Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

I doubt many, if any, pairs will get to slam. With a mere 21 hcp’s, a few may not get to game unless pushed. South deals and passes. If a vulnerable west opens 3, game should be reached. North will likely overcall 3 though some might double. If East passes, South could bid 4 over 3. North offers up 4 and South should continue with 4. Then, the slam might be reached if South can show a club void. If East interjects a 4 bid, I don’t see where or how slam could be bid. With spades 2-2 and the K and J onside, there are 13 tricks for the taking. Slam bidders should share the top score.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

There are three making grand slams on this board: 7 NT, 7 and 7. It is very doubtful that anyone would bid 7 in the 5-2 it. Of the grand slams, 7 should be the most frequently bid. When North shows at least 9 cards in spades and hearts (via 1 - P - 2 - P, 2), South should take over. With careful bidding, he can find out about the A, the Q and both minor suit kings. Therefore, 7 should have some play. In spite of the 36 hcp’s, you can’t count thirteen tricks in no trump. However, if you bid 7 NT, you will find them!

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

Another slam but this one is for E-W. With a likely start of 1 - P - 2 - P, 2 (playing 2/1), even if East bids 4, West has enough to bid on. However, when he finds out he is off a key card and the Q, he might settle for 5. Note that there are 12 easy tricks in no trump so the pairs bidding 6 NT, if any, will score a top. No trump is much safer than spades because no spade guess is required. Slam should be infrequent on the score sheet in spite of the 34 high card points.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

South deals and probably opens 3. This seems fairly normal at this vulnerability. It will behoove West to simply overcall 3 NT. There are ten tricks available by ducking a diamond at some point: 4 hearts, 2 spades, 1 club and 3 diamonds. If, instead, West doubles, East will bid 4. With the 10 lead, East should take ten tricks. However, the no trump bidders will get the top score. If South leads a spade against 4, some E-W pairs will be +450 if they allow themselves to get end played in diamonds.

Bill Wisdom Hand Analysis

Whether or not N-S get to slam may well depend on South’s opening bid. If he decides to open 1, North can find out, via New Minor Forcing , that he has 3. I assume he will drive the hand to 6. If South passes, the task will become more difficult. North opens 1. South will probably bid Drury . It will be tough for North to envision two aces and a doubleton diamond. Those who open the South hand and get to slam should share the top score. The no trump bidders should only score + 460 for a poor match point result.

After two passes, North will likely open 1. Some adventuresome Norths may open 1 NT, but why?? If the bidding proceeds 1 - 1 - 3 -3, N-S will be lucky to get to game much less slam. Who wants to be in slam which requires dropping the singleton K offside and the heart finesse. If South makes a Negative Double over the 1 overcall, the likely contract will be 4. If E-W sacrifice in 4, South can lead his singleton club and collect +500. This should be at or near the top as bidding slam on these N-S cards and making it seems highly improbable!
