Fine, the plays not the ting on this board but we needed to come up with a title.

Our afternoon starts with a boring board. It's boring in that everyone should bid the spade game and each declarer will lose two aces.

Some Easts may compete however they will not deter NS from finding their best spot.

We don't expect too many to find the slam however if South is imaginative we can see her having visions of the slam succeeding.

North will initiate a Game Force on her second bid and opt for the spade game when she learns that South has six spades and four hearts. South knows her partner has a diamond suit and needs very little to come to 12 tricks. She checks for aces and learns her partner has two. (An interesting aside is that regardless which flavor of Blackwood you may use, be it Keycard 1430 , 0314 or Blackwood, the 5 response always shows two.) She opts for the slam.

South has to do some card reading in the spade suit to make her contract.

She must hold her losers to one trick in that suit. She can get to dummy with a heart to lead a spade toward her hand. East will rise with a spade honor.

South will likely win.She would like to get to dummy to lead another spade toward her hand however that will generate a lot of tension as the board unwinds. South will cash her ♣Q to play a diamond to dummy. She can cash dummy's high clubs discarding a diamond and a heart.

When she leads a spade East will play her second honor. That will be the defense's only trick.

This will likely not be a pretty board for EW. East will open, West will show her spades and then her hearts showing 5 - 4 in the majors. Everyone knows that it is preferable to play a 4 - 4 trump fit rather than a 5 - 3 so we expect most EW pairs to end in 4. It North doubles the partnership will escape to 4♠. However we think North should remain silent and take her profit.

North will lead a club and the defense will begin their assault on the suit. East can ruff clubs however she will be doing so with her higher hearts. Each time she ruffs North will be gaining a trump trick. The defense should win one club and four hearts.

East open and shows a huge hand. West does all she can to stop however once East shows spades she does have four card support for her partner and she will show it. East will bid the game.

East will lose the obvious three tricks. She must lose a spade, one heart and one diamond.

South will lead the K establishing one trick for the defense in that suit. It is interesting to note that declarer can eventually get to dummy with a spade. If she first plays the A, gets to dummy with a spade to lead the 10 North must not cover. If North does cover declarer will not lose a heart trick.

At first blush it appears that West has 12 tricks in her spade game however declarer has a lot of work to do on this board and North's ♠9 may grow to be a trick.

Look what happens on a heart lead. Declarer will win the ace in dummy and ruff a heart. She will play a diamond to dummy to ruff a second heart. She must now discard a heart on her good A however as soon as she goes about drawing trump, North will win her king and continue diamonds. Declarer can ruff in dummy but this will promote a trump winner for North.

Any variation of this line of play will produce the same result. The defense will come to a second trick as long as they don't make an error.

East's second bid may be a slight underbid however it accurately shows her hand. The alternative is for her to try 2NT.

Regardless the partnership will end in the notrump game.

We expect that West will scramble to nine tricks at most tables. She must guess how to play the diamonds but we expect her to get at least three diamonds. She will win at least one spade, more if the defense continues the suit. She will win at least one club trick. North is likely to lead a club and this will produce at least two tricks for declarer.

East uses Jacoby 2NT to show four card heart support and an opening hand. West jumps to game to shutdown the action.

Declarer will lose two aces unless the defense is careless.

North should lead a spade which South may not win choosing to save her ace to capture dummy's ♠K., On this board this will be an error as declarer will win the trick, draw trump and discard her other losing spade on dummy's good diamonds. She will make two overtricks.

The clue for South to take her ♠A is dummy's long sidesuit. South should be fearful that declarer can use the diamonds to discard losers form her hand. Upon winning the ♠A South must consider playing a club lest that trick escape as well.

Jacoby 2NT is a useful convention however it seldom arises. This afternoon we have two consecutive boards which will have a Jacoby 2NT auction. Both will end in 4.

If the defense starts spades declarer will make an overtrick. If East must play spades she will make her contract as she will lose two spades. She must also lose one diamond.

South will transfer to hearts after North opens a slightly offshape 2NT. South will offer the choice of games by bidding 3NT and North, with only tow hearts will elect to play the notrump game.

East will lead a spade, North will call for dummy's ♠Q. Declarer will immediately play on clubs.

on this layout she will win nine tricks, two spades, one heart, two diamonds and four clubs.

  1. Unusual VS Unusual showing a Limit Raise or better in spades

East will compete much to her partner's chagrin however West is warned off coming in with her heart suit. Regardless, NS will get to their spade game.

The interference gives North some information about East's distribution. North knows that East is 5 - 5 in the minors and when East does not lead a heart North suspects she is void and therefore must have three spades.

East is likely to lead a spade or a diamond. (We don't usually lead an unsupported ace.) Declarer will win, draw trump in three rounds and take the diamond finesse. She will be able to repeat the finesse and although she will not establish the suit she will win four diamond tricks and she can discard two losing hearts on the diamonds.

The coup de grace will come when declarer calls for the last diamond from dummy discarding a club from her hand. East will be endplayed and must lead a club to declarer.

North will show a Limit Raise of hearts according to her partnership's methods. South must decide upon the value of her K. The card has no value unless North holds an adjacent diamond honor. in the end we think that the wasted values of that card and the poor heart suit will deter South and keep her from accepting the invitation to game..

West will lead the Q denying the king. East will win her ace on the first trick and return the suit. (East must be patient and ot play a spade as she will give away a trick if she does.)

We expect most declarers to try the heart finesse. East will drop the 10 when South cashes the ace. South will suspect that hearts may be breaking 4 - 1. If that's her thinking then cashing the K next will result in the loss of two heart tricks. So even with the 10 dropping we think declarer will take the heart finesse.

At the end of the afternoon, declarer will lose four tricks. (In playing the clubs she will lose the club finesse however the 3 - 3 split makes a winner of her fourth club.)

Many pairs play Inverted Minors so North does not have the option of bidding 2 at her first turn. If that bid is available then South will be declarer in 3NT.

East will lead a heart and North thinks she must guess whether to rise with dummy♠ K or let the lead runaround to her jack.

On this layout she cannot misguess as East holds both the ace and queen. She will have nine tricks, one heart, four diamonds and four clubs.

East will get to the heart game after she hears her partner support her suit.

Some South players may interject a diamond overcall however this information will help East in the play of the board.

South will lead a spade as she doesn't want to test one of the suits headed by her unsupported aces. Declarer will win and go about the business of drawing trump. When she leads a high club from her hand to dislodge the ♣A South will win and should consider cashing the A.

From her auction she knows that East holds 18 - 19 HCPs which means that her partner holds nothing in honors. Seeing the long club suit in dummy she should envision that declarer has a parking spot for any losing diamonds she might have.

At the table we expect most declarers to win 11 or 12 tricks in their heart game.

Dummy has a dearth of entries so upon winning the opening lead she will likely cash two high clubs and ruff a club in dummy. She will now play a heart to her hand and a heart to dummy. West will show out so declarer will take the heart finesse.

She will play a diamond to the ace and try the diamond finesse which works. She will establish the diamond suit however she will not have an entry to dummy.

The magic line however is to win the opening lead, cash two clubs to ruff a club and immediately take the diamond finesse. Now she cashes the A and plays a heart to dummy learning of the heart split. She now takes the heart finesse, draws the remaining trump and cashes the high diamonds ending in dummy to enjoy the long diamonds.

While this line is not particularly difficult we don;t expect many to find it.
