N/S should play 6NT at most tables, often on the bidding shown. South doesn't quite have enough strength to invite a grand slam, but should just jump to the small slam in NT once a fit isn't found. What should East lead against 6NT? No lead is attractive, with the opponents bidding s, as a lead might give up a trick if North has AT, KT or QT and West has the Jack. As it happens any lead from East is safe. Declarer can cash their and suits, coming down to AK 954 in the North hand, and AK J95 in the South hand. This is an example of something known as a "criss-cross squeeze" and if either opponents has both the Queen and the length, they will be pickled, although declarer will have to work out which suit they have left unprotected. On the actual hand, if East pitches a on the fourth , they will in fact cause their partner to be squeezed. A better pitch by East is a , so that West knows that East cannot cover the suit. If East pitches a , West will have to guess what to do, but with the Jack in dummy should get it right. If South is the declarer in 6NT, however, it might be a little harder for West to work out the correct play if East pitches a . In any case, I don't expect the defense to err very often, and +990 should be a common N/S score.

With both pairs having a major suit fit and being able to make game in their major, the bidding will get competitive on this hand. After East and South each bid a major, they will each get raised by their partner, and then both are likely to bid game. Neither East nor South will be certain game can make, but with their 6-4 distributions, will know that game might well make opposite a minimum if their partners are well fitted in their side suit. East will have to decide whether to bid at the five level and N/S will have to decide whether to double or not. I can see both sides playing both doubled and undoubled at the five level. It's hard to see how either side will allow their opponents to play in their major at the four level, though it will happen occasionally.

Curiously, both major suit contracts require careful play from declarer to make the most tricks, and both have the potential for defensive errors. Let's take a contract first. If the defense cashes their three red suits at the start, then declarer will have to decide how to play the suit. First, declarer should recognize that East has the length and therefore is more likely to be short in s, so declarer should start the suit with the Ace. When East shows up with the Jack, should declarer play for the drop, or take a finesse against the Queen? Those who have heard the rule "Eight ever, Nine never" might be inclined to play for the drop but this is not correct. This is an example of a situation known as "Restricted Choice." You can read more about this online, but the basic idea is that if you are in a nine card fit off the QJ and an opponent plays the Queen or Jack on the first round, then it is about twice as likely to be singleton as to be part of a QJ doubleton holding. On the present hand, these odds are skewed even more by the fact that East is known to hold length, so finessing against the Queen is 100% the right play. The defense must also be careful to cash their winners against a contract. Let's say West leads a . If East wins the Queen and tries to cash the Ace, declarer will ruff, pull trump, discard a on the King, and now if they play s correctly will discard their other on the long and make 12 tricks.

Against a contract, the defense must also cash their side suit winners, and declarer must also handle their side suit carefully. On any lead, declarer will need to play the suit by getting to dummy with the Ace and leading small to the Queen. When South's Jack drops, declarer can return to dummy with the 8 and play the 10, bringing the suit in for no losers. If the defense hasn't cashed their black suit winners on the go (for example if South leads or switches to the Jack), then the suit will provide declarer with a pitch for one of their losers, and they will make 11 tricks. I expect making game contracts in both directions, with 11 tricks in either direction being good for a near top.

The East hand is too strong to open 1 and plan to jump in NT next. With a good five card suit, and a plethora of quick tricks, and even a supporting 10 for the K, the East hand looks better even than a minimal 2NT opening to me. Whatever East opens, E/W should end up in 3NT, usually declared by East. South will not have an easy choice of leads. If South leads a low , declarer should also play low, and if North plays the Queen, this makes it easy for declarer. Declarer will take a couple of finesses, and can eventually give up the King and lead towards the Jack to make 11 tricks. If instead, North plays the 7, declarer can win the 8 and take a finesse. When this holds, declarer will need to decide what to do next. It looks like declarer doesn't want North to lead a , so it isn't unreasonable to lead the 10 at this point, planning to duck it if it isn't covered. As it happens, this play will work out great for declarer. If North doesn't cover the 10, declarer will have five tricks and will end up with at least 11 tricks, and 12 tricks if they read the layout correctly. If instead declarer cashes one high , and notes South's play of the nine, and continues with a small one to the 10, 11 tricks can again be made. Just cashing the high s is likely to result in only making 10 tricks. On a red suit lead, it will be harder for declarer, though in theory 11 tricks can always be made.

It's not clear what the final contract will be on this hand, with much of the bidding driven by West's choice of opening bids. At first, the West hand looks like a normal 2 opening, holding 9 HCP and a good six card suit, especially given that E/W are vulnerable. However, even at this vulnerability, the West hand looks too strong to open 2, having good spot cards, excellent distribution and the possibility that either s or s might be a better contract. Opening a 9 HCP hand at the one level won't be to everyone's liking though, and there will be plenty of 2 openings. If West does open 2, I see little chance for E/W to get to game, and it will be up to South to decide whether to let 2 play, or reopen with a double, which should lead to N/S playing in 2 or 3. If West does open with 1, then South might regret getting into the bidding later. If the bidding goes as shown, and West bids a late 3, then East will know that West has a weakish 6-4 hand, but likely three s, given the opponents bidding, and thus a void. East can see that their hand should be a perfect fit for partner, and might work out to bid 4. I think this will be rare, but no other bidding sequence looks like to get E/W to game.

Assuming North leads a against a contract, declarer can win the Ace and lead another . The defense should also be able to work out that declarer likely has a void, and find the right defense of leading two rounds of trumps, but at many tables, South will try to cash a . This will allow declarer to ruff a , lead trump, and eventually have a guess to make 11 tricks. If the defense instead pulls two rounds of trump, declarer will be unable to avoid two losers, and will need a good guess to make 10 tricks. With so few pairs in game, +140, +170 and +200 will be common E/W scores. Against a contract, the defense will need to find ruffs to get the most tricks. If East leads a , then three ruffs are possible, and declarer will only make six tricks. Conversely, if the defense never leads s, declarer can make nine tricks, which will be a top if they are playing in a partial.
