There are several ways to handle the South hand. For pairs playing Smolen South will start with a 2♣ bid. Her side will get to 4♠ as well however the auction will differ from the one above.

Play of the board is unexciting. Declarer must lose the A and one trump. When North gains the lead she will cash the ♠A and continue the suit, crashing the missing spade honors.

If the defense doesn't attack diamonds declarer will lead a diamond toward her king. With the A onside North can't go wrong and will only lose one trick in the suit. She can ruff her remaining diamonds in dummy.

North has a lot of work to do on this board. She has the values to be in game however she is missing aces and kings and needs to dislodge them to win sufficient tricks.

East may choose to lead a heart, an unbid major. While this will establish two tricks for the defense it will also establish two tricks for declarer.

There is a shortage of entries to dummy. We think North will cash her ♣A and continue the suit. She has the high honors. This play works well on this board as the ♣K is offside. Declarer loses nothing and gains entries to dummy.

Declarer now has seven tricks in the form of two hearts, two diamonds and three clubs. She will get one top spade and must fond a ninth trick. The best place for this is in spades which means she must find the ♠J. To succeed she must play the ♠Q and then lead a spade toward her ♠K9, taking the finesse. If left to her own resources we expect most Norths to play East for the ♠J because of the spade length in dummy.

Of course if the defense plays spades first declarer will win two spade tricks and have an easier time of making her contract.

There is a similarity between the board and Board 2. On that board declarer had to find the ♠J to make her contract. On this board declarer must find the Q to make an overtrick.

If West leads a diamond that problem will go away and South will make at least 10 tricks. On this board, a club lead serves the defense best. South may duck on round of clubs to sever communication. However she may cash the K and lead a diamond toward dummy, where the diamond length is located. She will take the finesse, losing to East.

South has her nine tricks however and will make her contract. She will have three spades, two hearts, three diamonds and one club.

Smolen bids come up infrequently however we have two this afternoon. Partnerships playing Smolen will have an auction which differs from the one above..

Doubleton leads usually don't work for the defense unless they occur in a suit bid by one side of the partnership. On this board the lead of a doubleton club by East is magic. West will take two club tricks, give her partner a ruff and East can cash the setting trick in the A.

If East leads any other suit declarer will win, unblock the top hearts from dummy and try the spade finesse against West. The finesse works. Declarer can discard three losers from dummy She does well if she discards clubs as the A is onside. She will be able to ruff two clubs and discard her third club on dummy's K. This line will allow her to make 12 tricks.

NS have a lengthy auction. Some Norths will open and Some Wests will opt to start the action with a Weak Two Bid.

in our auction, South will open and rebid 1NT as the lesser of evils. North will make a Checkback bid asking for four hearts or three spades. South has neither. North will invite game with 2NT and South will accept.

West has a lead problem. She would like to try a diamond however South bid that suit so she will look elsewhere. She will opt for a major suit and since North bid spades we think West will lead a heart.

This gives declarer three heart tricks. She has one spade. In the play of diamonds the J will pop from the East hand. Declarer's diamond spots will grow into a third diamond trick. Eventually declarer will lead a club toward dummy. Since she needs two more tricks to make her contract she should finesse the ♣J. On this layout she can't go wrong.

BID

Both sides will compete. NS have the higher ranked suit so they will compete to at least 3♠. EW, especially West may continue to 4 and NS may take the push and bid their game.

We dislike the lead of an ace which is not accompanied by the king however East did support diamonds and there is the possibility tat she holds the K. We think West will lead her ace in that suit. We think she should try the heart finesse first as it offers more options. Declarer can later get to dummy by ruffing a diamond. If the heart finesse fails she will establish two heart tricks/ If necessary she can ruff a heart as another entry to dummy.

Both plays work on this layout. She will restrict her spade losers to one and her heart losers to none. She can ruff a diamond in dummy. She can run her good clubs after the first round of spades as East can only ruff with a winning spade.

Sout is in the driver's seat and should win 10 tricks.

She may continue by taking her other ace and continuing clubs. Declarer is in dummy and needs to try the spade finesse and the heart finesse. Which should she try first?

There aren't very many 12 HCP hands which don't open. Perhaps East holds one of them. However we expect most Easts will open, planning to rebid 1NT unless partner bids hearts.

And this afternoon partner will bid hearts. East will raise and West will bid the heart game.

The defense is powerless against correct declarer play.

Declarer will win the opening lead, draw trump in three rounds and dislodge the ♠A. She can ruff a club in the West hand. She can discard a diamond from the East hand on West's long spade. She is now in position to ruff a diamonds in the East hand to make 12 tricks.

West likes her hand but wants to play in hearts and only hearts. This is unfortunate as she will likely go down. North must find a lead. EW bid both res suits so North will lead a spade or a club. We don't like leads away from a queen so if we were sitting North we would lead a spade if for no other reason than we don't want to lead away from a queen.

The spade leads strikes gold. south will take two spade tricks. She can cash her A and wait for a heart trick.

Declarer must play carefully on a non-spade lead. She has only one entry to dummy. So she must establish her diamonds prior to drawing trump. At Trick 2 West should unblock her clubs then play a diamond to dummy. South must duck. Declarer can now ruff a club. Now she plays the A and another diamond. South can take her ace but must allow declarer to get to dummy in either spades or diamonds.

South can now finesse in hearts and exit a heart to South who must again allow declarer to get to dummy.

On this line West will make 10 tricks.

South will show a Limit Raise in diamonds according to partnership methods. The auction will be very different at many tables than the one above.

North may consider slam as her values are in aces and she has shortness in two suits. If North makes a move toward slam her side will end in 6 which is an excellent contract on this layout.

Declarer can win the opening lead, draw trump in two rounds. Now she cashes three rounds of spades discarding a heart from the South hand. She can crossruff the board for 13 tricks.

IF the partnership settles for the notrump game, the defense will lead a heart. Declarer has 11 top tricks with no opportunity for more.

East will show a hand she likes and West must decide whether to push past 3NT. We think many Wests will bid the notrump slam.

South has a choice of leading a heart or a diamond. Both appear to be harmless however West did bid hearts. So South may elect to lead a diamond, On this layout the heart lead is the only one which sets the contract as East has 12 tricks once she dislodges the ♠A. The heart lead would of course establish a second trick for the defense either immediately or later in the play of the board.

EW have a good auction and get to a reasonable contract. Unfortunately the bridge gods aren't smiling on them and they will go set.

South will lead a major suit. We prefer a heart as we like to save our honors. The heart lead works well for the defense.

Declarer will win the trick however NS have found their suit and will continue hearts when they gain the lead. This will establish three heart tricks for the defense. They have two clubs tricks coming to them and perhaps a spade if declarer cashes her top spades prematurely.

Nor will declarer will not prevail on any other lead except a club lead. Let's say South leads a spade. Declarer will win. She can cash four diamonds and establish two hearts. She has a second spade however she cannot score a club trick on her own before the defense gets two spades, two clubs and one heart.
