I suspect it will be hard for N/S to stay out of trouble on this hand and end up in a making contract. The singleton K makes the North hand weaker than the HCP would indicate, but with two four card majors, and a full 13 HCP, it's hard to see doing anything but opening 1. South will respond with 1 insuring that West will not be tempted to enter the building. Depending on the specific N/S agreements, North will rebid either 1 or 1NT and now South will have the major decision on the hand. Once upon a time, 12 HCP opposite opening count would be an automatic Game Force , but the modern trend to open many 11 HCP hands and all 12 HCP hands suggests that South is not quite good enough to Game Force, especially holding a singleton Jack. If South bids an invitational 3 or 2NT bid, then North will also have a decision to make. The King looks much better opposite length in the South hand, but North should be able to see that there is no clear source of tricks in NT, and 5 is almost certainly out of reach. If North passes either 2NT or 3 by South, this will work out well for their side, as these are the last two reasonable contracts to play that will make. 3 and 3 will also make, but it is hard to see how N/S can get to either contract.

If N/S play in a NT contract, giving up one trick will lead to eight tricks total when the suit breaks, thanks tot he suit also breaking. However, it's hard to see how declarer can end up with a ninth trick without some serious misdefense. A will certainly scuttle any chances for an extra trick, as the defense will already be up to five tricks. It's just possible that West will lead a , then play on s again when in with a , but with East discouraging s at trick one, it shouldn't be hard for East to avoid the trap of leading s a second time.

In a contract, the play is a little hazardous, given the poor minor suit breaks. Giving up a and embarking on a crossruff looks best. Declarer should be able to come to two high s, one high , one high , two high s and three extra trump tricks on the cross-ruff to make nine tricks. Any positive score on this hand should be good for N/S as many will play 3NT and go down.

  Pass2
33All pass

The South hand isn't exactly an automatic 2 opening, with only a moderate suit, no shortness and the vulnerability unfavorable for N/S. I expect that most will open 2 despite the drawbacks. If South passes throughout, then E/W might buy the hand for 2, but this shouldn't happen often, as South has an easy 2 bid if 2 is passed back around to them. So, the fate of the hand will mostly be decided at the three level, as both E/W and N/S might compete to that level. If South does open 2, there is a chance that E/W will end up 4. If N/S play a contract, the defense should be able to take their five tricks without too many issues. Even if West leads a and declarer tries to take a quick pitch of a loser, East can effectively ruff low without losing any of the E/W natural trump tricks. At first glance it looks like a contract has four unavoidable losers, but good declarers might make things difficult for the defense. Let's say North leads a . Declarer can win the King and should immediately lead a . If South has shown a long suit, North should recognize the danger and grab eht Ace immediately, but many players will duck without too much though. This will allow declarer to win the Q and then pitch the King away on the Ace, ending up with only three trump losers. Making 10 tricks in a contract will be an above average score for E/W even if they are not in game. The few pairs who play in 4 and make the contract should have a near top, though they might get pipped out by anyone who is able to double a poor N/S sacrifice in 4 and end up +500.

  1. Fit showing jump (4+ s, 5+s)

The auction is likely to get competitive on this hand, with both sides owning a 10+ card major suit fit. West has a normal 1 opener and North should overcall 1 which will be followed by a 1 by East. South will want to compete to a high level in s, but it would be useful to show their long s along the way. The reason for this isn't because South would ever want to play s instead of s, but to aid North in knowing how high they should compete. One common expert way of doing this is known as a "fit-showing jump". Experts often use this in competition, or by a passed hand. Under this agreement, a jump in a new suit shows at least five cards in the new suit, at least four cards in support of partner's suit, and the point values to compete to the level of the jump bid. Here, South will probably want to compete to 4, but as the fit-showing jump is forcing for one round, South is allowed to be stronger than a minimum. Notice on this hand how useful is for North to know that N/S have a double fit. It is now easy for North to compete to 5. And, in fact, North might even find a 6 bid, despite holding low doubletons in both of the opponents suits. On the actual hand, a 6 bid has the chance to work out spectacularly. If East leads a high , declarer will ruff, pull trump, pitch a loser on a long and make their slam. It won't be common, as most players won't consider a six level sacrifice, but I expect there to be a few scores for N/S of 6 doubled and making. A contrace will have little to the play. With matched distribution in s, declarer has no realistic chance to pitch away their two losers and will make 11 tricks on any lead.

All pass

Despite holding two doubletons, the North hand is appropriate for opening 1NT. Certainly given North's exact distribution, it would be ok to open 1 and rebid 1, but for many expert pairs this would promise an unbalanced hand with shortness somewhere. For pairs with this agreement, it is essential to open 1NT on hands such as the hand North has here. If North opens 1 and South responds with 1 or 1 and North can't bid 1, what would North have to do? Rebidding 1NT would be an underbid by about a Queen and 2NT would be an overbid by the same amount. On the other hand, if the N/S agreements allow North to rebid 1 with this distribution, then it is more attractive to open 1, as the North hand doesn't have good stoppers in their doubletons, and opening 1NT might well wrong-side any final contract, as North has no tenaces. Notice that the even if North is able to rebid 1, they will often be forced to then raise 1NT to 2NT and this might be one level too high if South has a minimum hand.

If North does open 1NT, East is likely to pass, as the vulnerability does not suggest interfering over a strong NT with no shortness. In fact, holding an Ace as an entry, East will have some hope that the suit will run if N/S end up in NT. On the actual hand, N/S will indeed end up in NT but unfortunately, a lead will not work out well for the defense. Declarer can win and take a losing finesse, and now the defense will need to take their three tricks just to hold declarer to nine tricks. If South ends up declaring NT, West is likely to lead a , and the suit can be set up with only one loser. With the King offside, only eight tricks can be made by declarer. With so much depending on the opening lead, most of the matchpoints will be won or lost based on who declares NT and, in particular, on whether North chooses to open 1NT or not.
