Most of the matchpoints on this hand will be won or lost during the bidding. North has the first choice and will preempt with either 4 or 5 at most tables. If North opens 5, this might well end the bidding. West has a good hand, but with five losers, would be rolling the dice in assuming that East can cover four of them, by bidding 5. If North opens with only 4, then West has a reasonable 4 bid and South will need to decide whether to bid 5 or not. Certainly South will suspect that their side might not have enough defense to beat the contract, and at IMPs, South would likely bid 5 to take out "insurance" against 4 making. At matchpoints it's less clear, and South might well pass, hoping that E/W are going down.

Curiously, both 4 and 5 have chances to make, though both will go down with best defense. Let's consider 5 first. East will lead a high and will have to decide how to proceed. Some East pairs will continue another high without thinking too much about it, but this will be disastrous for the defense. North can ruff, pull trump and then pitch two losers away, one on the K and one on the Jack. A more careful defender in the East hand will come up with the right play. Counting both dummy's s and East's own s will reveal that either West or North has a singleton. With North known to have at seven or eight s, North is much more likely to have the singleton. So, East should switch to a . Certainly this will be a disaster if North started with 2281 distribution, but will be the right play when North started with 3181 distribution (as on the actual hand) or when North started with 2182 distribution and several other distributions when North has a seven card suit.

The defense must also be careful if N/S are defending a 4 contract. The biggest danger is that North chooses to start with their singleton . If South wins two rounds of s then declarer will have an easy path to ten tricks no matter what South continues. Double dummy, Declarer can make even if South wins only one and switches to a , but it will be more difficult. On any other lead declarer will not have enough dummy entries to avoid four losers as long as the defense is careful. All in all, I suspect that a plus score should be pretty good for either side, and the rare pairs who make game in either direction will have a top.

As with the last hand, the bidding will determine most of the matchpoints on this hand. With good distribution, good intermediate cards and no rebid problems, the South hand looks like a normal opening bid to me, but some will pass. If South passes and comes back in later, N/S might end up in a doubled contract. E/W might be pleased with setting a contract, as double dummy 4 will go down, but in reality, this will not be a top result. At most tables, I think South will open and West will bid 4. North does not have the values to bid 5, but with nine HCP opposite opening count and a sure trick in s, will consider doubling 4. Regardless of whether North doubles, a minor suit lead is needed to set the contract. Let's say that North instead leads a . Declarer can play the jack, and when South wins the Ace, South will likely switch to a high . Declarer might at first be worried about ducking this, as South might have started with Kx, but the opening bid in the South hand makes it more likely that South holds KQ. So, declarer is much better placed by ducking the . When South continues the suit with a low one, declarer can back their judgment by putting in the Jack. When this wins it is clear sailing for declarer as they can play a to the Ace, pitch a on the K and then take the trump finesse to play for an overtrick. As it happens, if South switches to a on winning the opening lead, it will be much harder for declarer, though they can still make 4 if they take the right line of play. A lead at trick one will be the most interesting. Declarer can win the and lead a . If South splits their honors, declarer can duck, and now South has to find a continuation to defeat the contract. If South instead leads a , declarer can ruff and lead a to the Jack and now the defense is pickled. As 4 requires careful play to make even on a friendly lead, +420 should be an excellent score for E/W.

I don't think E/W will diagnose that 3NT is their best spot on this hand, but North will also have a difficult bidding decision if E/W get to 4. The West hand is too strong to open 1NT and will be opened 1 at most tables. Most North pairs will not have a way to show both s and s over a 1 opening, the exception being those who play "top and bottom" cue bids. So, North will have to decide on whether to bid 1 or 1. It looks like the North hand is good enough to start with 1, planning to bid s later. If North starts with 1 instead, then the bidding will likely be something like p-1-1-p-p-1NT-2-2-...or p-1-1-x-p-4. As it happens, if North starts with 1, East will bid 1, and South might take advantage of the vulnerability and squeak out a 2 raise. Whether South raises or not, West will either cue bid or jump straight to 4 and North will have to decide whether to sacrifice or not. On the one hand, if South has raised s, it looks like 5 will not go down very many and might even make opposite the right dummy. On the other hand, North does have some good defense and 4 might be going down. On the actual hand, what will be the right decision? It isn't completely clear as the defense against 4s isn't as straight forward as it might appear.

Assume N/S are defending a contract. If South leads their singleton , North should quickly give South a ruff and the defense will be easy. But, what if South leads a ? Now North will win and might continue s, assuming their tricks will not go away. Although they are right that their top two winners will not disappear, they will lose the chance to get a ruff, as declarer can win the , pull trump, play three rounds of s and lead a to the Jack and Queen. I suspect that most pairs will manage to defeat 4, so that sacrificing in s will prove to be a losing proposition. In a contract, a lead is required to hold declarer to nine tricks, and this lead will not be obvious. On any other lead, declarer can win, lead two rounds of trump and then work on setting up the suit, with dummy's trump Jack available as an entry.

  1. Two places to play

N/S will play in a contract at many tables, but some E/W pairs will get to 3 and a few might even end up in a contract. For most pairs, the West hand will be too weak to open 1. After North opens 1, East has no good bid despite holding 13 HCP. Some Easts will venture a four card overcall of 1, but I would want a better suit to do that. Assuming East passes, South has just enough to bid 1 and West will again have to decide whether to bid. With such a poor suit, vulnerable, and facing two unlimited opponents, 2 looks like a dangerous bid. However, if West passes and 2 is passed back around to West, now it looks much more appealing to bid, as the East is marked with a good hand, and E/W are likely to have a fit, since N/S have found a fit. As long as East competes at some point, the key for E/W on this hand will be to not bid higher than 3. Can N/S reasonably compete to 3? South has a fifth , but no distribution at all. North has a better hand then their HCP would indicate, but not enough to be sure they want to compete at this vulnerability. In fact, 3 only makes because of the friendly trump suit. It looks like neither North nor South have a good hand for competing, so 3 will be allowed to play at most tables.

The play of the hand will not have much to it, whether the contract is in s, s or s. A contract has four pretty unavoidable losers. A and a contract also have four unavoidable losers and there will be a guess for the Queen. However, assuming North has opened the bidding, declarer should concede their losers before making a guess. Once South shows up with the Ace, it should be clear to play North for the Queen. +140 in either direction should be an good matchpoint score.
