At most tables South will have to decide whether to pass North's 1NT rebid or bid 2. Despite holding 20 HCP between them, E/W really don't have a chance to get into the bidding, with the points evenly split, and both hands being 4333. So, North will open 1, South will bid 1 and North will rebid 1NT. With an unbalanced hand, a suit that will play well opposite a doubleton, but doesn't look like it will run easily in NT and no help for North's suit, it looks to me like s will play better, and bidding 2 is superior to passing.

In practice, both contracts depend on the defense, though NT more than s. Against 2, West will lead a high . If West is worried about the suit being a source of tricks, they might decide to lead a and this will remove the guess for declarer and make it easy for declarer to lose only three top red tricks and the King. If instead the defense plays passively, with West continuing with two more rounds of s and East exiting safely in trump on winning the King, then declarer is likely to go wrong in s, as they can only handle a Q9xx in the East hand.

A NT contract will be a lot more complicated. East will not want to lead either of the opponents suits and might will start with a . Declarer can play the Jack, and whether West covers or not, continue with Ace and another . If East wins and passively continues s, declarer will end up with at least eight tricks. If East instead leads a , West can put declarer to the test by winning a high honor and then continuing with the Jack. Declarer will suspect that East doesn't have four s since they didn't lead the suit to start with, and may well duck the Jack, playing East to have started with Axx or Kxx. West can quickly cash out four tricks and then lead a , and declarer will find themselves with seven losers. Of course, if declarer instead plays the Queen, or West cashes a second high , then declarer will end up with nine tricks and a top.

An E/W contract is the most likely on this hand, and if N/S don't get into the bidding at all, this might just be a partial. At tables where N/S are bidding, the final contract will be much higher, and might be 4 doubled by N/S or 5 doubled by E/W. The East and South hands are an interesting study in suit quality, distribution and vulnerability. East has a pretty terrible suit, and poor distribution, but is at favorable vulnerability. South has a great , good distribution, but has only a five card suit, is at unfavorable vulnerability and in second seat, the worst seat for preempting. So, should either of them open their major at the two level? It might seem curious, but I would be more likely to open the South hand with 2 than the East hand with 2, mainly because of wanting a lead with the South hand, but the East suit being so bad. When your second highest card in a suit is the 6, it's a good time to reconsider preempting. As it happens, if East does bid 2, N/S might both end up passing, and West will put the contract in 4, or if they are very conservative, may just invite game and E/W will play 3.

If East passes and South opens 2, then West can double, holding a good hand, even if the distribution isn't perfect. North's goal over the double should be to try to get his side to 4 without the opponents bidding five of a red suit. Why is this the goal? The only time E/W playing at the five level is good for N/S is when both 4 and the E/W contract are going down. North should feel reasonably confident that they have three tricks on defense, but given the vulnerability, should expect that 4 is probably making. Thus, it is probably better tactically for North to show a strong hand, for example, by bidding 2NT, rather than jumping to 4. Of course, North cold also reason that if East doesn't have a long red suit, that a 4 might shut the opponents out. It looks like pretty close to a toss up to me as to which bid is more likely to work out for North. On the actual hand, East is likely to bid 5 over 4, and West is likely to bid 5 on the bidding shown if North takes the slow route to 4.

If both East and South pass, West will probably open 1NT and now it looks like a major suit partial in either direction is the most likely result. As it happens, 4 is cold to make, and 4 only goes down if the defense sets up a trick before letting declarer in AND win the first lead with the Ace to successfully cash out their black suit winners. So, both sides will need to be playing and making game in their major to end up with a top score on this hand.

N/S should reach 4 at most tables, and this will make 10 tricks most of the time. The defense will have to be a little bit careful against good declarers, however. Some West players will overcall 2 when South opens 1. However, two level overcalls are one of the few areas of bidding where experts are more conservative than average bidders. A two level overcall in a minor should almost always show either a six card suit or extra values. Particularly at unfavorable vulnerability, the West hand does not qualify. On the actual hand, West will probably get away with it, but notice that 2 will go down two, and if it is doubled, East is unlikely to be able to run to the better contract. In a contract, West will start with the Ace. If they cash out their three top tricks, or lead three rounds of s, then the defense should get their three tricks. However, notice what happens if West switches to a trump after cashing two s, perhaps trying to cut down declarer's ability to ruff s in dummy. This isn't a realistic defense, but it will happen at some tables, and now declarer has a chance to show some good play. Declarer can win the trump switch with the Ace, play the Ace and ruff a with the King, then play the 7 to the 10. When trump break 2-2, declarer can now ruff a with the Queen and lead the carefully preserved 3 over to the 4 to run the suit, ending up with a well deserved 11 tricks. The play will be similar if West switches to a . I expect most tables to be +420 to N/S so anyone who does manage 11 tricks will score a top.

  1. Asks partner to bid 2, possibly to play (Lebensohl)
  2. Too strong to play 2

With North opening at some tables, and South making a foolish overcall at other tables, this hand will have a lot of different final contracts. Even if N/S are silent throughout, it isn't clear where E/W will end up. One possibly bidding sequence that illustrates several good bidding concepts is shown in the bidding diagram. East starts with 1 and over West's 1 bid, rebids 2. This is a known as a "reverse" bid, wherein the opening bidder's second bid is a non-jump bid, but is at the two level in a suit higher than their original suit. The reverse bid shows 16+ HCP and is forcing for one round. Most experts play a convention known as "Lebensohl" over a reverse. Under the Lebensohl agreement, the cheapest bid between 2NT and the remaining unbid (fourth) suit is used as an artificial bid. It asks the opening bidder to make the cheapest available bid, which responder will either pass, correct to another suit bid to play there, or some other bid showing a specific hand. However, what many players just starting to use lebensohl don't realize, is that if the opener has extra values and wants to force game, they should bypass the suit responder has requested them to bid, making another natural bid. Any bid by the opener other than the cheapest available bid over the lebensohl bid is 100% game forcing.

The current hand illustrates this. After East's 2 reverse bid, West will be unsure whether 2 opposite likely shortness or 3 is the better contract, but with a weak hand, will be sure they don't want to play in game opposite a minimum. So, West bids 2 which doesn't show s, but instead asks East to bid 2 so that West can sign off. (If the red suits in both hands were reversed, East would have rebid 2, and now West would need to bid 2NT as the lebensohl bid, as this would be a cheaper rebid then the Fourth Suit , 3.) With 18 HCP the East hand is borderline on being a Game Force , but assuming East decides their hand is worth bidding game, they should not bid 2, as West has requested. Instead, East makes the best natural bid, which in this case is 2NT. Note that this bid strongly implies a singleton, as East didn't bid 2NT over 1. East won't really be happy with their options over 2NT, but as stated earlier, 2NT is 100% game forcing, so West will have to grimace and bid 3NT. As it happens, 3NT will make with careful play, as all of the N/S cards are sitting well. The exact play will depend on the defense, but as an example, let's say South leads a . Declarer can win and play the Queen and if this is ducked, a to the Jack. North might win and lead the 10, but declarer can win the Jack, cash all their s and high s, and then lead a fourth , and wait for the opponents to give up a trick or a trick. The play will be different on other leads and defenses, but declarer can always make nine tricks. +600 should be a well above average score for declarer.
