E/W should play 3NT on this hand, and most of the matchpoints will rest on the defense. In theory, declarer can always make nine tricks, but in practice, if South leads a , declarer might well go down, and on any other lead, overtricks are likely. The worst lead for the defense will be if South starts with the 10. This will immediately allow declarer to bring in the entire suit without losing any tricks. If declarer decides to next lead a towards the Queen, then the eventual tally will be 11 tricks. If South instead leads a , this will also not work well for the defense. North can win and switch to a , but declarer will have no problems winning three tricks, two tricks and four top tricks in the red suits, to go with an extra trick in either s or s. A major suit lead from South looks unlikely, and a lead will not be helpful to the defense anyway. So, overall it looks like +430 is likely to be a pretty average score for E/W, and anything better than that in either direction should score well.

N/S have a lot of ways to get too high on this hand. Both 4 and 3NT are possible final contracts, and most of the matchpoints will go to those who manage to stay in a partscore. West has a normal looking third seat opener at favorable vulnerability. If West decides to pass, North will open 1 and might well raise South's 1 bid to 4. After all, game has play opposite as little as the King. If North raises to only 3 in that scenario, South will quickly pass. In the more likely event that West opens 1, North isn't quite strong enough to double and then bid s if South bids s, but with such a good hand for s, might double anyway. With E/W at favorable vulnerability, it looks unlikely that 2 will get passed out, so that would be my choice. East has a normal 2 bid, but the South hand is a little more questionable. North should have a good hand with a six card suit to make a vulnerable two level overcall, so South should probably raise, despite the uncertain value of the King. If South passes, North will bid 2, and N/S might end up playing a partial, though game is still possible if South raises. Should South raise if North bids 2 over 2? Given that I've made a case for South raising 2, it seems like South should clearly raise if they choose to pass 2 and now North bids 2. However, the South hand has gotten worse, as North is now marked with shortness in both the suits where South has a King, and South has a very poor suit. If South's King were in s, then a raise would be clear. In any case, if South raises s originally, North might well look for 3NT, knowing that seven tricks are already in hand. Alternately, North might bid 3. As 3 is the last making contract for N/S, and South is unlikely to pass a 3 bid by North, it looks like the only way for N/S to go plus if South raises to 3 is for North to pass.

Can N/S make any of their game contracts? If South declares 3NT, West will lead a , and when East wins the Ace, they can make a nice move of switching to the Jack, "pinning" the 10. A good West player will play the 9, which unblocks the suit in the case where East started with J87x or Jxxxx, as on the actual hand, and doesn't give up an extra trick on any other layout. With both of these good defensive plays, the defense will end up with six tricks. If East doesn't switch to a and instead continues s, declarer can do no better than cash out their eight tricks. If East switches to a low , declarer will probably put up the King, trying to make their contract, but if they duck, and West wins the Queen and then cashes the Ace, declarer will find themselves with nine tricks and a top. In a contract, the defense should have no problems cashing their four tricks, but if North is declarer, hiding the suit, it's just possible that the defense will keep pounding away at s, and will never get their trick. This is unlikely, and just going plus with the N/S cards should be a decent score. Making game anywhere will be a near top.

  1. Transfer

South will open 1NT at most tables, and North is easily good enough to simply transfer to game in s. Most pairs use both Jacoby transfers and Texas transfers, to transfer into a major at either the two level or four level. However, many players don't know the difference between bidding 2 to transfer to 2 and then bidding 4 next, vs. just bidding 4 to transfer into 4. For those of you who have never considered that question, you might also wonder why most experts even play transfers at both levels. The difference, and it's an important one, is that transferring at the two level and then raising to game is showing a hand that is making a mild slam try. So, with a hand like North's that has no slam interest, the correct bid is to just transfer at the four level. An important aspect of this approach, is that if North had instead bid 2, then jumped to 4, South should not automatically pass. I have seen this many times at the table, where my opponents transfer at the two level, then jump to four of the major, and almost always, the 1NT quickly passes, without even considering another bid. (Of course, often their partner doesn't realize that they've made a slam try, but that's not the point.) Consider South's hand here. If the Ace were the Ace instead, then South would have a hand full of good controls, with good trump, and a ruffing value. With that nice a hand, if North had started with 2, then bid 4, South should not pass. None of this is relevant to the actual hand, as North has no slam interest.

West doesn't have an obvious lead against 4, and might just start with a trump, but it will not matter what West leads. As long as declarer takes the time to pitch their loser on a , if the defense leads s, then 11 tricks will be easy, losing only one and one . I expect the scoresheet to be heavily filled with +450 for N/S with some occasional +200 bids when North undervalues their hand by quite a bit. If you counted the North hand as only being worth 8 HCP, and therefore didn't bid game opposite a 1NT opening bid, then you should consider studying a little bit of hand evaluation, as the hand is worth much more than that.

1All pass

East has a truly awful 11 HCP hand, and the reality is that I would probably pass with it at this vulnerability. If East passes, South also has a pretty ugly hand, having 4333 distribution, no spot cards, and no four card major. So, the hand will be passed out at some tables. If East does open, they should quickly pass their partner's 1 bid, desiring to clue their partner in as quickly as possible as to how bad their hand is. If East passes, but South decides to open, N/S are likely to end up in 1NT. On the layout of the cards, N/S will do best when the hand passes out. NT contract will not play well for N/S, at least if the defense leads s. Declarers best play might be to win the and exit back with a , forcing the defense to attack the other suits. West should not run the entire suit if declarer does this, but can switch to a , and now declarer is in deep trouble. Alternatively, declarer might win the and start on the suit, but again, the defense will have at least six tricks in the red suits, and should have no trouble scoring at least one trick in the black suits. As a contract by E/W will make nine tricks, -100 will not actually be as poor a score as it first appears, for N/S. There will be +140 scores for E/W and some +200 scores as well, when declarer mishandles things in a 1NT contract. As a passout will be well above average for N/S, any E/W pair that allows declarer to make 1NT will have a bottom score.
