N/S interference will make it difficult for E/W to get to slam on this hand. North has a normal 2 opening, and in fact, some aggressive bidders might even open 3. East has an easy takeout double and South will need to decide what to do. Given the vulnerability, South will suspect that E/W quite possibly have a slam on the hand, perhaps even a grand if one of the opponents has a void. It seems unlikely that South can steal the hand with 4, but this might make it hard for the opponents to determine if they have a slam. Notice on the actual hand how much pressure a 4 bid puts on West. Other possible approaches by South might be to bid 3 followed by 4 if the opponents only bid 4, and passing 4 or 4, or bidding 5 right away. The latter approach might push the opponents into slam, and the former approach looks unlikely to work on this hand, as South is so weak. Most players won't be considering tactics like these anyway, and a jump to 4 is likely to be a common bid.

What should West do over 4? Most expert pairs will have an agreement on what 4NT by West would mean. For sure, I don't know any expert or pro pairs who would use it either naturally or as Blackwood. For most it would mean that West has two places to play. Playing IMPS, it isn't so bad to include hands with s and a minor, as you don't care if you play in a minor instead of s. At matchpoints, another possible meaning for 4NT is that West has either both minors, or a slam try in s. This is a rare agreement, but would probably be a good choice on this hand if available. If West does have a way to make a slam try, East should accept. There is a good principle at work here, that if your partner is making slam tries and you have good trump, then you should bid slam, since your partner will have everything else. For most pairs, though, West will just be forced to make a guess. West basically needs East to have AK and A, or an unlikely A, or possibly a void. Usually it is wrong to play partner for a specific three cards, but what else could East have for their takeout double? There are only 16 HCP missing outside of the suit, and East should have 14-15 at a minimum. If East has the King and a minimum, that would be unfortunate. I think odds favor East having the top two honors, the Ace and one other card on this auction, and 6 is a good shot by West. I certainly have sympathy for only bidding 5.

With the suit coming in, the finesse will not even be needed to make 12 tricks. N/S have a sacrifice in 6, but this will not be found at very many tables. The sacrifice would be too expensive if South had a third or North had a third . In any case, getting to 6 will be an excellent score for E/W.

  1. shortness, 3 card support
  2. No serious slam interest

E/W will have the opposite problem on this hand that they did on Board 1, and that is, staying out of slam. After East opens 1 and rebids 2, West can make a delayed Splinter bid of 3. Jump bids when your side is in a game forcing auction are rare, and should show a fairly specific hand. In this case, West is showing shortness, three card support and some slam interest. With four card support, West would have bid 2NT first. With no slam interest, West would just bid 3. As discussed recently in my analysis, most expert pairs will use 3NT when they have found a nine card or longer major suit fit to either confirm or deny slam interest (known respectively as Serious 3NT or Non-serious 3NT.) Here, East is not a minimum, so shouldn't just bid 4, but the Ace opposite shortness isn't a great holding, so the East hand isn't as good as it looks. Notice how much better the E/W hands are if the Ace were the Ace instead. Should East make one more slam try over 3NT? Perhaps, as East would not likely show slam interest by cue bidding if their hand were the KJ, K and A. However, even if West does bid 4 and East bids 4, both players are likely to sign off at that point. If West decides to go on to slam on this hand, it will not work out. Unless South leads a , declarer has no play for 12 tricks, and even on a lead, declarer isn't home as they have to worry about a 4-1 break. Making 11 tricks will be a very common result and I suspect that most pairs will stay out of slam, for an average score.

  1. Positive, game forcing
  2. Transfer to

For the third hand in a row, one of the pairs will have a slam decision to make. With 22 HCP and a good five card suit, North is too strong to open either 1 or 2NT. Methods vary after a 2 opening and South might show controls, HCP, bid their suit despite the suit quality, or just bid 2 as either a waiting bid or immediately showing positive hand. In most cases, North will bid 2NT next. When South then transfers into s, North has adequate support to say the least and should immediately confirm a fit and slam interest. Normally after a 2NT or stronger bid, a cue bid should show a concentration of values and not just a control, as the strong hand is expected to have a lot of controls. On this hand, bidding 4 from the North hand looks like an unnecessary bid, taking up a lot of room, and since it doesn't pinpoint a source of tricks, making the cheapest cue bid looks best. South is likely to make a slam try themselves, even if North doesn't on this hand. Certainly, once South cooperates in a slam try, North should press on. Opposite a South hand that passed originally, it is reasonable for North to just bid 6 once South shows slam interest. Could South have a hand where a grand is reasonable? As little as xxxxx xx Axxx Ax, but the problem is that North will not be able to find out that South has this, instead of xxxxx xxx Axx Ax. It is also hard to construct a South hand where South can bid a grand with confidence. Perhaps North should just keep cue bidding, hoping that South will use Blackwood. If South has xxxxx x AQxxx Ax then South can probably bid a grand if N/S are using "# of Kings".

As it happens, this discussion is moot as an Ace is missing. Jumping to 6 instead of hoping for an unlikely grand slam has one other HUGE advantage. North doesn't want to have South be the first one to bid s and end up as the declarer, given North's holding. (Note that North could avoid this problem by just bidding 3 over 3 and then later making a slam try.) The actual hand illustrates the importance of this, as a likely lead from West will doom a 6 contract by South, but 6 is unstoppable when bid by North. Although 6NT happens to make double dummy, it will rarely if ever be bid, and is most likely to go down unless the Ace is led. Bidding to 6 should be fairly common, but will still be above average for N/S.

  1. New minor forcing, checking back for majors, at least invitational

Despite the bidding shown, it will be difficult for E/W to find the optimal contract on this hand and many will be getting too high in NT. The first three bids look pretty normal, and East will have to decide what to do over 1NT. With an 11 HCP hand, East has a marginal game invitation, and for pairs who open all 11 HCP, East should not even consider game and should choose between passing 1NT and bidding 2. I think 2 is better than passing 1NT given the fitting card and the lack of an honor in s. If East decides to invite, starting with 2, some pairs will be able to bid 2 over 2 showing a minimal invite and a five card suit, but others will require a six card suit for this and will be forced to bid 2NT. This bidding sequence is shown in the bidding diagram, but all in all, given the modern trend on opening bids, it feels at matchpoints like East should just bid 2 over 1NT. Certainly a contract will play better than a NT contract. The defense will take six tricks in a NT contract, and getting even as high as 2NT will be too much for E/W. In s, the defense must lead four rounds of s to promote an extra trump trick or hold up the Ace for one round, and end up with four tricks. On any other defense, declarer can take advantage of the nice break and finish with 10 tricks and a very good score.
