  1. weak jump overcall
  2. spade stopper & 10+ high card points

This week starts off with a not so exciting auction, but brings up a partnership issue on leading partner's bid suit. On opening lead, on this deal, North dutifully leads a spade, partner's bid suit. Marvin Shatz, one of my early mentors, taught me if you lead a different suit from partner's bid suit and it is wrong "it is your fault" and could lead to partnership strife. But NOT leading partner's suit, such as in this deal, could be the right play. This is why partnerships need to have an agreement on overcalled suit quality and an agreement on leading partner's bid suit.

Bidding* East with 12 hcp and 8 losers opens the bidding 1 and South makes a weak jump overcall of 2 (grrrrrr!). The 2 overcall is basically equivalent to an opening Weak Two-Bid of 2. West has basically two options: West could bid 3 which shows the fit in clubs and should show some values at the 3-level or West could bid 2NT, as in the auction here, showing the spade stoppers and 10+ hcp. East with minimal values passes.

Play* On opening lead North dutifully leads the 3, partner's bid suit. Declarer (West) can count spades so knows the 3 is the only spade North holds (placing the Q in South's hand), and thus, wins the A in dummy and leads on clubs. In notrump contracts timing is everything and declarer can now set up clubs for making 2. BTW, the lead of the 10 beats the contract.

  1. preemptive

Preemptive bidding basically falls into three strategies, the first discussed here is disciplined preemptive openings. The disciplined partnership believes that preempts must be precise - they should describe specific trump suits, openers shape, limited outside values and exact playing strength.¹ The disciplined preempt would contain a good 7-card suit with no more than 2 losers (assuming normal breaks), typically does not contain a side 4-card suit, a void or more than 10 high card points and not more than one outside A or K. (More on playing strength in a future deal.)

Bidding* In the auction here North, with an almost perfect disciplined preemptive opening, opens 3. The trump suit should contain no more than 2 losers, it would be better for North to have the 10 such as QJ109xxx but the broken sequence QJ98xxx is pretty close. East has 18 hcp, probably good enough to double first then bid spades (see May 8 Board 17) , but holding AKQxx East really wants spades as trump so overcalls 3. West with 4 spades, 9 hcp but the K sitting under the heart bidder has no interest in slam and just bids 4.

Play* With the opening lead of the K (natural lead) East/West can be held to making 4 with North getting a diamond ruff withe the J. But, as I have discussed many times (see Board 1) it is hard not to lead partner's bid suit. And thus, the opening lead of the 7 allows E/W to make six putting two diamonds on length in clubs.

Preemptive Bidding
The April 17, 2018 write up of Board 1 starts a thread on preemptive bidding. Continuing with this board, I will look for a preemptive deal each week and create a thread on preemptive bidding.

April 17, 2018 Board 1 - opening 4M
May 8, 2018 Board 17 - opening 4m
May 15, 2018 Board 4 - disciplined preemptive openings, opening 3M

Some might consider opening West's hand 1 and rebidding spades twice¹ but rebidding spades at any level other than 1 is going to look like a Reverse . Using Losing Trick Count with 15 high card points and just 4 losers reversing into spades would be ok except for the singleton Q which has unrealistic values. Put the values of the singleton Q in either long suit and it would be ok with opening 1 and reversing into spades with 15 working hcp and 4 losers.²

Bidding* In the auction here West open 1 and after the opponents compete to 3 West bids clubs at 4 (has to show a good hand and a long club suit). East with 4 spades corrects to 4 which get doubled.

Play* North makes a natural opening lead of the K (partner's bid suit) and West follows suit. North continues diamonds with South winning the A and West pitches the Q. South can continue one of the red suits but switches to a club (doesn't matter if the K or 10). With spades 2-2 declarer (West) can always get to the dummy with a safety play on spades with the 7 and take the club finesse and then ruff a third club, making 4.

¹ This bidding sequence has a special meaning in some systems.

I put this deal in to make a point ... bidding has rules. From two 5-card suits (majors or minors) bid the suits from the top. Bidding is not about bidding the prettiest suit, but about describing your hand and finding fits.

Bidding* West opens the bidding 1 (yes 1, not 1) and East responds 2. South certainly has one of the best hands at the table, but holding K1043 South is frozen out of the auction. West passes 2. North with only 7 high card points knows in this auction 1 - 2 all pass that South must have values (otherwise, where are the points), but for South to stay out of the auction, South must also have values in spades and therefore balancing , especially with unfavorable vulnerability of red vs. white, is dangerous. North passes also.

Pass4All pass
  1. 12-14 high card points balanced
  2. New Minor Forcing (NMF)
  3. 3 spades

double dummy analysis here says South can make 6, but about the only way I can see for South to be playing spades is if the partnership plays weak notrumps and South opens 1NT 12-14 hcp and North transfer to spades. But in such an auction, North with 15 hcp and a balanced hand will not be pushing to slam after a weak notrump opening.

Bidding* In the auction here, South opens 1 and North responds 1. After South rebids 1NT showing minimal values of 12-14 hcp and a balanced hand, North bids 2 as artificial New Minor Forcing asking South to further define his hand. (NMF is an asking bid not a telling bid.) In response to NMF South first shows a 4-card heart suit and when North asks specifically about spades with 2, South bids 3 (showing 3 spades) and now game of 4 is easy for North.

Play* Not much tricky on the play of this hand. If East ducks the first diamond finesse not covering the J it might cause problems, otherwise the play is pretty straight forward.
