N/S should end up playing 3NT declared by South at almost all tables. The South hand is a little too strong to open 1NT. The 4333 distribution makes the hand a closer decision than you might think. Strict point counters will see 18 HCP and automatically open in one of the minors, but if you don't often upgrade good 14 HCP hands, it wouldn't be unreasonable to open the hand 1NT. On the actual hand, it will not matter. If South opens 1NT, North should bid 3NT. If South opens 1, North will either bid 1NT, or show an invitational hand with s (for some, this will be a 3 bid) and in either case, South will bid game. If South opens 1, as shown in the bidding diagram, then North's bid will depend on whether N/S use inverted minor suit raises by a passed hand. In any case, whether North shows a simple raise, or a limit raise, South should jump to 3NT. Note that if North were not a passed a hand, then South should not be in a hurry to jump to 3NT, but with North a passed hand, South can be sure that North won't have a four card suit, and that slam is highly unlikely, so can just bid 3NT.

With the lucky lie of the suit, 3NT is not in any danger, whether North or South declares it. All of the matchpoints will come down to the play of the suit. At most tables, South will be the declarer, and when West leads a and East cashes the top two s but doesn't continue the suit, declarer should place length with West, which makes cashing the top two s the best play if you are considering only the suit. However, the North hand has no entries outside of the suit, which is a strong reason to cash one high and then to finesse for the Queen. Certainly, if you were playing IMPs this would be the correct play. If North is the declarer in NT and East leads a , suggesting length there, it is even more likely that West has length and that it is better to take a second round finesse. As it happens, thoughtful play in s will not pay off on this hand, as those who cash the top s without thinking about the entry situation will be able to bring in the suit for no losers.

  3All pass

With ten cards in the minor and a void, I admit that opening 3 with the East hand would appeal to me, though it won't be to everyone's tastes. If East does open 3, N/S will have a hard time getting into the bidding. West might consider 3NT, but with slow tricks on the side, and questionable stoppers in both majors, 3NT would be quite a gamble. Both North and South will eye the vulnerability and will not want to step into the auction. It happens that N/S can make 3, but if either of them bid, their partner will certainly bid to at least game, and might even bid higher. If West decides to make a "matchpoint" double of 4 or any higher contract, N/S will not be happy with the result, as the defense should not have any difficulties taking one trick in each suit. If East opens 2, the reasoning will be similar, with N/S either being shut out of the bidding, or ending up in at least 4. If East passes, West will open 1 and if East then bids 1, South can overcall 1, and N/S have a chance to buy the contract for 3. Certainly +140 will be an excellent score for N/S, but East shouldn't allow 3 to play and should compete to the four level in the minors. As long as East is the declarer, a contract is protected from a lead and should make 10 tricks. A contract by West will only make nine tricks, assuming North leads their singleton , so E/W will need to play in s to have the best chance of a good score. Any E/W pair who manage to double N/S in 4 and set it should get a near top.

North should declare 4 at most tables, and the majority of the matchpoints will depend on East's opening lead. If East leads a , E/W will end up with a trick and a trick. On any other lead, careful play by declarer can result in 12 tricks. Let's say East leads a . Declarer can play the Queen. West can win the King and play a , but North immediately wins the Ace, plays the top two s and ruffs a carefully with the Q. Now declarer can play a low to the 8 and ruff another with the Jack. After finishing pulling trump, the good break will insure that declarer can pitch away both of their losers on the suit and finish with 12 tricks. Notice the importance of ruffing a high. Let's say declarer ruffs with a low trump and then leads the Queen. West can do well and choose not to cover this. Declarer will now not have the communication to ruff another , pull trump and investigate the break. If declarer decides to just play for a good break, they will still end up with 12 tricks, but there is the chance that declarer will go wrong. Ruffing the first high insures that declarer can take a trump finesse and end up with the lead in the North hand, and everything will go smoothly from there. +480 should be a good score for N/S.

  1. 2 keycards, no queen of trump

Good E/W bidders should get to 6 on this hand, whether North decides to overcall 2 or not. The North hand certainly has the right overall strength and suit quality to bid 2, but most experts strongly prefer to have a six card suit when overcalling in a minor, particularly vulnerable. The balanced nature of the hand also suggests passing, and I would expect a pass would be a particularly popular choice among experts if playing IMPs. It won't matter here. As the bidding shows, E/W should be able to get to 6 after an overcall. East has a normal 2 and West is way too strong to just raise to 3 as this would not be forcing. West has the overall values to bid 4 as a "splinter" bid, showing support and shortness, but this would imply a four card holding, so jumping to 4 looks better. The East hand is very powerful opposite West's jump to 4, despite holding only 10 HCP. East should check for keycards and bid slam. If North passes, the E/W bidding should go something like: 1-1-2-3(artificial, game forcing)-3(strongly implying shortness)-4NT-5-6.

If South leads a against a contract, declarer should have no problems ruffing one and pitching the other two losers on s to make 12 tricks. If South instead leads a round suit, declarer can make all 13 tricks. Let's say South leads a . Declarer wins, cashes one more high pitching a , then plays Ace and a ruff. After a ruff and another ruff, the Jack will be good and declarer can pull trump and claim. Just bidding to slam and making 12 tricks should be well above average for E/W and +1510 for bidding slam and making all 13 tricks should be a top.
