It is a rarity to see a complex original plan being implemented in actual play. North's hand is so distributional that a slightly light HCP arsenal strongly suggests opening. With seven clubs and five hearts, the plan will be to bid and rebid clubs, then bid and rebid hearts, showing five hearts and longer clubs, with less overall strength than required for a reverse. What are the odds that one can actually achieve that goal? Slim, probably.

But once in a while it may be possible! South responds 1 and North, per plan, rebids 2, considering a reverse a huge misdescription of at least the club suit's quality. Shift the A to the club suit in return for a baby spade and I'd reverse into 2. As it is, a 2 rebid is just fine.

South has a handly tool, "third suit forcing," the other minor when opener bids and rebids a minor suit, to create an artificial force. For some players, the ensuing auction is game forcing. For others, merely invitational. Let's go with the high road, so a Game Force . Incidentally, after opening and rebidding diamonds, 3 becomes the artificial force.

Opener is pleased to bid his hearts. Responder, who was fishing for three card spade support, had clearly missed that boat, but when 2 was a Game Force, 2NT can allow North the opportunity to complete the description of his hand. 3!! We DID IT! North has described a hand with five hearts and six or more clubs, along with minimum values!

OK, big deal. 3NT and out on this particular deal, but other hands might locate a 5-3 heart fit or pinpoint a weakness for notrump such that a 4 or 5 contract would be better. I'm for science on some hands, this one being one. Play to set up the club suit for tricks while there are entries! Duck one diamond to sever EW communications.

Should EW take the sacrifice? That probably won't garner many matchpoints, because not so many pairs reach minor suit games, so probably just defend and hope to set this one.

if South opens the trashy 11 HCP hand (doubleton Q gives the "trash" designation), NS will be unable to stay out of this poor game gamble.

North has no problem sitting on the 2 rebid, preferring the 4-4 heart fit to the known 5-3 fit, especially in light of the 4333 pattern and the wasted J. All assets would have to be working overtime to justify another bid (remove the J and substitute the Q for a small club).

This hand justifies bidding the three card diamond suit by fetching a heart preference or a 3NT contract. Either one works, and South has justification for either choice -- two honors in hearts, plenty of stoppers in clubs. With 26 HCP, NS must choose one game or the other

Making the game will require a bit of play and a bit of luck, primarily in the manner of playing the heart suit, the luck being in finding that suit 3-3.

Pass4All pass

North has a good suit, good controls, and a five-loser hand. Opposite any reasonable raise there should be a good play for game more than fifty percent of the time. That's all we can expect. There are no guarantees in bidding, Even if North had made a game try, South would have accepted. For example, a 3 short suit game try would excite South --- basically no club wastage, a diamond ruffing value, a heart honor, a sure trick in the trump ace, and a fourth trump. Any red-blooded pair should be in game: so much so, I'd bet on the pairs who bid this game rather than those who stopped short.

Yet there are days and hands where the cards are unusually held by the opponents. Consider the 5-1 hearts with the king and all intermediates over the queen. Then there is the losing diamond finesse.

One way to look at this hand is that if either red king is in the position favorable to declarer, the game will make. That's a 75% proposition, and it's just bad luck that today falls in the 25% group. Furthermore, East has a built-in lead so there should be no missteps in the defense.

Oh -- If East bids, North - South may slow down a bit, and the only result of bidding might be to keep the opponents from bidding game. But the overcall of 2 will not deter North much, perhaps only to the extent of making a game try rather than bidding 4 quickly.

North has a source of tricks and enough points to feel secure that no lead is likely to devastate South. What could go wrong? xxx AKQJ AKxx xx would be a bummer, but perhaps South should open 1 with that.

All right, I am going to confess that knowing the result of this deal almost affected the analysis of the proper auction. Cover the EW cards for a while, please, as the positive features of the NS cards are discussed.

Preliminarily, let it be known that the NS cards were put into Dealmaster Pro and 7000 random hands were generated for EW. Then all 7000 hands were analyzed to determine the number of tricks that could be taken in hearts, and the results compiled for statistical review. The expectation would be that the Q would fall doubleton about 12.8% of the time, allowing all thirteen tricks to be taken just shy of that number (absent an opening lead ruff, or clubs breaking worse then 4-2). The expectation for twelve tricks to be taken would be considerably higher (all 3-2 heart breaks plus 4-1 breaks with the Q "onside" -- another 5+%, so the slam ought to make nearly 3/4 of the time, by reckoning. The computerized results were different, and the results were run twice for verification, pretty much duplicating the numbers. According to the random hands, a grand slam can be made 23% of the time and a small slam 52% of the time, making it a reasonable proposition to bid slam with these cards. There are days when expectations are not fulfilled. See board 5. The diagrammed bidding is explained next:

North made a normal Two Over One Game Force , holding heart support an ace, and a really nice six card suit. South made a waiting 2 bid (do you really want to reverse into 9875??) and North promised three hearts for the 2 rebid. 3 was a control bid toward slam (game was already forced, and the 3 bid had the extra flavor of denying a spade control). North's 3 bid promised a spade control (because without one in either hand, there is no reason not simply to bid game. After 4, North owned up to the A and the nice slam is reached., OUCH!

North might well have bid 3NT directly over 3, but with nine tricks off the top and a development trick in the opponent's suit, along with 26 HCP, a bit more than a "simple" 3NT bid is fully justified. There is a risk, however, that the double does seem to induce bidding from South, and that COULD prove an uncomfortable invitation if accepted. Fortunately for North, South was not dealt five hearts and four spades, but conversely, it is too bad that South was not dealt the QJxxx along with the K, for then twelve tricks would come in handy when South could justify another bid and slam would be reached, making! The extra strength shown by the double first, 3NT later, does not induce the current South to more action and the final contract, game in notrump, is the proper destination.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

Don't expect to have anyone bid 7 on this deal, which makes only because both hearts and clubs break 3-3 (multiplying these two 35.53% probabilities give a likelihood of making thirteen tricks in clubs at 12.62%.

Much more likely, bidding long suits, finding no fit, and settling on 3NT after considering stoppers, is that twelve tricks will be made by the simple expedient of unblocking the A and ducking a heart later, happiness following.
