  1. Weak Two-Bid

This week starts off with a hand evaluation question. After East opens 2 and with West supporting hearts, what is the worth (or value ) of the K in South's hand? With the K sitting over (vs. under) the heart bidder and with West supporting hearts it is a very good chance the K will win a trick i.e., the K is probably sitting behind the A and West with length in hearts will not ruff the second heart.

But the K is not lending any values supporting honors in clubs or diamonds? Move the K to clubs where the club holding is say KQ10x or even to diamonds where the diamonds are KJ7x and now the K is worth far more as the K or the K than the K. And as can be seen double dummy , North can ruff the second heart taking away even the the trick value of the K.

Bidding* East opens the bidding 2 as a Weak Two-Bid (W2B) and South with 15 high card points and a good spade suit AKQ8x overcalls 2. West raises to 3 and North raises to 3. While South originally holds 15 hcp, with West raising hearts the value of the K in South's hand is very questionable (see discussion above) and thus, if all North could do was to raise to 3, South does not have any extra values to push go to 4 and passes. If E/W compete to 4, then about all South can do is compete to 4.

Play* In the play of this deal, sure enough clubs presents a problem making 4. East/West are entitled to win 1 heart + 1 diamond + 2 clubs, and thus only making 3. Give South the K instead of the K and making 4 is pretty easy.

  1. shows opening values (see commentary)

This is a very tricky deal to bid and play. When East picks up his hand, before any bidding, East does not have the values to Reverse , and thus, has the initial plan to open diamonds and rebid clubs. When South opens 1, however, East is now able to bid out shape by first bidding clubs then diamonds.

Bidding* In the auction here South opens 1. West with an opening hand of 12 high card points and 6 losers would like to get into the auction but with 5 hearts, smoothly passes. North passes and East bids 2 (see commentary above). East's club bid now freezes South out of the auction. West explores for a spade fit with 2 and East now shows values and shape by bidding 3. While not a real reverse, 3 shows opening values by forcing partner to the 4-level to correct to 4 over 3. West bids 3NT.

Play* North dutifully leads the 9, partner's suit. When declarer (West) sees dummy West can add up the points knowing North cannot have more than 3 hcp. When South shift to spades K then Q West wins the second spade trick planning to end play South with a third spade. In the play, West runs off diamonds forcing South to pitch and South pitches the J hoping North can can break the end play. But as South mush continue pitching on diamonds, eventually South is end played with a club forcing South to lead into East clubs or West hearts.

  1. penalty

Many might think this to be an unlucky deal for North/South (and it is to some degree) but in the bidding South must be aware of values and structure. In the auction both West bidding 2 and East bidding 3 have shown values, at least 10 high card points each, giving the opponents 20 hcp or half the points in the deck and with the opponents lead on clubs, South will be ruffing in hand with his long suit of trumps. Give dummy the void in clubs where declarer can ruff with the short trump suit and it might be a different story, but the structure in this deal should be giving all kinds of warning signs.

Bidding* After 2 passes, South opens the bidding 1 and West with 10 hcp (all working) and just 5 losers overcalls 2. North raises to 2 and East, also with 10 hcp (and the secret of the spade fit), bids 3 as a competitive bid and to warn West off of hearts. South with 17 support points for spades and a void in clubs competes to 3. When the bidding comes back around East, holding 5 spades and knowing partner has promised values (and the K to contribute to partner's values, doubles 3 for penalty.

Down 2 — NS −300

Play* The defense on this deal could play out several different ways. On opening lead, South could lead a club, partner's bid suit, but with a natural lead in hearts West leads the Q. When East win the spade finesse, he might consider leading a spade but holding the 986x (sitting over the 7 in dummy) it is best to make declarer (South) work for the spades and seeing the KJ7x in dummy returns a diamond. Now West's red suits (hearts and diamonds) are all set up and East still holds a winning position on spades as well as the A. N/S are down 2 doubled, -300 is never a good score.

  1. ugly Rule of 20 opening
  2. 4-card limit raise

This is a fun deal ... North has a sketchy Rule of 20 opening hand. Most disciplined players in tournament play would not open this hand because the K is a singleton, and thus, not making a contribution in a long suit. But this club play and I bet many will open 1.

Bidding* North in second seat opens the bidding 1 (see commentary) and South considers his options. Many might consider South to have a game forcing hand and bid 2 as 2/1 or with a 9-card fit even bid 4 (but 1 - 4 typically has a different meaning). In the auction here South bids 3 as a Reverse Bergen Raises bid showing a 4-card limit raise and now North will most likely make a game try or bid 4.

Play* In the play discovering the Q is very easy declarer will either finesse East leading the J up to the A here (as here) or if finessing West will cash the A first so finding the Q is easy. So now declarer plays the K to set up a club pitch on the Q.

  7. lead directional
  8. Q and K

When the opponents preempt they are NOT trying to find their best contract to play, they preempt to be obstructive at best. It is therefore important to have partnership agreements for bidding over preempts.

Bidding* West deals and opens 3. This is not a very disciplined preempt, but you cannot trust the opponents, many will preempt 3 here ignoring vulnerability and/or structure looking to confuse major suit bidding and West holding the A would really like a diamond lead against a slam contract. Over 3 North's bid of 3 shows a good 5+ card suit and the values for a sound opening bid. East holding 4 hearts J852 passes smoothly. South could easily bid 4, but with a really good club suit AKJ82 as a source of tricks and a heart fit holding a high honor of Qxx South has some interest in slam and cuebids 4. In the auction here, North ops for 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and South responds 5 as 1430 showing 1 keycard. North's bid of 5 asks about the missing Q and South's bid of 6 shows both the Q and the K. North bids 6.

Play* In the play, East leads the K and when North plays the Q switches to the K. This is not a difficult slam to play all declarer needs to do is sort out trump expecting East to hold some length in hearts.
