Although the bidding will go as shown at many tables, E/W have several chances to get into the bidding and discover their fit. First, I confess that I would be strongly tempted to open the West hand with 1 despite being vulnerable (it would be an automatic 3rd seat opening if E/W were non-vulnerable.) East can play will in two suits and has no rebid problems, being able to bid 1 if East responds in a red suit, and being able to rebid 2 if East responds 1NT. Alternatively, East might double North's 1 opening or (ugh) overcall a five card suit headed by the 8. Lastly, East might act over North's 2 bid, without yet knowing whether South is a minimum or maximum pass. As it happens, South has a maximum, but E/W have a great fit and can make nine tricks in a contract. If E/W are silent, should South invite over North's 2 raise? It is true that South has 10 HCP, but what an ugly 10, with no controls outside of the trump suit and a lot of losers all over the place. North will likely accept a game invitation as you can even construct reasonable South hands where slam makes. A contract has a loser, almost certainly two losers and might need both a good split and the King onside to make 10 tricks. As it is, with the suit not breaking, it won't even matter whether the King is onside or not, declarer can only make nine tricks. Any E/W pairs who manage to play in a contract and make should do well above average.

This hand is a good example of why experts are often more conservative at making two level overcalls than intermediate players and strongly prefer to do so with a six card suit, a very good five card suit, or significant extra values. If North overcalls 1, East and South will pass, West will reopen with a double and North will get to play 2 doubled. Or, South might pull to 2 which will also quickly get doubled. Both s and s will be disastrous contracts, each going off at least three and possibly off four. If North stays quiet, E/W should get to 3NT, though it might be declared either way. With all of the suits sitting right, declarer can make ten tricks in NT, four in each major and either two s, or a and a . However, declarer does not know that the suit is breaking, the Jack is coming down, both honors are onside and both honors are also onside. Furthermore, transportation to the East hand is limited, so it is easy to see how declarer might end up making only nine tricks. +430 should be above average, but the top E/W scores will occur when North enters the bidding and E/W ending up going +500 or +800 defending a black suit contract doubled.

1Pass2NTAll pass

With a good six card suit, and two Aces and defense, I would always open the West hand at any vulnerability. The vulnerability is, however, forbidding for N/S and thus, South will likely pass assuming that East bids 2NT over West's 1 opening. If East instead makes an inverted minor suit raise to 2, South might venture a double, though it will be a risky proposition. Assuming East bids 2NT, the West hand looks like it would prefer to play 3, but for many pairs this will be forcing and East will have to just pass 2NT. Playing at IMPs, it would not be unreasonable to just bid 3NT, hoping that the source of tricks in s will provide enough tricks before the opponents can take five tricks, but at matchpoints it looks best to pass. As it happens, on the actual hand, eight tricks is the limit of the hand, but the opening lead will make a difference. If South leads a , declarer will win with the 9 and take a finesse. North can win and will have to decide whether to lead a or a . If North leads a declarer can finesse and will be up to nine tricks. If North instead leads a , South will take three s and the defense will eventually score a red suit trick. If South leads a , declarer will likely end up with eight tricks, but if South leads a , North will probably win and switch to a . If South continues s, and North does also when in with the King, then declarer could play South for the Queen and end up with nine tricks. Just playing in NT will be good for E/W as a contract can only make nine tricks for +110. Going +150 in 2NT should be an excellent score, as few will be playing in game and making.

At first it might look odd for South to sign off in 3NT holding 17 HCP. But, North's 2NT rebid promises a balanced hand, and since North didn't open 1NT, North must have either 11-14 HCP, or 18-19 HCP. With the stronger hand, North should bid 4NT over 3NT, so South should only invite slam if they want to play it opposite a maximum North hand that is within the 12-14 HCP range. South is close to strong enough for this, but with no five card suit, and only a moderate fit for North's suit, I think South isn't quite strong enough. Some experts use 4 on auctions like this to show a serious 4NT bid, and 4NT to show just a mild slam invitation, but I don't think South is quite worth even a mild invitation. Notice that if the King were in s instead, that North would accept the slam invitation, but 6NT would only make if declarer guessed the Queen. On the actual hand, the nice layout in the suit and the King being onside insures that if declarer guesses both red queens correctly they will make all 13 tricks.

West has no reason not to lead a against 3NT and this will remove one of the red Queen guesses for declarer. The communication back and forth between the hand is such that declarer's best plays are either to lead the Queen next or finesse the Jack. If declarer finesses the Jack, West will win and no matter what they do next, declarer will start taking some black suit finesses, cashing tricks, and when everything works out will end up with 12 tricks. If declarer instead leads the Queen next and East covers, putting declarer in their hand, they might decide to finesse for the Queen through West and now will end up with all 13 tricks. +720 should be a near top for N/S as few pairs will end up in slam.
