Any of the four hands might end up being the first to bid on this board, but it will also be true that the board will be passed out at some tables. The North hand will be opened by pairs who open all 11 point hands, but it really is an ugly hand even for opening light, with no defense and no five card suit. The East hand is also just a little light for most to open. Despite holding the fewest HCP at the table, the South hand looks like a reasonable third seat, non vulnerable opening bid to me, with two four card majors. South will, of course, be planning to pass if North bids a four card major and the opponents are not in the bidding. Over South's 1 bid, West will want to bid, given their 5-5 distribution, but the suit is poor and most pairs will not be able to show both minors over a minor suit opening. If West overcalls 1, North can bid 1, much to East's surprise, so East will simply show a good raise in s. With South's weak hand, they might pass 2, but it seems wrong to not show their four card support. From this point, it's not clear how the bidding will proceed. East will certainly want to double N/S if they get too high in a contract, at 2, or even better if N/S get to 3.

Should North invite to game? Absent any opposition bidding, this would be reasonable, but on the bidding shown, North should know to be cautious. Even if West has a minimal 8 HCP for their overcall, and East has a minimum of 10 HCP to show their limit raise, this only leaves 11 HCP for South. So, a little math will let North know that game is highly unlikely. Even if South has a distributional hand, North has too many scattered values, and not enough controls in the red suits. All of this suggests not bidding 3 as the North player. East might not have a clear double of 2, and West might not pass a double, but certainly if N/S get to 3, this should get doubled. If E/W compete to 3, North will want to get into the doubling game themselves. However, showcasing just how poor the North HCP are for defense, 3 can't be beaten. At most the defense will take either three tricks and one trick, or two tricks in each minor. Against a contract, the defense should be able to score two tricks in each major and one trick in each minor.

E/W should end up in 3NT at most tables. In fact, for some pairs, the East hand will be a 3NT opening bid, if E/W play "Gambling 3NT" and allow an outside Ace or King. The East hand would prefer to have the Jack, as the suit won't be likely to run opposite a singleton, so I expect that most will be opening 1. The East hand doesn't have quite enough points to bid 3, despite holding a nice source of tricks, but once West invites to game, East should have an easy 3NT bid. Most of the matchpoints will be determined by how many tricks the defense cashes on opening lead. If North leads a , South can win and will have to decide what to do next. Returning a looks normal, as North could easily have started with KJxxx. At first it looks like it might be safe to lead the Ace, planning to switch back to s if North discourages, but what if declarer's hand is QJxx KQ xx KQxxx? Now, declarer has only eight top tricks if South continues s, but will have 10 tricks if South cashes the Ace. Assuming South continues s, declarer will have 11 top tricks, and on the run of the suit, South will have to give up their Ace in order to keep four s, or else declarer will end up with 12 tricks. North will have plenty of chances to signal encouragement in s and/or discouragement in s, and West will have usually shown a four card suit, so in theory, it shouldn't be hard for North to get the defense right, but there will certainly be some +490 scores for E/W. If North leads a to start with, the defense can cash three tricks, but then North will need to switch to s, aided by South's discard on the third . Overall, holding E/W to nine tricks should be well above average for N/S.

E/W should be playing 4 at most tables. After West opens 1 and East bids 1NT, most players will choose to rebid 3. Some experts play that a jump to 3NT over a forcing 1NT shows a hand with 18-19 HCP, a six card major suit and no shortness. With such prime values, the West hand is worth this if the bid is available. If using this agreement, a 2NT bid is used to show a hand with 18-19 HCP and only a five card major. With soft honors in all three other suits and a honor to help the suit run, East might elect to pass 3NT if West offers a choice of games. If E/W do play 3NT, a lead will hold them to nine tricks, but if South is on lead more tricks might be available on a minor suit lead. Against 4, declarer has an unavoidable loser in trump and will most likely lose two tricks. Double dummy, declarer can make 11 tricks in s on the actual layout, but in practice, the sequence of plays required to do so will never happen, and +620 should be by far the most common score for E/W.

Most E/W pairs will end up in 4 which will not be the best contract given the layout of the N/S cards. One possibility is that East decides not to show their four card suit, given their good stoppers in the other suits and 4333 distribution. If East does choose to play 3NT, it will turn out to be worth a lot of matchpoints, and 3NT will make most of the time. Against 3NT, let's say that South leads a . Declarer can win and continue the suit twice more, which will already put North under some discarding pressure. If South wins the Ace and continues the suit, declarer will have an easy time getting to nine tricks. If South instead exits a , it will get trickier for declarer, but careful play will still see declarer home. In the more likely 4 contract, it is hard to see how declarer can avoid losing at least three tricks and the Ace and the King. North might be tempted to double 4, but this would be speculative, as West might still have more than a minimum hand, and a double might well help declarer play the hand. I expect a lot of -200 scores for E/W, and any who manage to make 3NT should have a near top.
