Balancing 1NT after an opponent's major suit opening is an art form. Much has been written about the point count range that should be used: Most current players use 11-14 HCP or a close approximation.

As to distribution, 1NT should certainly be in the "balanced" family, 4333, 4432, 5332. It's hard to imagine a 5422 hand worthy of 1NT, but with some effort one could be constructed.

Be sure to visualize what is going on in the hand. If you have excessive length in the suit opened and shortness elsewhere, you should be wary of chasing your opponent into a better strain.

Shortness in the opponent's suit suggests doubling, but doubling also suggests bidding the other major. The art, or judgment, is deciding whether to balance 1NT without a stopper, but with a generally balanced hand. 1NT is often the winner, even lacking a full stopper! Edgar Kaplan suggested balancing 1NT with 8-12 HCP, with or without a stopper, but that seems light in HCP these days.

I'd balance 1NT with the East hand without worrying much about the lack of a full stopper. After all, if partner has as little as Qxx or Txxx, we actually stop hearts!

The other way to get to notrump is for East to balance with a double, risking a spade response, and having West bid 1NT.

nine tricks are available thanks to a double heart stop, 3-3 clubs, and a diamond suit that can be set up quickly.

Straightforward. South attempts to compete, west doubles negatively, East shows a balanced hand with minimal (for sure!) values, and West bids game.

Nine tricks are easy enough, after a Q lead. East will set up a couple of spade tricks, add two hearts and five clubs, and try to find a tenth. Not likely.

The defense may be difficult here. For one thing, what should North lead? A small spade (fourth best) seems rather awful in the light of day. A better idea is to test the waters with the K (asking attitude), and seeing the negative 3, trying to find a "safe" shift.

At this stage both a spade continuation and a heart shift seem out, so North should shift to a minor, diamonds, perhaps, on the notion that leading away from a jack is for some reason bad. Some days that is true, but today the club shift is the winner, for South has such good clubs.

Then declarer might lead a spade to set up the top trick in that suit, giving North some rope to provide more help.

Without a club lead or immediate shift, it seems that declarer has an easy path to nine tricks.

If West opens an offshape 1NT, the final contract is likely to be 2 on a transfer sequence. 1NT with 4225 pattern and concentrated black suits feels wrong and this hand justifies the negative feeling.

West cannot justify jumping to 2NT after the 1 response, nor raising 1NT to 2NT with such awful diamonds. Perhaps feeling unable to show values, West might very well bid 2 to complete the pattern. Then East will show secondary spade support with some red tricks and a ruffing value for spades. At least that is one way to get to the right strain. Let's assume West swallows pride and does not try for game, letting 2 be the final contract.

North will surely lead the A, but is it right to set up the heart suit by continuing? Suppose it goes AKJ, ruffed. Now the heart suit is up and West can duck a spade early or late (AKT) and take ten tricks when the trump suit splits 3-3.

Or declarer can try to cater to a bad trump split by conceding a trick: ruff the third heart, play A and ruff a club, then AK, then clubs from the top. Making just three, but scoring more tricks when trumps are 4-2, a more likely distribution.

?

When I started playing, a very good Jacksonville player by the name of Leon Smith often doubled 2NT in the balancing seat, almost regardless of his hand, and more often advocated than did that! So I call that the Leon double!

If West doubles after 2NT P P, the there is a bonanza to be had for EW, since even without the lead, EW can make 2NT! South just did not provide much help.

But those not attuned to the Leon double will let the bid fly and be satisfied with a plus score on defense, wondering how they could have known to double.

The answer might be to have known Leon.
