  1. Fourth Suit Forcing
  2. promises club stopper

This week starts off with a nice modern bridge auction using the bidding agreement Fourth Suit Forcing (Fourth Suit Forcing ) to both force the auction to game (some might play 4SF only forces 1 round) and explore for stoppers for 3NT.

Bidding* East with 14 high card points and 7 losers opens the bidding 1 (North/South passing throughout), West with 14 hcp and 3 Quick Tricks (an opening hand) responds 1 and when East rebids 1 West makes a 4SF bid of 2. The bid of 2 is artificial saying nothing about clubs but creates a game forcing auction. An opening hand vs an opening hand is game forcing (Paul Thurston ). In response to 4SF there are defined responses, and East response of 2NT shows a stopper in clubs, the Fourth Suit . After 2NT it is easy for West to bid 3NT.

Play* The defense of this deal should not be tricky. It should not be difficult for South to find an opening lead of a club, the fourth suit, and the 2 here is from 3+ clubs. As long as South does not make an opening lead of a spade, I think North/South can hold the play to making 4. The opening lead of a spade may be the only legitimate way for declarer (East) to play spades for making 5.

  1. Splinter for hearts
  2. RKC Blackwood for hearts
  3. 2 keycards w/o Q

A really nice deal for East/West, lets see if E/W can realistically get to 6. Using modern hand evaluation methods East hand has 16 high card points , but only 4 losers . With a near self sustaining diamond suit AKQ873 (length counts in Losing Trick Count ) East's hand evaluates more like a Jump Shift hand with 18-19 hcp. Putting this in perspective an opening 2 bid hand would typically have 9 winners or only 3 losers.

Bidding* East with 16 hcp, a self sustaining diamond suit AKQ873 and just 4 losers opens the bidding 1, South makes a 1 overcall and West bids 2 showing 10+ hcp and 5+ hearts. East makes the linchpin bid of 4, a Splinter for hearts. This bid shows the size and shape of East hand. East does not have 5 spades or 5 hearts or would have opened 1M, East has exactly 4 hearts and zero or 1 club and thus some length in diamonds and thus a lot of support points for hearts. West bids 4NT Roman Keycard Blackwood and East responds 2 keycards without the Q. West knowing the partnership has a 10 card fit in hearts has no concerns for the missing Q and thus the partnership is missing only 1 keycard, bids 6.

Play* The play of this deal is not too difficult, finding the Q. If North does not lead a spade then declarer (West) can put his spades on East diamonds making 7.

  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. natural

Strong notrump players (typically have 15 hcp in the range such as 15-17 hcp) and weak notrump players (typically cap out at 14 hcp such as 12-14 hcp) don't see the opening bid of 1NT the same. Weak notrump bidders see an opening bid of 1NT as preemptive, but here is the case where the strong notrump is preemptive.

Bidding* South deals and with 16 hcp and a balanced hand opens 1NT. West, in the auction here, makes a 2 bid as natural such as in a modified DONT (Meckwell) and East is stymied. It is very hard for East to press the auction with 3, but with 14 support points (depending on partnership agreements), tolerance for hearts and shortness in clubs maybe East should.

4All pass
  1. Splinter

We have already seen with Board 2 the power of the Splinter where East/West get to slam. So here East/West get to a 22 high card points game.

Bidding* In the auction here, West deal and opens 1, East responds 1 and South with 12 hcp overcalls 2. West with 4 spades and minimum opening values raises 2, North passes and East makes a jump cuebid of 4 as a Splinter or game forcing raise for spades. West with no extra values just bids 4.

If in this auction North decides to bid 3 over 2 East would still bid 4. If the vulnerability were reversed where North/South had favorable vulnerability where N/S were not vulnerable against East/West vulnerable N/S would do well to compete to 5,

5All pass
  1. jump rebid
  2. control bid for spades

Not exactly a Splinter situation, but close.

Bidding* After two passes East opens the bidding 1 (North/South passing throughout) and West responds 1 (this keeps North out of the auction) and East makes a jump rebid of 3 which should show 15 points and good heart suit (some would say almost self sustaining). West bids 4 and East bids 4.

West is put under pressure, even if West considers East is showing first round control, it could be the A, does West have the values to put for slam? When East makes a jump rebid of 3 East has limited his hand and West only has 10 high card points , not enough to push for slam and settles for 5. If by chance West bids 5, East will most likely bid 5.
