This week starts off with a very sad deal ... if North/South stay out of the auction, there is no way East/West should stay out of game and there is no legitimate way for E/W to make game.

In the auction here E/W play two bidding agreements: Wolff Signoff and a second commonly called "major suit checkback" (similar to New Minor Forcing ) such that after the jump rebid of 2NT showing a strong balanced hand, 2NT does NOT deny 4 spades. Responder's use of 3 (Wolff) and 3 (checkback) after 2NT are artificial used to further define the auction.

Bidding* East opens the bidding 1, West responds 1 and East jumps to 2NT showing an 18-19 hcp balanced hand and based on partnership agreements does not deny 4 spades. In the auction here N/S are silent throughout, if N/S compete it maybe the best thing for E/W as it may keep them out of game. After the jump to 2NT responder's bid of 3 would start a signoff sequence (Wolff), and responder rebid of 3, as in the auction here, is artificial as a general checkback for majors . East bid of 3 shows 4 spades and West with 4 spades and 8 support points bids 4.

Play* In the play of this deal if everyone does what they should there is no legitimate way to make 4, here is E/W best play option. On opening lead South does not want to lead the singleton J as this will give away the holding of the heart suit and probably the fact that South holds length in spades (and South does not need to ruff), South leads the 6 4th best in clubs.

Declarer (East) recognizes from the outset with J53 in dummy and A872 in hand there is no winning play to lead diamonds, so declarer decides to play the hand out making the opponents break diamonds. In the play outlined here declarer refuses to break diamond and E/W pick up the theme not to break diamonds. On trick nine T9, refusing to lead away from the K, South leads the K giving declarer a ruff and the sluff of a diamond making the contract. If South just leads a diamond E/W cannot make 4.

  1. long suit game try

If Board 1 was a sad deal for East/West, then this is a sad deal for North/South. On this deal N/S could take 9 tricks for 3NT, but with 9 spades N/S will most likely play in 4 (hold this thought) which does not make.

Bidding* South with 6 spades opens the bidding 1 and North with 9 high card points balanced and 3 spades responds 2. South with 16 hcp and 5 losers (typical for the values), in the auction here, makes a natural (long suit) game try of 3. Others might make a different method game try like a Hardy Game Try of 2NT or short suit game try of 3, but with 9 hcp, North would most likely accept any game try from South. With a balanced hand and the Q, North should accept the game try from South by bidding 3NT, but most will just bid 4. If North does bids 3NT then South might, just might playing pairs, accept the 3NT and pass, but holding AKQJ86 many will correct to 4 anyway.

Play* There is just no way to play this hand and legitimately make 4. The AJ6 is sitting over the K and the AJ4 is sitting over the K. Unless E/W just give it away, 4 should be down 1.

Speaking of "sad deals" (maybe a theme for this week) here is another sad deal for North/South.

Bidding* South with 13 high card points , 2½ Quick Tricks and 5½ losers will most certainly open this deal 1. In the auction here, West (overcaller) with 12 hcp overcalls 2 and East (advancer) with 13 hcp bids 2 which is forcing one round F1 showing spades and if not game forcing shows tolerance for clubs. West bids 2NT, should be showing a balanced hand with heart stopper and not 3 spades. East bids 3 as a Western cuebid this time showing game forcing GF values and asking West if he has 2 stoppers in hearts or can hold up on hearts (just reassurance) and West bids 3NT. What is sad about this deal is double dummy , 4 will make on a 5-2 fit and 3NT should not make.

Play* To beat 3NT North has to find a lead of the 10, not an easy lead to find in this auction. With South having bid hearts it is more likely North will find the lead of the 10 than the 10. So the real question (going back to the auction) is when East bids 2 is South strong enough to bid 3? In my analysis, if South does bid 3 then the only option for game is for E/W to bid 4, but still a better score for E/W ... so double dummy, East must bid 3.

Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
Pass1Pass1
Pass2Pass3
Pass4All pass

Here is potentially another sad deal ... South has a 7 loser hand and not vulnerable, white vs. white South in opening seat would surely open this hand 3 and might open 4. Knowing partner has a full opening hand between say 13-17 high card points and 7 losers , I think with 7 losers himself South should have bid 4, but in the auction here North saves the bacon.

Bidding* North with 14 hcp and 5-hearts opens the bidding 1. South with 6 hcp and a really good 7-card spade suit KQ109743 responds 1. North rebids 2 ... lets stop and talk about North's hand, in the auction North's hand is only limited by the fact that North did not take any action to show an 18-19 hcp and North did not rebid hearts to show a minimum hand, and thus, North must have between something like 13 to 17 hcp which surely warrants a 7 loser hand. In the auction here South jumps to 3 and North with a singleton spade could easily pass, but with good honors in other suits bids 4.

Play* Not much to the play of this deal regardless of the lead declarer can either pitch a heart on the A and ruff out hearts or pitch a diamond on the A and lead up to the hearts in dummy, either way E/W are entitled to win the A and the AK.

Not many slam opportunities this week ... lets see if we can legitimately get to this slam.

Bidding* East with 17 hcp opens the bidding 1NT and West bids 2 Stayman. East responds 2 (no 4 card major) and West with 14 hcp, 5 controls and 6 losers bids 3 showing an interest in slam, otherwise, West would have just bid 3NT. East bids 3 as a control bid and showing an interest in slam with maximum values. West bids 4 as Gerber and, in the auction here, East responds 4 with 2 aces (others may have different response systems) and West bids 6NT.

Play* There is not much to the play of this contract, once the heart finesse works the only chance is for diamonds and hearts to split 4-3-3-3. hahaha "only chance". This is not a great slam in that there is no real source of tricks, and thus, requires two suits to break 4-3-3-3.
