E/W will need to have some constraint on this hand to avoid getting a poor matchpoint score by doubling 5 or playing 5. The North hand is certainly better than average for a non vulnerable weak two, but unless you have a very light opening style, is not good enough to open 1. I'm not a believer in hands with a decent six card suit being "between" a one and two level opening and would always choose one or the other. South has an excellent hand for s and in fact, it's possible that a slam is making, though it would be difficult for South to determine that North has the right hand ( void, Ace or singleton, Ace and black suit Ace.) South should be content with trying to get to game and keep the opponents out of a possible game. South could try several approaches, bidding 2NT to show strength, jumping straight to 4 or bidding 3 assuming this is natural and forcing. 3 has the advantage of pinpointing the lead South would like, if E/W do get into the auction. West is strong enough to bid whatever South does, even if South bids 4. East has five card support, but nothing else. East should certainly raise West to 4, but South should be willing to bid 5 and now E/W will be on the spot. If West decides to double, East might pull this to 5, but neither 5 doubled nor 5 (which South will double) will be a good result for E/W as 5 is cold, and 5 will go down three tricks. +450 should be a fairly common score for N/S and anything better than that in either direction will score well.

South will have a difficult decision if North overcalls 2 on this hand. East has three card support, but a truly awful hand, and I would not bid 2 even at the favorable vulnerability. South has enough values to bid opposite a vulnerable overcall, but no clear bid. 3 is probably the best bid, and North should ensure that their side gets to 5 if South bids 3. The only way I can see N/S getting to 4 is if South decides to raise with a doubleton . It turns out that 4 isn't a great contract, but noticed how much better it is if South's doubleton honor were Jx. The main reason I have shown 3 in the bidding diagram is to illustrate a point unknown to many advancing players. Namely, that a two level overcall, particularly vulnerable, should normally show a six card or very good five card suit, and thus it is often acceptable to raise on a doubleton when you have the appropriate point count and no other suitable bid. This is particularly true when partner's suit is a minor, but can even apply to a 2 overcall. On this specific hand, 3 is an acceptable alternative, but what would South do with say a hand like xxxx Kx AQxx Qxx?

As it happens, with the friendly break, both 4 and 5 will make. Even if declarer is sloppy in a contract and blocks the suit (by playing the King and then playing the 5 to the Queen, 4 will still make 11 tricks. I expect a fair number of pairs will be only playing in a partial, so getting to game should be a good result for N/S.

  1. Mini Splinter , unknown shortness, minimal game force

After West opens 1, the vulnerability is right for North to preempt, and certainly a six card preempt at the three level isn't unreasonable at favorable vulnerability, but with a poor suit and no shortness, this is not the hand to do it. Assuming that North passes, East will have to evaluate their hand. Those who have been following my analysis for a while might think that the East hand is our old friend the "Mixed Raise" (a hand with 7-9 HCP, four card support, some shortness and some defense.) However, similar to Board 4 from last week (5/30/2018), I think the East hand is too strong, despite only holding 8 HCP. Last week, the issue was a fifth trump, a side Ace and a side five card suit. This week, it is the presence of a void and a good side five card suit. Voids are a powerful holding in a known nine card or longer fit, and are often evaluated as being worth five points in support of partner. Thus the East hand evaluates as being worth about 13 points, even if nothing is added for the suit. So, I would call the East hand a Game Force , rather than making an invitational "Mixed Raise." One common expert treatment I've shown here is to use the cheapest double jump shift over a major suit opening (i.e. 1-3, or 1 - 3NT) to show a game forcing hand with less than opening count, shortness somewhere and four card trump support (usually 9-12 HCP.) Note that the location of the shortness is not specified, but that the major suit opener can ask where the shortness is by making the next cheapest bid, if they have slam interest. (E.g. 1-3NT-4(asking)-4// would pinpoint the shortness.) A corollary to this approach is that direct splinters show about 13-15 HCP (and note that 1-3NT is now the way to show 13-15 HCP with shortness). With 16+ HCP and shortness, most experts would start with 2NT. Note that this is significantly different from many pairs I have seen who use a Splinter bid with a wide range of hand strengths. The difficulty with wide ranging splinters is that a Splinter takes up so much space, that it is difficult to work out whether the combined hands should move toward slam when the Splinter bidders strength is unknown. The above described approach is one that I recommend and is worthy of discussion with your regular partners.

1NTAll pass

Lots of players may be bidding on this hand with hands that are really too weak, starting with West. The modern trend is to open all 12 HCP hands, but the West hand is pretty ugly, and I wouldn't blame anyone for passing it. If one of the small s were a small then passing would be even more attractive. North also has a questionable hand that many will bid with. Undisciplined bidders will see a six card and automatically bid 2. However, with a poor suit, and two outside Aces, the hand is inappropriate in almost every way for bidding 2. Even 1 looks like a poor bid, as N/S are vulnerable and vulnerable overcalls should show a good suit, or significant extra strength. If North does bid, East might double, and E/W could end up in 1NT still, but will be even higher if North has bid 2. Although N/S can make 2, it turns out that they can do even better defending. Assuming North leads a against a 1NT contract, moderately careful defense will lead to eight tricks for N/S. It's hard to see how E/W can ever do better than -100 on this hand, so -100 is likely to be above average and anything better than that will be a near top for E/W.
