E/W interference will make it difficult for N/S to decide how high to bid in s, although even if left to themselves, it would take some aggressive bidding to get to slam. With poor suit quality and a five card side suit, I would not open the North hand 2, but many will do so. If they do, unless South has a way to ask about side suit shortness, I expect South will just sign off in 4. Assuming North passes, the East hand will be a weak 2 opening for most pairs, unless they play strict suit quality requirements. If East does pass, I think the South hand is good enough to open 2NT, and now North has a good chance to drive to slam. At the majority of tables where East opens 2, South will be faced with a difficult choice. A 2NT overcall of a weak two shows approximately the same strength as a 1NT opening, but the range has to be wider. The South hand is again too strong for this. Although the stopper isn't great, with a side source of tricks in s, it's quite possible that game will make even with s only stopped once. So, South should plan on doubling and then bidding NT next. Of course, the opponents are not going to cooperate with South, as West has an easy raise to 4. With a void and great distribution, the North hand should not hesitate to bid 4, and indeed is almost too strong for that, given that North passed in the first place. Unfortunately, there is no room for North to show this hand, and bidding 4 is really the only option. The main decision will end up resting with South.

First, South should be aware that the opponents bidding makes it a near certainty that North is short in s. Next, South will need to consider whether North could only have a four card suit on this bidding. For most expert pairs, North would double 4 with the values to bid, but only a four card suit. So, 4 shows a likely five card suit, or occasionally (as here) a six card suit inappropriate for opening 2. South should recognize the strength of their hand opposite a five card suit and shortness. If North has as little as KQxxx and K, slam might make. Most E/W pairs will not have discussed what a 4NT bid by South would mean here, and in any case, it's not clear that asking about keycards will really help South decide if slam is good. As it happens, things will work out well if South just bids 6, as North has no keycards and no queen of trump, but slam will make anyway thanks to the void and the good trump break. I don't think many will bid to slam, but those who do will get a nice matchpoint reward.

  1. Poor hand, poor suit

Most N/S pairs should play 4 here. At this vulnerability, the South hand is not a certain 2 opening bid. Those who use Losing Trick Count evaluations and the "Rule of 2/3/4" will see eight losers in the South hand, and at unfavorable vulnerability, this will suggest passing. If South does pass, West might open 2, North will double, and N/S will end up in 4. If West also passes, the N/S bidding is likely to be 1-1-2-2 (game forcing)-3-4, or 1-1-2-2NT(to sign off)-3(game forcing)-4. All roads look like they lead to 4 declared by South. With the suit working, the only certain loser is a . Almost all of the matchpoints will come down to declarer's play of the trump suit. If declarer starts with the King, then a trump loser will be inevitable. However, let's say that declarer starts with the Ace, as I expect most players will. When West shows up with the Jack, should declarer play the King next, or finesse for the Queen. Players who have heard the rule "Eight ever, nine never" might count their nine card trump suit and conclude that they should play the King next. However, this is incorrect. The trump position on this hand is an example of a bridge principle known as "Restricted Choice ".

As a general rule, Restricted Choice refers to a situation where an opponent has played an honor when more than one honor card is missing in a suit that declarer is trying to establish. The most common situation is the one shown here, when declarer has a nine card suit missing the Queen and Jack, but no other high cards. If one of the opponents plays the Queen or the Jack on the first round, then it is twice as likely that they started with a singleton, and therefore playing to finesse their partner for the other honor is the odds on correct play. The reason for this is that with QJ, West is approximately equally likely to play either honor, but with Q or J only they will be forced to play the one card they have (their choice is restricted.) Or, another way to think of it is that when West plays an honor, they might have started with QJ, Q or J and as all three of these possibilities are equally likely, then twice as often they will have started with just a singleton honor. If the reasoning behind this doesn't make sense to you, then you can read up further online about Restricted Choice, which will also help you recognize some of the less common situations in which it applies. Or, you can just trust me that the correct play here is to finesse East for the Queen. Those who understand Restricted Choice will be rewarded on this hand, as East does indeed have Qxx. As very few if any pairs will be playing slam, +680 should be a near top for N/S.

It's hard to see how N/S can go plus on this hand unless E/W get into the bidding and get in trouble. South has a normal 1 opening, and with a poor suit and poor vulnerability, and no chance of locking the opponents out of a fit, West doesn't really have a 1 bid. Some Wests will overcall anyway. A 1NT contract by South looks likely whether West bids 1 or passes. With almost all of the cards sitting wrong and none of the suit breaking, it's hard to see how South can prevail in 1NT without some serious defensive errors. Let's say West leads a and declarer puts in the Queen. In a situation where you can't beat the dummy in partner's led suit against NT, it is standard to give count, so East should signal that they have a doubleton. Declarer is likely to next lead a . No matter which finesse declarer takes, it won't work and West can win. Notice the importance of East giving count. If declarer started with Ax, West can lead another next. However, if declarer started with Axx, continuing the suit will be wrong. If West errs and leads another , this might be the only way for declarer to make, as they can now lead towards the KQ twice, or set up a slow trick while the defense can do no better than taking two s, three s and a . As long as West doesn't lead another or a when in with s, East will eventually get in with a and can continue s, allowing the defense to score three tricks, three tricks and a . If East wins the Ace and continues the suit, this may also give declarer the timing to scrape together seven tricks. Certainly going plus at all on this hand should be well above average for N/S.

  1. Four card limit raise or better

The bidding might get competitive at a high level on this hand, particularly if N/S are aggressive bidders. West has a normal 1 opening. Some North's will overcall 1, but the North hand is better than the HCP would indicate and for many pairs, the North hand is strong enough to double, planning to bid s next. For those who have been reading my analysis regularly, you might think that the East hand is our old friend the "Mixed Raise". A Mixed Raise typically shows 7-9 HCP, at least four card trump support, shortness somewhere and at least a little defense. The East hand might look perfect for this. However, with five card trump support, a side five card suit and two key honors, I think the East hand is too good for a mixed raise. If you have a way to show a Mixed raise over the opponents takeout double (which most experts do), it wouldn't be the worst bid in the world, but showing the East hand as a four card limit raise seems like the best approach to me. If East does show a Mixed Raise, West will have no reason to look for game (and given that E/W can make 11 tricks in s, this perhaps validates the idea that the East hand is too strong for a Mixed Raise.)

Assuming that East shows a four card limit raise, the distribution and honor structure of the West make the West hand better than a minimum, and West should at least make a game try of some sort. North won't be thrilled at having to bid at the three level, but should persevere with 3. East should certainly bid game over a suit game try, and South will be on the hook to decide what to do. With nothing wasted in either s or s, honors that are likely to be useful, and a fit, I think the South hand is worth bidding 4 despite holding only 3 HCP, when North has shown a strong hand with their bidding. If N/S do bid to 4, the bidding might not be done. East will recognize that their side is not likely to set 4 when West can't double and can persevere with 5. Now North will be on the spot. Some will pass, some will double and some will bid 5. As 5 is making and 5 is only going down two tricks, it turns out that bidding 5 will be best and that doubling will be a disaster. Sacrificing in 5 will not be a top for N/S as some N/S pairs will be allowed to play s at a lower level. E/W pairs should do well for bidding and making game, though top scores will go to those who are doubled in 5.
