  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. Stayman
  3. denies 4 hearts, shows 4 spades

This week starts off with rather inconspicuous auction. In the auction here after 1NT and 2 Stayman everyone should be able to find game in 4. But lets look at the make up of South's values. Counting points South holds 12 hcp and 15 support points for spades. But the K has questionable values as a singleton is it worth 3 points, something more like 5 points or something less like 2 points. If you could move the K into another suit like the K (just swap red kings) and have a singleton x then South's values of 15 support points (even without an ace) just might produce slam. But holding the K singleton South is right to settle for 4. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North deals and with a balanced 15 hcp opens the bidding 1NT. Assuming East/West pass throughout, South responds 2 as Stayman asking if North has a 4-card major, and North answers 2 denying 4 hearts and showing 4 spades. South with 12 hcp and an 8-card fit in spades bids 4.

Down 2 — NS −100

Play: While double dummy shows 4 is a makeable contract it is not a guaranteed contract. In the play here West makes a great opening lead of the 4 and declarer (North) will need to find a safe place to put the J. If declarer gets the clubs right, which many will not finessing for the Q, it is still a difficult contract with East is holding 4 spades J1065. If declarer gets the clubs wrong finessing for the Q, it is down 1 for sure as East holds the K sitting behind the AQ as well as the A and the four spades. In the play here it is possible for the 4 contract to go down more than 1. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

  1. preemptive

This deal shows the disruptive ability of the LAW of Total Tricks (Law of Total Tricks ). Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East deals and with 12 high card points and 3 Quick Tricks opens the bidding 1 (ha ha ha some players holding AKJ10 might open this hand 1 in tournament play but I doubt many will 1 in club play), South with and opening hand of his own 13 hcp overcalls 1, and West with 10 hcp and a super duper diamond suit KQ108xxx bids 2. North with 4 spades and a void in diamonds makes a LoTT bid of 3 (9 trumps). East is now in a difficult situation, East can:

1) bid 4 which will probably get East/West to 5, but not 6
2) Pass the partnership is in a forcing auction and West will have to decide what to do, or
3) East could make a Negative Double of 3 showing 4 hearts.

Each of these bids carry a risk .. in the auction here, East doubles 3. This option which keeps his partner in the bidding. West not knowing where this auction is going bids 3NT to how a spade stopper and East passes.

Play: Against 3NT, North will surely lead a spade, in which case declarer can take a lot of tricks. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

What's bridge without a little controversy. The agreement I play with my partners is that a 6 card suit with 11 high card points is too strong for a Weak Two-Bid and thus open at the 1-level. I would open 1 even without 2½ Quick Tricks , but with 2½ QT there is no question this deal should be opened 1. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and North with only 3 spades chooses to first respond 2 as a game forcing 2/1 bid. North know the bidding will most certainly return to spades, but with only 3 spades struggles with a forcing response. After South rebids 2 then North with only 14 hcp can easily bid 4 as fast arrival.

Play: The play of this deal is not hard. West cannot lead a trump and thus, any lead West makes is going to give something away. As long as declarer (South) takes a finesse against the Q all will be good and if West does not cover the 10 with the Q then declarer can actually make 5 putting the losing heart on the K.

  1. Michaels Cue Bid _cuebid">Michaels Cuebid

With North/South having a 9-card heart fit and Weast/West a 10 card spade fit this should be a nice spirited auction. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South deals and with 12 high card points and a good 6-card heart suit AKJ1083 opens the bidding 1. West makes a Michaels Cuebid of 2 showing 5/5 in spades and an undisclosed minor. North with 13 support points bids 4 and East (grrrrrrrrrr) bids 4. South having already defined his values passes and North with a singleton spade bids 5.

It is a shame that E/W competed in this deal, but from double dummy it is E/W that has the shaped and values to make 5. North is lucky that when he competed to 5 that E/W did not compete to 5.

All pass
  1. game forcing
  2. North is compelled to bid

It is improbable 7 or 7 can be bid but 6 should be bid on this deal. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: After 3 passes, South opens the bidding 1, North responds 1 and East competes 1. South bid of 2 is forcing the auction and after North rebids 3 and South 3 North must bid something i.e., North cannot pass. South continues to bid out his diamonds and the partnership reaches 6.
