All pass

6 is an excellent contract, needing only a 3-1 split in s, or a 4-0 split with East having four s and at least three s. Alas, it is not to be on this hand. Some pairs will open 2 with the East hand, despite the poor suit quality and the vulnerability. South has an easy double, and if North passes, East will regret their opening. N/S have four top tricks against 2 and should have no difficulties scoring four trump tricks, so +800 will be an easy result for N/S if they double 2. Alternately, N/S might end up playing in NT at some level if North decides to not pass South's double. If East takes a more sensible approach and passes initially, then South has a dilemma. What should they open? Many players will open 1 without thinking too much about their rebid, but what will South bid next if North bids 1 or 1NT? South has the values to make a "reverse" bid by rebidding 2, but that would be a poor bid with South's two suits being such poor quality, and 9 HCP in their short suits. Rebidding 2 on a poor five card suit is also not appealing. For many experts, the solution on hands like this is to just open 1NT, particularly if their singleton is an honor. It's not a perfect solution, but I think you would find a lot of experts opening the South hand with 1NT. Just don't ask what to open if the J was a small card and the J was the Q instead. If South does open 1NT, North will look for a fit, and then either sign off in 3NT, or make a slam invitational bid of 4NT. Should South move onto slam over an invitation? With 16 HCP and a five card suit and good controls, it looks like South should. Many experts play that over a 4NT invitation, that five of a minor shows a four card suit and six of a minor shows a five card suit. North has at most four s and three s, so the only danger for South is that North's distribution is 4342, in which case slam is likely going to be a poor proposition. It's certainly not unreasonable to just pass 4NT.

How will South fair in each contract? Double dummy, 6 can make, but only by way of a Dummy Reversal , and playing West for all four trump, so 6 is almost certain to go down unless West plays a foolish 9 when declarer starts on trump. A NT contract will depend very much on who declares and the opening lead. Assume first that East has opened 2 and North is declaring NT. East will likely lead a or a . In either case, declarer will need to decide how to play the suit. Most players will start with the Ace or Queen, allowing for a finesse against the Jack if East has four of them. However, a careful examination of the spot cards should make it clear that a 4-0 split in the West hand can be managed if you start with the King. Since East has shown length in s, declarer should play for West to have length in s. If they do, 12 tricks can be made with careful play. If South declares NT, West will start with a high , and now declarer will likely get s wrong and may struggle to make more than nine tricks.

E/W have the point count to end up in 3NT, which will be the final contract at many tables. However, the E/W hands do not fit well, and even after the defense runs the first five tricks, declarer will not be able to take the remaining tricks. West has a normal 1NT opening, and with 9 HCP, a five card suit and another potential source of tricks in s, it will be hard for East not to just bid game. If East does just invite by bidding 2NT, West will pass, and E/W will end up with a much better result. Assuming North leads a , the defense will run the first five tricks. Declarer can pitch three s from dummy, but will be unable to manufacture an eighth trick and will end up down two. If North decides to lead a for some reason, declarer will continue the suit, and if North still doesn't lead their suit, declarer will end up with 10 tricks and a clear top. However, I think this an unlikely result, and -100 will be a common score for E/W. Any E/W pair who manages to go -50 should be well above average, and if E/W somehow play just 1NT, this will be an even better result. If North decides to interfere by bidding 2, E/W can profitably double this for another excellent score, as North will be down at least two.

N/S will do well if they can keep the final contract low on this hand. East will open 1 and South should overcall 1. The South hand is actually pretty ugly for a 14 HCP hand, with no shortness and a lot of "Swiss cheese" values. Looking at the favorable vulnerability, West might preempt with 3, and North can do no better than to bid 3. Despite having better than a minimum raise, North has no room to show a better hand. Some pairs might use 3 on this auction to show a limit raise. If so, or if West passes and North is able to bid 2, South will have to decide whether to bid game. The point count is about right opposite a limit raise, but again, the South hand is so ragged that going low looks like it might be best. As it happens, the East hand has full opening values, despite the vulnerability, and thus both the Ace and the Queen are onside. However, even with that good news, the spot cards in the suit are such that East is guaranteed a trump trick, and South can make no more than nine tricks. Notice what this suggests about the strength of the South hand. If East had passed, then game would be much worse, requiring the opponents to have no ruff, and for declarer to avoid both two losers and one trump loser. It should be clear that the South hand should not be accepting a game invite by North, even if N/S were bidding with no interference. All of the matchpoints will depend on whether N/S are playing 4 and going down, or playing 3 and making. E/W can only make seven tricks in a contract, but it's hard to see how N/S can double 3 if West bids it.

5All pass

Getting to five a minor is rarely easy, and with South likely preempting in s, N/S will do quite well if 5 is the final contract. East will open 1 and South will have to decide what to do with their hand. As North is a passed hand, it's more likely that South will want to preempt. South might be a little worried, since North could have as little as a five card to the Queen and the Ace, and 4 will make. The Queen and two Aces might allow 5 to make. If North were unpassed, 2 might be a better bid with the South hand. Whatever South chooses, West will either double, hoping to bring s into the picture, or cue bid to show a good hand in support of s. Doubling is a little risky, as East might pass holding 54 in the minors, but on the actual hand, either bid will work out. The key will be for West to drive to the game. With a big fit and shortness in s, West should see that a game is a good possibility even opposite a minimum opener.

At first it looks like South's preempt may steer declarer to go wrong, as declarer would like to play the suit by leading the Queen and finessing twice through the North hand. However, declarer can do better. Let's say that South starts with a high and then switches to a trump. Declarer can win and ruff a , then pull exactly one more round of trump with the West hand. When South shows out, declarer should lead the Queen, finessing in the suit. After cashing all four tricks, pitching a , declarer can pull North's last trump and lead the Queen into the South hand. South will be forced to either lead back into declarer's holding, or give declarer a ruff/sluff. As it happens, if declarer is sloppy and pulls both rounds of trump before taking the finesse, they will still survive, as they will be forced to lead s from their hand, and they can't go wrong in the suit at that point, as South has both of the honors. As I expect that many will not get to game, +600 should be an above average score for E/W.
