East should open 1NT despite the 4333 pattern and minimum range values for the bid. The alternative bid of 1 loses credibility because of the extremely poor suit quality.

South will want to compete against 1NT and will make the partnership's system bid showing a major-minor two suiter. If no such pattern description is available, then pass is the better choice! Balanced hands defend. Putting all of one's eggs into a moderate five card suit without significant distributional features is a losing tactic. So I will assume for the sake of this analysis that South's 2 bid shows hearts and a minor, giving a wider, hence safer landing area for NS.

West will bid diamonds, presumably using the Lebensohl convention (starting with 2NT) to show a hand with competitive, not game-forcing, values and a long (at least six card) suit. 2NT in lebensohl FORCES 3 by opener, after which responder passes, bids a new suit a) below the overcaller's suit as a signoff b) cue bids the opponent's suit as Stayman with a stopper, c) bids a new suit at the three level higher than the opponent's suit as invitational to game in that suit, or d) bids 3NT to show a stopper in the opponent's suit with game forcing values. Playing lebensohl, a direct jump to 3NT following the overcall shows game points, but denies a major suit or a stopper in the overcalled suit. 3 directly, rather than using the 2NT relay, would be game forcing.

East, having heard about West's hand and the NS fit, should complete the auction by bidding 4 in the known ten-card fit. If any excuse or principle is needed to do so, pull out the LAW of Total Tricks to justify the bid.

  1. Support double, showing three spades
  2. Rosenkranz redouble, showing the A or K of clubs!

When partner overcalls a suit, there are often opportunities to show a top honor in partner's suit by doubling or redoubling. Without going into a lot of theory, I do advocate the simplest of these honor-showing bids, and advocate your consideration of the idea. In particular, what is suggested is that your partnership agree what when the opening side makes a Negative Double of your side's overcall, a redouble by "ADVANCER" (the partner of the overcaller) shows specifically the ace or king of the overcalled suit. Nothing more to it than that. The idea is primarily to help the opening lead problem partner would otherwise face, but secondarily the bid can be helpful to competitive or constructive bidding as well. The bid does NOT promise support, and might be better used to show specifically Ax or Kx, so that partner can underlead the suit to the known honor and a ruff might be obtained in defense.

With real support it might be better to preempt or bid more constructively by cue bidding or the like.

On this deal, the Rosenkranz redouble helps north with his opening lead problem. Underlead the A to South's known K, and then South can lead a diamond back.

Easy auction, easy game. Now play it correctly. Assume what North plays the Q on opening lead. Win, perforce, and play a diamond. When it holds, play a spade to the ace and than another club. North will win and play another club, South having encouraged. West wins and should first cash the other top spade and then four more diamond winners. North, having the duty to protect all three of the other suits, will crumble into a thousand tiny pieces. the discards will tell all, and declarer will pick up the remaining tricks.

Be sure to cash that second spade before running the diamonds, or else the West hand will be squeezed before North. Cashing the second spade honor is a Vienna Coup.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
Pass12Dbl
33NTAll pass

3NT might technically be described as an overbid, but South will not accuse North of overbidding when 3NT makes! North is justified in his second bid by the fact that South's hand is not well defined, promising some playing values and probably four spades, but without a concrete point-count. Passing by North is a worse offense than relying on partner for values.

Whatever finesse North decides to take is destined for success, and after trying one (probably clubs first), then the second one will be icing on the cake. If West is not careful to preserve all of his spades, declarer might take an embarrassing number of tricks. Ten tricks are North's due, but eleven are there when West tosses a spade.

Why should West defend correctly? Well, for one simple reason, it is a well-known and established principle that a defender should retain parity with a long suit in dummy on the right. West can turn his head 45 degrees to the right and see a spade suit with four cards. Then the head turns left and downward and there are four spades also in hand. Save them!
