and with 18 high card points and just 5 losers opens the bidding 1 with the intention, depending on the auction, of making a strong rebid. South with 7 hcp and 5 hearts dutifully responds 1. For now lets assume E/W are silent throughout. Left to their on devices the only forcing bid North would have over 1 would be a Jump Shift to 3 (functional but not the prettiest of bids) and South would rebid 3 not being strong enough to do much else other than maybe 3 and North would bid 4.

Now look at the auction here. Same 1 - 1 but with the overcall of 1 by West North is given the additional option of making a forcing cuebid of 2 which East doubles (or raises spades). Now the linchpin bid of this deal if South passes 2x (or 3), allowing North to define his hand, North will be able to rebid 3 and in the auction here N/S find 6. If however, East instead of passing 2x South rebids hearts 3 then North could go straight to Blackwood and the partnership should get to 6.

Some will be saying 'come on man' how can they get to slam on combined 25 hcp, but North with a singleton spade knows this is not a 40 point deck but a 34 point deck as the KQJ are a worthless 6 hcp.

  1. game forcing

Ok, one more potential rabbit hole, then no more. The rabbit hole theory is this: when you come to a fork in the path (a bidding decision) if you take the left fork it leads you to other paths different from the right fork and once you have taken a fork you can't go back. Continuing the analogy the rabbit hole is full of paths, connections and offshoots which lead to different results. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: The first decision in this deal is does either North or East open the bidding. In the auction here North has 11 high card points (7 of which are quacks ) with 8 losers , North passes. East on the other hand has 11 hcp (made up mostly of aces and kings) and 7 losers, East open 1. The second decision is after East opens 1 what does West respond. Almost any forcing bid West makes will be a misrepresentation, West chooses to bid 2 with only 4 diamonds. East might normally rebid clubs but with minimal values chooses to rebid 2. West with a balanced hand bids 4.

But let me point out if East does not open the bidding there is not way to get to game on this deal.

Play: The play of this deal is pretty easy using clubs to get the board declarer East drops the J and then finesses for the Q making 5. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

I minor suit slams. So many times these deals just get played in 3NT. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South with 11 high card pointsQuick Tricks and 6 losers opens the bidding 1, South has an easy rebid of 2 to define this hand. South MUST get into the auction - Precision players will open this hand, Losing Trick Count players will open this hand and players who count both hcp and QT will open this hand ... you cannot just be left sitting in the starting blocks.

In response to 1 North bids 1 and South rebids 2. North's bid of 2 is forcing a version of New Minor Forcing . South with 4 hearts responds 2 and North rebids 2 (saying thanks for telling me you have 4 hears, but I was really asking about spades). With nothing else to say South rebids 3 and North bids 4 as Minorwood. You can insert your own version of Blackwood here either 4 or 4NT. Again North knows this is not a 40 point deck (see Bd 9) and is not scared of only 28 hcp combined.

Play: The play of this deal like most slams is easy, only losing to the K on a finesse. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com
