East has a borderline opener. Some will pass this hand but we thing they should give serious thought to getting their side into the auction.

West is bidding on shape. She dies have her first bid however once partner shows spade support she comes alive because of her shape.

The bridge gods reward her boldness as she will make an overtrick on this layout. She will lose the A and one diamond. She may ruff one heart in dummy to establish the suit but that will be all she will have to do on this board.

Ed Antosz Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
   1♣
DblPass2♠Pass
4♠All pass

South will open and West will double. Her hand is too strong to overcall 1. Her expectation is to double and bid diamonds however once partner bids spades and shows more than a minimum she will bid the spade game. Some Wests may explore for slam hover they will stop in 5♠ once they learn of the missing heart controls. (With a useless heart doubleton West may start a cuebidding sequence. When neither partner shows a heart control the partnership will settle in 5♠.)

South will lead her top hearts. Declarer needs the spade finesse to make her contract. She will get to dummy with a club and take the finesse. She can ruff a diamond to dummy to repeat the finesse (in case spades break 3 - 1.) With the spade finesse working declarer can ruff her long diamonds in dummy to make 11 tricks.

South may have a very difficult second bid. For some partnerships this bid shows extra values, for others it shows a minimum opener. If it's the latter case in your partnership then South has an easy second bid. If your partnership understanding is that the bid shows extra values then South must bid 2 at her second turn.Regardless, the partnership will end in 3NT.

West will lead a spade and the race is on. EW have four spades coming to them once the ♠A is dislodged. South may holdup for one round or two but in the end her decision is how to make nine tricks without allowing EW to take their spades.

This means that South must try the club finesse. Fortunately for her side the finesse works and she will have seven club tricks She'll also have one spade and two hearts and will come to 10 tricks.

NS have a civil auction and get to the notrump game.

West will lead a heart. As with the previous board declarer must take her tricks without allowing the defense to gain the lead.

We expect at most tables that South will win nine tricks. She will get three spades, one heart and five cubs.

South has a play for a fourth spade however we don't expect many to try. She must win the ♠A, \♠K and then take the spade finesse. She notes the drop of the ♠9 from the East hand however the question is whether East holds ♠94 or ♠J94. There is no reasonable way for declarer to know. If anything with West having long hearts the first suspicion is that East may hold three spades rather than two.

Pass2NTPassBID

A few boards back we'd asked the question of what a 2NT bid means. On That board we'd treated it as though it did not show extras so on this board we'll treat it the same way. (Note that the NS partnership will has two boards this evening where they will have to deal with this question twice. Their side will have an easy time of it only once.)

South will bid hearts. The reverse shows extra values and once North bids notrump South knows her side is close to the slam zone. She must decide whether to settle for 3NT or explore for slam.

There are several roads to 12 tricks.

The easy one is to try the spade finesse, losing to East. On the play of the spade suit declarer notes the fall of the ♠9 from the West hand and can finesse East for the ♠10. The more elegant play is teh double squeeze.(Note that if East leads a spade declarer can play her for four spades, making the finesse an easier proposition.

The more interesting line is for declarer to win the opening lead. (Let's assume it's not a spade.) She must try both the spade and diamond finesses. We can see that the diamond finesse will work but not the spade finesse. Declarer can take her good spades and diamonds. West must find four discards. East on the run of the spades and diamond must find two discards.

WE can see the difficulty each will have. West must guard the heart suit and East must guard the spade suit. If each does that then no can guard clubs.

To time the squeeze south should cash her two top clubs before running her diamonds. On the last diamond she can discard a spade unless East has discarded her spade. If West pitches her clubs the third club in the North hand will be a good trick, else South's third heart will be good.

EW have a simple auction to get to their heart game. East's second bid isn't really an overbid as she has no idea about the value of her ♠K.

South will likely lead the ♣K. On this lead declarer will succeed if she plays the A and a second heart as the defense will not be able to score a club ruff. If she divines that North holds a singleton club she may make that play in an effort to assure her contract. We expect that at most tables East will have to consider North holding a doubleton club. If the heart finesse loses to South then South can cash a high club and give her partner a ruff. We think that this will influence many declarers into cashing the A and continuing a heart.

If South's opening lead is her singleton diamond then the defense will prevail and South will score a diamond ruff. North will have to cooperate on defense and tell her partner how to reach her hand. On the opening diamond lead North should play her 10 telling partner that she has a spade entry.

When South wins the K she will play a spade to North who in turn will give South a diamond ruff.

Some north players will bid 1 at their first turn. Regardless the partnership will get to the notrump game played by South.

West will lead the ♠Q. Declarer will duck and win the spade continuation. (Note that West should play the ♠J at Trick 2 to smother the ♠10 in dummy.) South will win and unblock the KQ. She needs an entry to dummy and the only promising suit is clubs. So South will play a club to the ♣10 in dummy. This will get her to dummy to cash the A and establish the club suit at the same time.

South will come to nine tricks with two spades, three diamonds and four clubs.

System will get EW to high however at most tables they will prevail and make nine tricks in spades. West will balance with a double. Her hand is too strong to bid 1NT as most pairs play that a balancing 1NT shows 11 - 14 HCPs. East with more the eight HCPs will bid 2♠. West with her extra values will invite game but East will decline the invitation.

From the auction West knows that South holds very little in HCPs as she did not respond to North's opening bid. She can place most of the missing high cards in the North hand.

North's opening lead will be a heart or a club. We expect most will lead a club. Declarer will win, play the ♠A and play a spade toward dummy. North will win her king. (Declare wants to hide her intention of ruffing a heart so she doesn't cash those cards immediately.)

West will win the return. She now cashes her high hearts, plays a club to the board and draws the outstanding trump. She can ruff a heart. This will give her nine tricks.

Look at what happens if West cashes her high hearts early. When North wins the ♠K she knows that the only suit left to play is diamonds. If she leads a low diamond, South will win her king to continue the suit. North will take two more diamonds and play her fourth diamond. South will now score her ♠10 either immediately or later should declarer ruff with the ♠Q in dummy. THis line becomes automatic is declarer points the way for the defense.

East will open 1NT even though she has six diamonds. Had she opened 1NT she rebid would be 3 and we think most are more comfortable with the notrump opening. She will end in the notrump game.

South will lead a heart. The suit has better texture than clubs and it is an unbid major.

Declarer is under pressure to cash her nine winners least she go down if the defense regains the lead. So East will take her nine tricks.

South has some serious thinking to do before she bids. She knows her side has 30 - 31 HCPs. They are a little shy of the slam zone however she does have a five card suit which frequently proves to be a source of tricks.

East will lead a spade. Declarer will play low from dummy and win her ♠9. She will likely play another spade to get herself three spade tricks. At this point East must play a heart leasst declarer score 12 tricks. The heart play will hold North to 11.

At the table we expect North to win 11 tricks. She will win the lead as soon as possible to play her ♠A and then try the spade finesse which works however East has a spade trick. North will discover the diamond situation when East shows out and she can get to dummy to lead a diamond toward her hand finessing the queen. She will be able to repeat this play. She will lose one spade and one club.

This is the third hand which North has opened 2NT that we are discussing. She's had good results on the previous ones and this board is not an exception.

East will likely win a spade. Unfortunately for her side this will allow North to win 11 tricks. She will win the spade opening and immediately dislodge the club ace. West will win and continue spades. At this point declarer must lose a second trick either as a spade or a diamond.
