E/W will have some bidding challenges on this hand, whether South overcalls 1 or not. In fact, if South overcalls and North raises, this is likely to help E/W get to slam, though I think good pairs can bid slam even if N/S are silent. The key to bidding slam, which many pairs will miss, is for both East and West to realize that their hands are a lot more powerful than the HCP would indicate. The bidding shown might be one way to get to slam. East might even be tempted to bid a grand at this point, though West's jump to slam would tend to indicate a void somewhere, since West didn't bother with Blackwood.

What will happen if South passes? Many players with the West hand will bid 1, but the bidding can get very awkward from that point and West will never be able to describe their hand adequately. East will bid 2 and now West may have to bid 3 to show a Game Force , but not necessarily imply s, and the bidding will be at the four level before West shows their best suit. A much better plan is for West to start with 2 planning to bid s twice if appropriate. The bidding should proceed 1-2-2-2-3...with West now knowing about East's shortness and being able to drive to slam. The bidding point here is that if you have game forcing values, and partner opens a minor and you have a four card or longer major but a longer minor, it is best to bid your minor first, and show your shape naturally. When you have less than game forcing values, it is usually best to show the major first. These principles are especially important when the opening bid has been 1. It is such a strong advantage to immediately establish a Game Force with a 2 bid, and show your shape naturally that this would always be my choice if my suit were longer than my major.

I suspect many will not get to slam on this hand, even though both East and West have a very powerful hand for s. There might also be some tables where E/W bid a grand slam, and there will certainly be some tables where E/W settle in NT. If the defense does anything but cash the Ace on opening lead, declarer can make all 13 tricks with careful play. Bidding slam should be well above average even if declarer only makes 12 tricks.

For many players, the East hand will be an automatic opening bid, especially if they open most 11 HCP hands. For bidders with a more standard opening bid style, there is a long standing debate whether a hand holding an AK and an A is an automatic opening bid or not. Certainly, if ever there was a hand to pass with that holding, the East hand is it. 4333 distribution, no four card major, no honor in the four card suit, no good spot cards. Only the vulnerability favors East opening. If East's black suits were switched, I would open 1, and I even think it is a better choice on the actual hand than opening 1. If East opens 1, N/S might well still end up in 3NT as South will often overcall 2. The best chance for N/S to end up in good contract is for South to bid 3 despite their lack of shortness and the presence of outside strength, and for North to pass. If East opens 1, as I think best, instead of 1, then South will be in a more difficult position, not usually being able to bid 2 naturally, and not wanting to preempt with 3, with a mediocre suit over a 1 opening.

N/S have plenty of tricks in NT once the Ace is knocked out, but there's the little problem of the suit. Even if East doesn't lead a on opening lead, they will have a second chance when in with the Ace. Let's just say that East leads a . Declarer's best chance is to play small from dummy and win with the Queen, trying to convince East that West has the AJT. However, even in this highly optimistic scenario, East only needs to hold up the Ace for one round to give West a chance to pitch a discouraging . Even if East takes the Ace right away, it should be clear to cash one high and see if West encourages, rather than going back to s right away. The bottom line is that it takes a major defensive error for 3NT to not go down two tricks and I expect -200 to be a common score for N/S. Any N/S pair who manage to go plus will get a bushel full of matchpoints.

  1. Transfer

E/W look destined to play 2 at most tables, if they are playing a strong NT. Thanks to the unfortunate breaks in the minors, 2 will have a hard time making, even with the Ace onside. After West opens 1NT and East bids 2 as a transfer, some Souths will double. South doesn't quite have a strong enough suit to do this with confidence, and with values in s also, will not be sure whether a lead or a lead will be best for the defense. Whether South does double and North leads a , or North makes their more natural lead of a , declarer will not have any easy time of the hand. With a poor suit in the East and only a seven card fit, declarer's best approach is to try to crossruff. However, North will be overruffing in s, and the suit cannot be set up either. The best chance for declarer might be if North leads a , and declarer wins the King. Declarer can play Ace, ruff a , lead a . If South ducks this, declarer wins the King, ruffs another and leads a towards the Ace. It won't be clear to South whether to ruff this or not. If South ducks, declarer can ruff yet another and end up with four top side suit tricks, the Ace and three ruffs. If South ruffs, the defense still isn't secure, Even if South leads a to the Queen and North leads a , declarer can win the Ace, ruff another and lead another , and South is pickled, being forced to let declarer score the Ace or the Queen. Certainly the play is difficult enough that +110 should be an above average score for E/W.

Most tables will play either a contract by West or a contract by South on this hand. With controls in all three side suits, and 10 HCP, the West hand is a little too strong to preempt. If West does open 3, this will not be good for their side, as it might lead to South pinching their nose and bidding 3NT, which should make, or West might be stuck playing in 3 and going down two. Assuming that West opens a more normal 1, some North's will overcall 2. However, one of the areas where experts are more cautious in bidding is when making a two level overcall, particularly in a minor, and even more particularly when vulnerable. The North hand has such a poor suit and minimal HCP, that I suspect most experts would pass without thinking too much about it. As it happens, on the actual hand, if North overcalls, South might well push their side to 3NT, expecting a better hand from North. If North passes, East will bid 1NT and now it will be hard for N/S to get to game, with E/W both showing some values. In fact, E/W might find themselves shut out of the bidding entirely, if South doesn't reopen when 2 is passed back around to them. As it happens, 3NT declared by South is highly likely to make. West is almost certain to lead a , and declarer can win and lead a low . Now, unless West switches to the King, declarer will prevail even if they get s wrong. Furthermore, the distribution of the suit will make it a high percentage play to finesse East for the Queen. In a contract, South should make 11 tricks, whether the defense gets a ruff or not. Thus, any E/W pair who buy the contract for 2 and do no worse than off one will have a good score.
