South will open and move toward slam. She needs one ace from partner to have a reasonable play at a minor suit slam. Her partner shows on ace and she is content to bid her slam.

The defense will get one trick. At first it looks like declarer can discard North's hearts if she is in the diamond slam however she will not have a trump left in dummy to ruff her heart

We think some East players will open their hand. They have a decent diamond suit and they do have four spades. This is an aggressive opening however if they do open their side will get to the heart game as West will take a view and bid the game based on her great suit. (South may overcall clubs however many partnerships prefer the minor suit overcall to be six cards in length.

If East passes then South will open. Nothing can keep West silent and we think she may find the heart game. She will at least get to 3. East has prime values and is the best which can be expected for a passed hand. If West gets to 3 by herself then East may bid the game on her aces.

Everything is sitting pretty for declarer. The spade honors are onside. The trump split 3 - 2.

On the lead of a diamond West must lose three tricks, two spades and one diamond. However if /North leads another suit declarer will make an overtrick. She can win the A and lead a spade toward her hand. She will win the return, draw trump and play a high spade, losing to South. However West now has the winning spade. And with the suit splitting 3 - 3 dummy's fourth spade provides a parking spot for her second diamond. Notice that South cannot play diamonds so unless North leads a diamond immediately it's too late for the defense and will not get their diamond trick.

We can see some West players opening their hand 1NT. In this case East will transfer and West will declare the spade game. In our auction West opens 1 and stretches the value of her hand by reversing into 2. We think East's 2 bid is Fourth Suit Forcing to game. West shows her delayed spade support which should be three cards.

The crux of the board is to play North for the Q and to drop the Q10.

The first is likely as most like to take a finesse through strength. So most declarers will cash the K and lead the jack fro a finesse. After drawing trump declarer may cash her high diamonds intending to play South for the Q but this works even better than planned. North will follow suit with her diamond honors. West now holds the high diamonds.

Bridge can be such an easy game.

The magic play in clubs on this layout is to lead the 9 toward the jack in the East hand. This will bring the club suit in for four winners. If North plays low, declarer will duck and continue the suit.

West is tempted to bid 3NT at her second turn however she does not have a club stopper. She doesn't even have a hint of a stopper. If she bids 3NT the defense will take the first five club tricks.

She has three card support for her partner's heart and she has a high heart honor. We think she should try for the heart game in the Moysean fit as she has a source of tricks in diamonds.

The heart game is golden. Declarer will win the lead as quickly as possible. South is unlikely to lead a club. Declarer will win the opening lead, draw trump can cash seven diamonds. If South did not lead a spade her side will win a spade at Trick 13. /if /south's opening lead is a spade then declarer will win 13 tricks.

The auction is easier than the play on this board. South will show her spades and her partner will show support. They will get to a reasonable spade game.

West will lead the J.

Most will go down in the game contract. South must diagnose the situation in the minor suits to succeed.

She must cash her two heart winners. Now she cashes her A and exits a spade.

East has no good return. If East returns a diamond declarer wins in dummy, takes the club finesse and then cashes the A. She now exits a club to /west who must play a heart or a club giving declarer a sluff and a ruff.

North will enjoy herself takes finesses and winning them.

It is almost impossible to win fewer than 11 tricks on this layout. /the diamonds and clubs split favorably for declarer and she can win eight tricks in those suits. Both finesses work in the majors and she should be able to win at least five tricks in hearts and spades.

It sounds like North has 13 tricks however the defense will win two so that limits declarer to 11 tricks. There are other combinations but they all lead to 11 tricks.

South is not happy having to open 1 however her alternative is to pass and that doesn't seem right. North will bid diamonds as she is too strong to jump to 4. South must rebid her hearts to show her minimum opener. (The rebid on this sequence does not promise six hearts. It's a default bid as South has no other option available. Most play that 2NT would show extra values.) North bids the heart game.

Interestingly trump is the offense's weakest suit. South will lose three heart tricks unless East rises the first time hearts are led from dummy.

Declarer should play three rounds of spades discarding a club from dummy. She shojuld cash her A and ruff a club prior to playing trump.

If West ever leads a diamond the contract will fail as East will ruff one diamond.

West upgrades the Q in her hand as her partner bid the suit. Her jump to the three level shows extra values and six hearts. (/her extra values come from the fact that she likes the Q.)

There is not much to the play of this board. At first blush declarer must lose a spade and a heart however North may lead the Q. This will give declarer an chance for an extra overtrick. West will win the Q in hand, draw two rounds of trump ending in her hand and take the club finesse against North's J. Declarer can now discard her losing spade on dummy's good club.

With the favorable lead and on this line declarer will win 12 tricks.

West will lead the J which gives nothing away on this board. Declarer will win to cash three high diamonds.

The club lead suggests that West has four. Declarer must decide whether to try for 3 - 3 clubs or for East to hold a high heart honor.

So we think declarer should play a diamond to dummy and lead a heart toward her hand, finessing the jack when East plays low.

Declarer can return to dummy with a spade to cash dummy's Q and then lead another heart toward her hand.

This line will get declarer 12 tricks.

North bids 3 to show a suit with two of the top three honors. (This is usually a six card suit.)

South shows her support of clubs and North cuebids a spade control denying controls in diamonds and hearts.

South can count 12 top tricks. She has one spade, four hearts, one diamond and six clubs. Little does she know that partner took a view and only has five.

West will lead a spade.

South is not pleased. The club slam is safer but she must try make her contract.

She will win the opening lead, cash her heart and club winners and eventually take the diamond finesse as she has no other play for 12 tricks. The finesse works and her contract comes home.

East may have led a diamond but for the auction. So she will start a heart.

Declarer will win and continue the suit alternating between spade plays and hearts as she wants to dislodge both major aces.

The defense must switch to a diamond at some point lest that trick will disappear. Declarer can win two spades, three hearts, five clubs and one diamond. While the defense cannot win more than one trick on the suit they must win that trick to stay with the field. If they only will two aces they will get a bottom.
