Both E/W and N/S are making a three level contract, but neither side has a completely straightforward auction to get there. South's 1 opening and West's 2 overcall are both normal, as is North's raise to 2. From here, things get a little more interesting. You might be surprised at the bidding suggestion to raise to 3 in the East hand. However, a two level overcall particularly in a minor should usually be on a six card suit, or on a very good five card suit. Thus, with honor doubleton, raising a minor suit overcall is not, in principle a bad idea. You might argue on this hand that East should be a little stronger for this action, given that West could be lighter than normal at this vulnerability, but the vulnerability also suggests not allowing the opponents to play in a major at the two level. If East passes, should West compete to the three level? The quality of West's suit is such that I think 3 would be a good bid, despite the poor overall distribution (no shortness, no controls in two suits.) So, both East and West have a chance to compete to 3 and the question becomes whether N/S will bid over this? For N/S the vulnerability is an argument against bidding, and North certainly can't bid again with a 4333 hand. South has better distribution, but like West has two doubletons with no controls in either suit. If North has values in either s or s, they might well be wasted. As it happens, of course, North has the absolute perfect hand for South, so bidding on will work out well. Notice, though, how bad things would be for South if North had the K and Q instead of the KQ.

On the actual lie of the cards, 3 has four unavoidable losers. A contract is a little more interesting. There are four top losers, but if N/S don't cash exactly two tricks in each of their side suits, then declarer will be able to pitch a loser on the suit. Fortunately, South should be able to work out the right defense, knowing that North is likely to hold exactly three s on the bidding. Furthermore, South can see that the suit is working for declarer. So, for example, let's say that North leads the King, South encourages and North continues with the Queen. South should have no problem overtaking this since they are holding the Jack, and then cashing out two tricks, rather than leaving North to guess whether to continue with a third round of s. Making a contract will be a top for N/S, and E/W pairs will get a top when N/S misdefend and allow 10 tricks to make in a contract.

With an eight card suit and few cards in the majors West will not be expecting the bidding to go 1- P to them. How should West proceed? With 7 HCP, it isn't completely clear to preempt, as NT might be a a very good contract if East has a balanced 18-19 HCP. In fact, a grand slam might even be making if East has the four missing Aces and a King. Given the vulnerability, a jump to 5 doesn't show a completely weak hand, however, so slam might still be reached. The argument for preempting is that the opponents are certain to have a major suit fit somewhere. Knowing that E/W hold half the HCP and that South chose not to bid, West might just bid more slowly, hoping to end up in the right contract when East has a strong hand. But what can West bid to show this hand? 2 might work out, but might also make it easy for North to get into the bidding. 4 might also turn out to be the best bid. As with most distributional hands, there are no perfect bids. As it happens, North will indeed want to enter the bidding, and might double no matter what West bids. N/S can't actually make much of anything though it looks unlikely that West will pass even if East starts to penalty double N/S.

A contract has three losers, but only if the defense leads a at trick one. If South leads a , declarer can win the King and immediately lead a . Knowing that declarer can't go wrong in the suit, North can do no better than go up with the Ace and lead a , but it will be too late as declarer can win the Ace, cash the King, pitching a and will only lose the two red suit Aces.

Pass6NTAll pass

Opposite a 1NT opening, North should recognize the power of their two sources of tricks and should drive to the good 6NT contract. Pairs who play a strong 1 opening might just have the bidding tools for North to find out about South's perfect fitting hand and bid a grand slam, but this will not happen at many tables. The only real issue with the North hand is whether to search for a minor suit slam or not. A 4-4 suit fit is particularly appealing, as the suit in the North hand might allow South to pitch away a slow loser, for example, and eventually ruff a in the South hand. Certainly there are more hands that will make a grand slam in a minor suit contract than in NT. However, it doesn't look like North will be able to find out if South has an appropriate hand to make a grand, and since 6NT will outscore a small slam in a minor even if the minor suit contract makes all 13 tricks, it looks like North should just plan on heading to 6NT. North won't have a good way of finding out whether the AK are missing, but they can at least check whether two Aces are missing before blasting into slam. As it happens, of course, South has about the only hand they could have consistent with a 1NT opener that makes 13 tricks cold. Getting to 6NT will be a relatively common result, but still should be above average, as some will play in 6 and there will be a few who don't make it to slam at all. Those who have the tools to get to 7NT will get a well deserved top.

Pass4All pass

N/S will need to be a little aggressive to get to the good 4 game on this hand. After West opens 1NT, North is at the top of a 1NT bid. Most experts play a 1NT overcall with a slightly broader range than a 1NT opening, so 15-18 is pretty normal. If this is the range for N/S, then South is just strong enough to invite to game, starting by looking for a fit. South does have two tens that are paired with other honors, and the 10 is likely to be a working card on this auction as well. Once a fit has been found, South should be happy o invite, and North has an easy acceptance. A contract turns out to be quite a bit better than a NT contract. If East leads a against 3NT, declarer will have to play East for the Queen to make, which will not be easy. Assuming East leads fourth best, declarer can work out that West has four s, but this won't be enough to conclude that West is short in s, as West's and length aren't known. In any case, declarer will be lucky if they are able to work things out. In a contract, life is much easier. Let's say that East leads their singleton . Declarer can win the Ace, lead a to the King and take the finesse, puling trump and eventually giving up one trick in each side suit. Declarer might even work out the situation if they assume that West has five s and some length implied in the majors given East's lack of a bid. It seems unlikely for declarer to play a to the 10 at trick two, but even getting s wrong, a contract will make 10 tricks. Of course, if East leads a against any contract, this will be a disaster for the defense, as it will make things easy for declarer. As some South's will pass 1NT, getting to any game should be a good result for N/S, with top scores going to those who are fortunate enough to get a lead and make either 10 tricks in NT, or 11 tricks in s.
