North opens 1  and South must bid. 1 NT forcing? Or 1 ? If playing Flannery surely 1 NT, after which North would show reversing values and four spades with a 2  reverse, raised by South. If South can bid 1  without promising a better or longer suit, North will force to game in spades. 4  shows a singleton or void in clubs along with four spades and game forcing values.
South will hate his hand in context, surely having no slam interest. 4  will end the auction. North must stop bidding! When you make a Splinter bid, you are essentially making partner captain of the auction. After all, did North not bid 4  with the purpose of assisting partner in the evaluation of the partnership's combined assets? So why deny South the opportunity to exercise the judgment you offered?

  1. Hearts with a diamond tolerance. Snapdragon!

East is going to have to downgrade his hand in support of spades -- or bidding 4  -- because of the huge diamond problem.  xxx is awful, and there is every reason to believe that West might also have  xxx on the auction. So downgrade, downgrade, downgrade!
West's 3  bid is not forcing, of course, and should assuredly show six spades with decent values. If East bids 4 , there would have been game available if South had the decency to hold  Qx, rather than the singleton. The bad trump break dooms 4 , not the most surprising result, considering the auciton.

Some lucky South players will face reticent Easts and be allowed to play 3 , tying for a top. With such enticing distribution, East takes a small chance on West's passing or bidding clubs, and finds the perfect spot in 4 .

Competition is mandatory in pairs scoring.

  1. DONT (diamonds and a major

North uses a popular method of interfering with the opponents' bidding, DONT (Acronym for Disturb Opponents' No Trump).

East has to take a position on a close decision. Playing Lebensohl , 3  is a forcing bid, and that will lead to a bad result if NS will just leave well enough alone. Interference calls have as a purpose making bidding decisions difficult for the opponents, and that purpose is about to be fulfilled. What will happen?

South might think, "I have a big fit for diamonds, and a fit for whichever major partner also promises. Therefore, I should bid." And 3  comes tumbling from his bidding box.
West passes, awaiting further developments. East has promised another bid with 3 . North also passed, having minimal values.

Now, can East be the hero? Having already overbid by a tad, he might just make a "matchpoint double," a/k/a a "BOP" double (Balance Of Power). It is not an intuitive call, but a logical one. If our side has 23-25 HCP (a known fact), and I have shown my long suit, should it not be logical now to show the strength of the hand? Sure! Double.

Now The defense prevails on this hand by getting two black aces, the  AK, and a heart ruff, and it should not be hard to achieve that.

A heavily contested auction, kudos to East.

  1. Checkback for major suit clarification. Primarily for heart support after a 1  response, but if East did not have three hearts, 3  showing four spades would be proper.

When the heart finesse works, eleven tricks are easy-peasey, but the twelfth trick is required for a good matchpoint score. There are three tries: First, if spades are 3-3, the fourth spade and the third diamond will provide discards for two club losers.

The second try is for a diamond-spade squeeze.

The third try is to ruff a club.

The latter two can be combined! After, say, a spade queen lead, win and take the heart finesse and lead another heart, finding the  Kx onside. Then, the key try is to lead the  8 from dummy. As the cards lie, South won't be able to rise with the queen, so North, bereft of another trump, will win and lead a diamond. Now declarer can cash the  A, cross to the  A, ruff a club, and cash diamond tops for black loser discards.

If South were clairvoyant and played the  Q, exiting with the last trump, the club ruff is voided, but now the count is rectified for a squeeze, and a top diamond, the  A, the other spade honor, and the rest of the hearts are cashed, coming down to West's cashing the  2, holding also  4  7 T, and dummy holding T  KQ8. North cannot defend against both of dummy's threats, having to hold the  J and three diamonds. Unfortunately for North, dummy discards afterwards, and can take the rest of the tricks.
