Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
 Pass1NTAll pass

East seems likely to open 1NT and play there at most tables. South has a decent hand, and if their suits were in the majors, might consider bidding, but few if any pairs will be able to show a minor oriented hand and play at the two level, and any bid by South might be disastrous if West has a good hand. Assuming South passes and ends up on lead against 1NT, most of the matchpoints will ride on the defense's ability to signal well. South will lead a at most tables. North will take the King and is likely to continue the suit. Against 1NT, it's always important to think beyond running just one suit, but in this case, North has no particular reason to switch, although some will consider switching to a . Assuming North does continue s, South will run the suit and North will have to make three discards. If North discourages both majors, South will get the idea that it is ok to lead s, and the defense can take the first eight tricks, nine if declarer mistakenly pitches away dummy's clubs. Declarer will have pitching problems of their own and not knowing about the King being singleton, might come down to four s and the Ace. If North has kept four s, declarer will lose a ninth trick in the end.

In theory, the defense can run the first nine tricks if South leads a initially. In practice the defense might not be as easy as described above. For example, let's say that North pitches a and two s, declarer pitches two s, and South gets worried about underleading their honors and leads a instead. Declarer can run four tricks and if North pitches another , not wanting to stiff their King, declarer can cash the Ace and end up with eight tricks!!! This won't be a common result, but there will certainly be pairs who don't beat 1NT when South doesn't lead a after running the suit. All in all, +100 should be a decent score for N/S and those who manage +150 will do very well indeed.

3Pass3NTAll pass

East will have the most important decision to make on this hand, assuming that West opens 3 and North passes. Of course, not ever West will open 3. Both East and South will open their hands at some tables that use light opening bids, but most players will pass. West has a poor suit and poor distribution, but at this vulnerability and with two passes in front of him, it looks right to open 3 anyway. North is just a little too light to bid, but is close to a double. The vulnerability is worrisome though, as is the lack of a fifth and the poor doubleton in s. The only redeeming quality of the North hand is that there are no honors wasted in the suit. So, assuming North passes, East will be on the spot.

North has a very difficult hand to bid using standard bidding methods after South opens 1. Most pairs will have no option but to bid 1, and then will hear the dreaded 2 rebid by South. As North can't bid 2 naturally now if N/S are using 4th suit forcing, some North's will be forced to rebid 2 and might end up playing there. However, many experts have a nifty bidding gadget, known as "Reverse Flannery" for dealing with this type of bidding problem, and this is a good hand to illustrate how powerful it can be.

West will face the first decision on this hand, whether to open 1 or 1. Experts are mixed on what to open when holding four s and five s.
