Our afternoon starts with an exciting board. Sort of!!

South will preempt in third seat and get to play there.

Interestingly, East can ruff diamonds however she will be doing so with natural spade winners.

Declarer will scramble and come to eight tricks. West must guess what to lead. A spade doesn't seem right. Nor does a diamond lead appeal so we expect West to lead a heart or a club. Neither helps the defense nor dies it hurt. Declarer will win, discarding a diamond from her hand if West had chosen a club.

Declarer will come to her hand and table a high spade, East winning the trick. East will switch to a diamond and get a ruff. Declarer is in control from this point forward. South will play spades at every turn The defense will win four spades and one diamond. Declarer will make her contract.

EW have a laborious auction to get to the heart game. West takes two bids to show her hand and East will transfer to hearts and then give her partner a choice of games. Since West holds three hearts she will opt for the heart game.

The defense is powerless on this board. They will win one heart regardless how declarer plays the suit and North will win her K.

Declarer has the remaining 11 tricks. There is no opportunity to win more tricks for declarer nor can the defense do any better.

East has a difficult second bid. She can try 3, in which case her partnership will get to the diamond game. She might bid 5♣, also getting her side to a minor suit game. however some East players will be tempted to try 3NT.

The game is matchpoints and 3NT usually scores better than five of a minor. However that is not the case on this board. If East settles into 3NT South will lead a heart. North will rise with her ace and return the suit. The defense will win the first six tricks.

If EW are in 5 or 5♣ they will make their contract. As declarer must lose one heart and one club. Declarer can ruff a heart in the East hand for her eleventh trick. She will win one spade, one heart ruff, four diamonds and five clubs.

North gets bid surprise when she sees dummy. She was expecting to find two hearts in dummy. The good news is that South's singleton heart is a high honor.

North must play carefully however she should come to 10 tricks. East will lead a diamond which West will win to continue the suit. North has several options. Interestingly enough her best play is to discard a spade from her hand. East will win a diamond however declarer can discard her second spade loser on dummy's good Q. She can play the heart suit to lose only one trick. She will cash dummy's K, come to her hand to cash the A followed by the J. Fortunately for her the 10 falls doubleton making her 9 a winner.

If declarer ruffs the second round of diamonds she will fail in her contract as she cannot establish either spades nor clubs. The defense will continue diamonds and run her out of trump. East will eventually win two hearts on this line of play.

EW should get to the spade game. North will lead a high diamond, the defense's only trick. declarer will cash her high spades, dropping the queen doubleton. She will get to dummy to try the club finesse. since this works declarer will have 12 tricks.

Some West players will open 1 and rebid diamonds. They too will get to the spade game as East will blast once she hears her partner bid both red suits.

South is not comfortable deciding what to lead. West bid both red suits so it may not help the defense to lead either of them.. A trump lead doesn't look appetizing nor does a club. South must decide and we think that she will eventually lead a diamond. North will take her ace. Since South led a low diamond North should conclude that she had three and therefore declarer has a singleton diamond. north should shift to a club. On this line the defense will get two tricks.

If North continues the suit declarer will ruff, draw trump and cash six hearts discarding her clubs. On this line declarer will win 12 tricks.

If South's opening lead is a spade or a club declarer can win 12 tricks following this line.

Some Easts will invite the notrump game however with a five card sidesuit we like bidding the game. Regardless, EW will end in the notrump game.

North will lead a spade. Declarer will have at least two spade tricks. West must work on diamonds and clubs. If she had inserted the ♠10 at the first trick she will be in dummy and she will start her assault on the club suit. She will take the finesse which will lose to North however she will have established the suit for three tricks.

Better still is the fact that North does not have a comfortable exit. Perhaps North will exit a club, Declarer will win in hand and lead a diamond toward dummy. On this layout declarer cannot misplay the diamonds and will win five diamond tricks. She has three clubs, two spades and can force a heart trick coming to a total of 11 tricks.

We think that at most tables East will win the auction in 3 half the time while North will compete to 4♣ as she has heart shortness and spade winners.

Interestingly most who bid the club partial will be successful and make their contract. East will lead a heart. To set 4♣ East must now underlead her K for partner to win and return a diamond. East can now give her partner a ruff in diamonds. That is an unlikely play at the table.

So North will win the continuation to draw trump. She will concede two diamond tricks and make her contract.

If East wins the auction in 3 she will make her contract as she has four obvious losers in spades and clubs. It appears that NS might negotiate a spade ruff however East can thwart this by ruffing the third round of spades with a high heart. East can draw trump and ruff diamond in dummy. She can discard her other diamond on dummy's high ♠Q.

The opening lead will determine the result of this board.

If South selects a spade North will ruff. She may cash her ♣A. Regardless she will switch to a diamond which South will win to return a second spade. North will ruff to take the setting trick.

On any other opening lead declarer will likely make her contract. There are several lines to consider but all are variations. Let's say South leads a club. North will take her ace. On the diamond switch South will take her ace. If she plays a spade for her partner to ruff, north will be trading tricks as she has a natural heart trick. Declarer will be able to draw trump and she has the remaining tricks in high cards. All other variations in play allow East to win 10 tricks and make her contract.

This will prove to be an unexciting board. NS will get to their spade game.

West will lead a high club and continue with her second honor. She will follow by giving her partner a club ruff.

The defense will rest.

If West does not continue clubs declarer may make an overtrick. She will win the continuation cash a high spade noting the fall of the ♠10. She can get to dummy with a red king and try the spade finesse. On this line she will lose two club tricks.

Many duplicate players open their 11 HCP hands however this is not one of them. East will open and show her hand. West will regret being aggressive, overbidding slightly in bidding the slam.

South must lead a club to breakup the endplay against North however that will not happen as most Souths will lead the 10.

If declarer can divine the position she can make 12 tricks, She must cash two spades, (taking the spade finesse,) two hearts and three diamonds. Now she leads a cub from dummy toward her jack.

North is pickled. If she ducks declarer will score her ♣J. If North splits her honors she will win the trick however she is endplayed and must return a club.

Partnerships who settle in 3NT will not have an exciting time however they will score better as we expect anyone in 6NT will fail.
