3 is a tad of an overbid, but the distribution an likely dispersion of honors (NS likely to have many diamond honors wasted for defense of a heart contract, and East, although weak, likely has useful cards.

In any event, it is the hustle-bustle of matchpoints that justify heavy competition, and West is rewarded for showing enterprise.

Who can predict an auction on a freak hand? Not I, nor anyone else, for there will not be anything like a uniform auction patter with 6-6 hands (East) opposed by 3181 and 8122 hands.

Should North-South sacrifice in 6? Probably so, on this auction, but what if South were to bid 3 instead of 2? Then the preemptive nature of the South hand would suggest a sacrifice to North

To make twelve tricks in diamonds after a trump lead, declarer must win in dummy and take a club finesse, then ruff out some clubs, stripping South of that suit, then draw trumps and lead a spade toward the AJxxx. If South splits, duck, then later run the spade suit. If south does not split, win the jack, losing only one trick -- an unruffed club.

If East bids a major in response to Stayman, West's hand is worth game. If East bids 2, denying a major fit, West will go low, using the partnerships methods to show a major without game interest.

Here, East's bidding spades is a home run in West's view.

Whether playing 1NT or 2, the result should be plus 90 NS, but there will be variances. In general, declarer should play on clubs in either contract, playing hearts toward the KQxx along the way, adding tricks if the defense either ducks the A or fails to shift to diamonds after taking it.

North fishes for spade support with 4th suit forcing 3, and South figures that AK is as good or better than any old xxx -- better, in fact!

North's only weakness is in opener's second suit, so issues a control bid, 4, to fetch a return control, 4. That suit having been securely placed in the controlled suit category, North was finally and only now justified position to ask about key cards with 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood .

South showed zero or three, and it would be perfectly fine technique for North to bid 5, for South is not allowed to pass with "three," only with "zero," but let's get serious. South has to have three, not zero, so the slam can be bid. Bidding 5 would be just to keep the system well-oiled.

When spades break and the K is onside (look at those magnificent diamond spots!), the small slam is assured. How do you make all thirteen, as the diagram suggests? Add to the above ingredients the establishment of the heart suit. On, say, a trump lead, win, play a heart, draw another trump, ruff a heart, draw the last trump, play a diamond to the eight, ruff a heart. Repeat the diamond finesse and ruff another heart. In all, you need four entries to dummy to establish and then cash the fifth heart. One spade and three diamonds will be just barely sufficient.
