Our afternoon starts with a board which will not be fun for declarer. South will open in third seat West will remain silent. North has some values but no support so she will reluctantly try 1NT and play there.

East may lead a heart which is a huge help for declarer. The opening lead establishes two heart tricks for declarer. She has the spots to force two more heart tricks by knocking out the 10 however she has no entries to her hand.

.So upon winning the first heart North will place the ♠Q on the table. East should play low. Declarer will likely try a diamond to get to dummy. If she guesses to finesse against the jack in the East hand she will have two entries to dummy in the suit. More importantly she will ahve three diamond tricks.

North may make eight tricks. She may win two spades, two hearts, three diamonds and eventually a club.

West should open her hand. She has a long suit and values in hearts. East will bid spades and later jump to the heart game. Neither partner has any interest in slam.

North may lead the Q. Declarer will win her ace, draw trump and play on spades.

She can discard one club loser on dummy's good spades. She can ruff one club and of course she has the ♣A. In the end she will lose a club trick.

Everyone should make 11 tricks in the heart game.

It's often good to lead an unbid major against a notrump contract. North will probably lead a heart to start the defense.

West 8 is a huge card as it has the potential of being a second heart trick.

Regardless declarer will win a heart as quickly as possible and cash five diamond tricks. She can later cone to the ♣A and take the club finesse.giving her nine tricks.

She can exit dummy with a spade. She will likely win a spade as an overtrick.

East's hand is too good to pass so she will open 1. West knows her side will be in the heart game however she must temporize by bidding 2♣. She should have a fifth club however bridge is not always a perfect game.

East will rebid her hearts as she is not strong enough to show her spades. West will bid the heart game.

Declarer will easily come to 10 tricks. She must lose the two black aces and one heart. South will wither ruff a club of she will win her heart naturally. Holding three to the queen behind the ace - king is always a trick.

The result of the auction on this board is a function of East's choice of opening bid. If she opens 1♣ the auction may go as in the diagram above. Some East's may opt to open an offshape 1NT. In that case West will transfer to hearts and pass. The partnership will be in 2 making several overtricks.

Playing in 4 declarer will lose the obvious tricks. She must lose the A and the A. She can ruff a spade in dummy and should do so prior to drawing trump. She has the diamond spots so that only the ace is missing in that suit.

South may be a touch strong for her two bid however we think most will open the South hand. Some Souths will try 1♠.

North will bid the spade game.

West will lead the K whihc declarer will win in dummy. She will cash the ♠A and try the spade finesse which works. She can cash five club tricks discarding losers from her hand. She will have 13 tricks.

East is most likely to come to 10 tricks on this board. There are several lines which will get her there. Her choice of play hinges on South's opening lead.

If South lead s a club and declarer guesses to play the ♣10 from dummy she will have three club tricks. She can play on spades or diamonds. As she is in dummy we think she will call for the ♠J and take the finesse which loses however this establishes four spade tricks.

East has four spades, three diamonds and three clubs. It appears she can cash her winners ending in dummy to lead a heart toward her hand. North however will rise with the A and cash her winning diamond.

We've had several difficult boards this evening. This is yet another one.

EW have the values to be on game and will get there. Unfortunately the bridge gods mitigate against them and they will not make their game. East will open, West will invite and East holding a max for her opening bid will accept.

South will lead a heart. Regardless how declarer plays the defense will win three heart tricks. They also have tow spades and will win either a club or a diamond depending upon how declarer chooses to play.

Earlier this afternoon we had this same auction with the same result.

On a diamond lead, West can win the second round of diamonds and ruff a diamond in dummy with the 6. On this line she loses one diamond and one club to make 11 tricks.

On an opening heart or club lead declarer will win however she has a more difficult line to 11 tricks. She must win the heart in dummy to ruff a spade. She can draw trump and play a club to dummy to ruff a second spade. She continues with another club to dummy to ruff a third spade. Now when she plays a third round of clubs South will win but must allow declarer to get to dummy with a diamond to enjoy the good clubs.

If South takes the ♣A prior to the third round of the suit declarer can use a club to get to dummy.

We've had a number of boards this afternoon where there is little to the play in that declarer has her tricks and it's all over. And this is another in that series.

East will open and the partnership will get to the notrump game.

North's opening lead will be a little heart and the defense will have found one suit which they can establish. Declarer will win the third round of hearts and cash out her nine tricks. She does not have a play for an overtrick.

We think many will bid the notrump slam and all who do will unfortunately go down as the slam has no play.

South will lead a heart. (Note that a diamond lead by South will allow declarer to make 12 tricks.) Declarer will win and immediately attack spades. On this layout she will come to two spade tricks.

Eventually she will have to try the diamond finesse. There are no squeeze possibilities on this layout and only a successful diamond finesse will allow declarer to make her contract.

The bridge gods mitigate against declarer this afternoon and East will go down.

South sees no future in any of her suits against the notrump game. So we expect her to lead an unbid major to start the defense.

If she leads a heart declarer should come to 10 tricks. On the heart lead East can win the trick to attack clubs. Declarer will lead a club from her hand and duck the trick to North. She will win the return and cash the high clubs to win four club tricks. She also had four diamonds and two hearts.

North has an interesting play if South's opening lead is a spade. North can win the trick with either the ace or the queen and then exit a low spade to keep communication with South. Now when declarer relinquishes the lead the defense can cash three heart tricks to prevent declarer from scoring an overtrick.

North may find that play with a little consideration to the spade situation. If she concludes that South started with three spades then it is easier for North ti find the play.

Who needs points to win tricks? Certainly not West on this board.

North will win a heart against the spade partial. Declarer will win and play a club to dummy. She will play a spade and take the finesse. If she leads a diamond toward dummy North should consider hopping up with her ace especially seeing the diamond length in dummy.

The defense will win the tree obvious tricks.
