  1. Natural, quantitative raise in NT
  2. Natural, four card suit

No, I don't think the bidding will really go like this, but up until North's 5 bid, it should be pretty standard, and there are several good bidding principles on display here. North has a normal 1NT opening, and South is right on the edge of being interested in slam opposite a maximum. Notice that if North had the J, 6 would be an excellent contract. South should start with 2, looking for a fit, as a thin slam will likely depend on finding a 4-4 trump fit. When North responds 2, denying a fit, South should likely give up, and just bid 3NT. If South does decide to be aggressive and look for slam, 3 would usually show a five card suit, so South will need to make a slam invitational bid in NT. The standard way to do this is to bid 4NT. Note that this is not Blackwood, neither the old fashioned version, nor asking for keycards in s. If you are not an expert player, you might be wondering how South is supposed to ask for keycards if they want to look for slam in s. Slam bidding after a 1NT opening is an important area of bidding, and most expert pairs will have discussed this. Specific agreements vary, but it is common to have artificial bids available after partner responds in a major over a Stayman 2 bid. The most common agreement is that bidding 3 of the other major confirms a fit with slam interest and shortness somewhere (with the 1NT able to ask about the shortness.) 4 and 4 are used to ask for keycards and to show a balanced slam try. Other agreements are possible, and you should discuss this with your regular partners.

As the bidding diagram shows, with any sort of slam agreements over 2, 4NT should just be a natural, invitational bid that can be passed. On this hand, with a minimum, North should just pass 4NT. However, if North had a slightly better hand or decided to bid on anyway, how should the proceed? Some players might think that a response should just show Aces, make sure that there aren't too missing, but experts usually prefer to try to find a minor suit fit, which will often play better than a NT contract. This is more common playing IMPS rather than matchpoints. Notice on the current hand that if North did have the Jack, that 6 would be an excellent contract, but that 6NT would require a non- lead to have any chance. The normal, expert way to bid over 4NT is to show a four card minor at the five level and a five card minor at the six level. Some will even have ways to show a six card minor. On the actual hand, I suspect most will just be playing 3NT or 4NT, and 11 tricks will be made at most tables.

Most N/S pairs should find the good 4 contract. The South hand is way too good to preempt and should open 1. Given the vulnerability, some West's might bid 2, but with a five card suit, no shortness, and only 8 working HCP, it would not be a great idea, despite the fact that West has a clear desire for a lead. On this particular hand, a 2 bid will make it a little harder for South to work out which major suit is best for his side, but unless South just jumps to 4 at some point, N/S should be ok. Assuming West passes, North will start with a game forcing 2 bid. Despite holding three card support, South should know that his hand is more powerful in a contract, and should rebid 2, planning to show support next. North will have slam interest, but with no control in either hand, N/S should stop in 4. The bidding on the hand will likely mark the lead. On a lead, declarer will make 11 tricks, but on a lead, the defense must be careful to lead a trump, assuming that declarer cashes two s pitching a and then leads a . If they don't lead trump, then declarer can ruff three minor suit losers and pitch one on the Ace to make 12 tricks and a top. On a lead, declarer can make all 13 tricks, but this seems an unlikely lead, so I expect +650 to be the most common score by far.

I admit, it is slightly tempting to open the West hand 1NT and if the and suits were switched, that would be my choice, not liking my rebid options if partner responds 1. On the actual hand, West will at least have an easy rebid over a 1 or 1 response. A 1NT response on the actual hand would still be a little problematic, though it would mean the opponents have at least a nine card fit, and rebidding on offshape 2 or 2 might not be too bad. As it happens, all roads lead to 3NT on this hand. If West does open 1NT East will bid to 3NT, and if West opens 1 and rebids 1, East will either invite or just bid game and either way, West will have no problems bidding game themselves. The biggest danger for E/W is that East declares 3NT and South leads a . If declarer errs and plays the Queen rather than the 9, then the defense can set up three tricks to go with their likely and tricks to set the contract. If West declares 3NT, then 10 or 11 tricks will be made, depending on whether North leads a or a , and what South does when in with the King. Any declarer who stars the suit with the Ace will make an extra trick and get a very good score indeed, even though this is not the percentage play in the suit. If declarer makes that play against you and you are South, you might hold your cards a little bit closer to your chest!! I expect +630 to be about average for E/W.

  1. Semi-forcing

I suspect that most N/S pairs will end up playing 4 on this hand, though a few will be in 1. With a four loser hand, North has the overall strength to open 2, but their hand isn't sell suited for it. The difficulty is that the suit isn't strong enough to play well without support and the hand has support for both red suits. If one of the red kings were in s instead, then the hand would look more like a 2 opening. Of course, the danger in opening 1 is that the hand might pass out when game is making, and indeed, that will happen at a few tables on this hand. However, notice that this requires both South and West to pass, and it looks to me like both of those are unlikely. South might make a light raise to 2, or for pairs who play that as showing a constructive raise, can start with 1NT planning to bid 2 next. Bidding 1NT is a little more dangerous when vulnerable, as it will not likely be a good spot for N/S if North has a balanced minimum and passes it. In any case, I think the South hand is just strong enough to bid, either 2 or 1NT. If South does pass, West is likely to reopen with a double, and will come to regret it, as North can redouble, South can show belated support, and North is likely to blast into game, even opposite an original pass by South. If South bids 2, North might look for slam, perhaps with a "self-splinter" of 4, but South will not cooperate in any slam tries. If South instead bids 1NT and North makes a game forcing jump shift, South can now bid 4. It is very unusually opposite a strong jump shift to jump to game, and should show a hand such as what South has here, a sub-minimum, with no good controls and no good honors in partner's two suits. 4 is not a certain contract looking at just the N/S hands, but with the Jack as a dummy entry and the Queen onside, all will be well. In fact, depending on the defense, declarer might end up with their tenth trick in s, s or s, as all three suits are favorable to declarer. +620 should be a normal score, though there will certainly be some +170 scores as well.
