I am having North opens 1 in the auction here as the most common opening bid, but I would be very tempted to open North's hand 1NT. I typically mark my cc as opening 1NT with a good 14 to 17 high card points specifically for third seat opening 1NT, but North's hand even in first seat is so good I would be very very tempted to open 1NT.

Bidding* North deals and with a very nice hand of 14 hcp opens 1 (see commentary above). South responds 1 and West overcalls 2. North bids 2 (showing 4 card support) and South bids 3 showing extra length in spades or maybe some extra unbid values. North has a great hand with 6½ losers and bids 4.

Play* The play on this deal in 4 goes down 1, but it is a game I want to be in all the time. There is just no way in the bidding to account for a 4-0 split in spades and East having a singleton 8 and West the A.

All pass
  1. jump overcall - deceptive bid
  2. The Law: 9 trump & 17 points

I don't talk much about psyches or deceptive bidding, but a deal came up last week (see Board 12 Bridge Winners discussion) that made me think I should.

In the auction on this deal if after North opens 1 East overcalls 1 the 1 bid is like a small bump in the road. South will bid 2 and North will bid 2 and South will bid 2NT or 3NT and North/South should get to the correct 3NT contract. However, if East with favorable vulnerability (white vs. red) makes a jump overcall of 2, it is a different story altogether.

Bidding* North opens 1 and East makes a deceptive bid, not a psyche, of a jump overcall of 2. South makes his 3 natural call and West counting partner for 6 spades raises to 3. North has some options, North could double 3, but South might actually sit for 3 doubled. North bids 4 and the North/South partnership is now getting a bottom on this deal, as neither 5 nor 5 makes when 3NT was the correct contract.

If I get called to the table as director, what makes this auction legitimate is that East has favorable vulnerability (white vs. red), has 5 spades (within one of the expected length), has 9 high card points the expected values and holding KQ98x has a good suit and clearly wants a spade lead. On this deal 2 was an awe inspiring bid, I want the East player as my partner.

Contrast this to the auction on Board 12 from last week, it is not awe inspiring.

  3. 4 hearts
  4. Roman Keycard Gerber (spades)
  5. 2 keycards w/o Q

After East opens the bidding it should be very hard for West not to find slam on this deal.

Bidding* East deals and opens the bidding 1 and West responds 1. (N/S silent throughout.) East rebids 1NT showing 12-14 hcp balanced and West uses 2 as either NMF or XYZ (game forcing) depending on partnership agreements as forcing asking partner to further define his hand. East answers 2 showing 4 hearts. West jump rebid of 3 (after NMF) is certainly game forcing. East with 13 hcp and 8 losers doesn't have much else to say (already shown 2 spades with balanced hand) so bids 3NT. In the auction here West uses 4 as RKC Gerber for spades and when East shows 2 keycards, West is happy for 6.

It is possible, double dummy , for East holding the K to convert to 6NT but West is has control in this auction.

Play* A great deal of the play/defense on this contract depends on the opening lead of this auction. Not wanting to lead away from either the AJxx or the Qxxx South leads a club creating an opening lead finesse for declarer (West). Probably the best opening lead is for North to lead a spade (even away from the J97 and make declarer guess on the finesse of the diamonds or clubs.

  1. 2/1 Game Forcing
  2. minimal hand
  3. bidding out shape
  4. cheapest bid (Herbert)

Some might be tempted to say this is a sad deal missing slam, but this combined 26 high card points (N 12 + S 16) is pretty impossible to bid slam ... neither North or South have the values to make a slam forcing auction.

Bidding* North deals and with 12 hcp and 8 losers opens the bidding 1. South makes a 2/1 game forcing bid of 2. Under an not forcing auction West might compete, but after South make a 2/1 bid and with North/South not yet finding a fit and with unfavorable vulnerability (red vs. white) West passes and passes and passes. Some might have North rebid 2NT, but by partnership agreement in this auction 2 just shows a minimal hand. South bids 2 as natural and North bids 3, again the cheapest bid¹ is a minimal bid (now two minimal bid). South just bids 3NT.

¹ Herbert - By making the cheapest possible bid (like a second negative) shows that values are no more than previously stated and very weak.

Play* The results on this board will most likely be determined by the play and defense. double dummy says that N/S can make 7 (as shown here) but this only works if declarer (North) double finesses the clubs for the QJ and drops the doubleton QJ ... lucky that North has the 8.

  1. Jacoby 2NT
  2. 12-17 high card points balanced

So what is the real value (worth to a hand or a contract) of a singleton ace? or the value of a king in partner's short suit?

Bidding* East deals and opens the bidding 1. Some might have West with 4 hearts and a singleton spade Splinter in 3, but with a singleton A this distorts the value of West's hand. West has 14 hcp, a full opening hand, so first responds 2NT as Jacoby 2NT. East with 14 hcp and a balanced hand responds 3NT (others might have different response systems). West corrects to 4.

In this deal the A is not lending much value to this contract other than the face value of 4 hcp. Yes the A makes the K in partner's hand a good trick but West only has one spade anyway, it is a wasted trick. Move the A to say the A and move the K to say the K and with the same values (just moving them around) 6 would be a certainty.
