North has a 4333 aceless hand with disconnected honors except in the spade suit. Is that enough to open the bidding? Not according the K&R hand evaluator program, the mathematical interpretation of Edgar Kaplan's theories of hand evaluation (http://www.jeff-goldsmith.org/cgi-bin/knr.cgi?hand=KQJx+kxx+j9x+qt9). That program gives a value of 10.50, well below opening bid values. I agree, and would pass. How then, is it that the hand makes 2, and yet the hand gets passed out?

For those who still think that the Rule of 20 has independent validity, they, too, would pass the North hand.

If you open the North hand, you will get a fine score -- on this deal.

Then there is the question whether to open the West hand in fourth seat. Pearson points (the Rule of 15) have some validity in that the spade suit in particular is elevated to a part of the decision making process. In fourth seat, open if your HCP plus spade length equals or exceeds 15, otherwise pass.

That rule works well here, and following it will lead West to pass and beat par.

East has enough to eke out an opening bid and West will bid 1NT rather than 2. East would do better today to bid 2, but cannot really know about the diamond fit, so is likely to pass.

There is enough strength to make 1NT in some comfort.

Just as super acceptance are based on sound theory after 1NT opening bids, when a 2NT opener is transferred into a great fit, it is well established that a jump to game or even a control bid might be appropriate. Join the party, North. Don't just sit there -- spread the good news.

East will be saddened to learn there are two key cards missing, but plus 650 should be very routine.

Very. Please ask how any other result could possibly occur. I cannot think of one.

Like, who would play notrump with ten spades??

West has shown so much strength (open, takeout double and four level bid) that East, with no spade wastage and likely working heart cards, should take a strong partner with long clubs into game.

East thought about bidding 2 over the double, but that might cause EW to miss diamonds. Well, yes, but it also would have shut hearts out some of the time. 2 preemptive had a lot going for it and might yet be the right bid.... But then, EW are vulnerable, so maybe over the random hand universe 1 would work out better on average. The hand might have been EW in spades on other layouts.

Which of the EW pair has anything extra to bid game? South is sure the hand belongs to his side, and bids with authority. But South is wrong, despite 21-19 HCP advantage to NS, the honors are so well placed for EW (K, A), that game can be made.

East is not likely to bid game with the QJ8 and xxxx.
West is not likely to bid with just 9 HCP.

North says, "So sue me," and merrily bids a theoretically unsound Blackwood after diamonds were agreed trump at the four level. Eddie Kantar says that the agreement (4) is NOT the "ask," (meaning 4 is not Minorwood, and if the partnership is not playing Kickback or Redwood, or some such, then 4NT is the fallback key card ask. 5 shows zero or three, and in keeping with modern theory, 5 forces another bid if the answer was "three," but can be passed if the answer was "zero."

Having "three," then it behooves the key card responder to show a side king, and North's slight theory violation has been covered.

6 should yield a fine score.
