  1. Hearts and a minor

North will open her hand and East with 10 red cards will compete. In the modern game there are many ways to show a two - suited hand and East will bid according to their methods.

Our auction illustrates a version of Cappelletti where East will show hearts and a minor. West will inquire about the minor by bidding 2NT and when East shows diamonds as her second suit, West will prefer to hearts as that will score better then diamonds.

Declarer knows that North holds all the high cards and will play the board accordingly.

South will lead the J. Declarer will play low from dummy and North must duck as well lest she give declarer two club tricks. East will win the opening lead in hand with her king. She will play a heart to dummy to cash the A discarding a club from her hand.

Her best line may be to crossruff the hand,, ruffing spades in her hand. She should table the Q. North cannot gain by covering. Declarer continue by ruffing a spade, cashing the A and ruffing another spade. She can exit with a club.

On this line /east has seven tricks - one spade, one spade ruff, one heart, two diamonds, one diamond ruff and one club.

She is a position to ruff win several more tricks depending how North continues. Basically East can exit diamonds each time she ruffs a spade or a club. She should score three more tricks.

East will start the action. Most Souths will pass as they have a poor hand. North however will not remain silence as she holds 12 cards in the minors. South will show her hearts at her second turn giving North the opportunity to complete the description of her hand. South will prefer diamonds and North will bid the game based on the shape of her hand.

There is no much to the play of this board. The defense will win on spade and one club

North will preempt the auction. West will reopen with a double rather than allow North to play unimpeded. East will show her hearts and the partnership will settle there. South has a good hand and spade support. She may compete to 3, a contract which will likely make at the table.

In her heart contract, East will lose five tricks. She must lose one spade. She must lose one heart. She will lose one diamond even if she drops the Q singleton and she must lose two club tricks.

If North plays in spades she will likely win nine tricks. The defense will start a heart and shift. If East shifts ti a low diamond her partner will likely play the 10 saving her ace to capture the kind. She will play a trump to the king in dummy which East will capture to exit a heart.

East will win the heart and now play another diamond which North will ruff.

Her problem on this board is that she has no entry to dummy.

North is forced to play trump from her hand. Consequently she will lose two spades to go along with her two heart losers.

Regardless where your partnership is playing Standard or 2/1 West will take a second big and it will be showing a big hand. Some Wests may try 3.

South may lead a club, her "stronger"suit. East should allow the lead to run to her 10. She can now lead clubs toward dummy twice to win three clubs tricks. This will allow her to make her contract.

If South leads a diamond declarer will call for dummy's king, winning the trick. However South has established four diamond tricks for herself. The best declarer can do is to play on clubs to hold the contract to down one. If East leads a heart toward her queen North will win the K and South will win four diamonds and one club and the contract will fail by two tricks.

A further word about the auction. If West's second bid is 3 responder may try 3 and West will be declarer in 3NT. North will likely lead a spade. Declarer will win and if she plays on hearts before she tries to establish a club trick she will make her contract as she will win two hearts five spades, and either two clubs or one club and one diamond.

South has a difficult bid in the balancing seat as she is a little strong for her 1 bid. She will however catch up when her partner shows a Limit Raise. South will bid the game.

West will lead a club.

East's failure to bid marks West will almost all the missing high cards. There is possibility that East holds the K however the odds favor West to hold that card.

South has some difficult decisions to make early. She should finesse in spades? Should she finesse in diamonds to discard clubs?

We don't think she should finesse in spades as she expects that finesse to lose. She does however expect the diamond finesse to win and she wants to establish diamonds. So upon winning the opening lead we think declarer should take the diamond finesse. She can then cash the A to discard one club and ruff a diamond. When the K falls her suit is established. She should now cash her A intending to get to dummy to discard her last club on the good diamonds. However she gets a bonus in that the K will fall.

South has the e=rest of the tricks.

East will try Stayman looking for a major suit fit and then invite the notrump game. West has a good 16 in that most of her values are in aces and kings. Furthermore she has a five - card sidesuit. We think most West's will accept the invite.

This is an unfortunate board for EW. They are in the right spot however nothing works for them.

North will lead a heart and declarer will call for the 10 from dummy losing to South's queen. South will make a switch.

Looking at dummy's four card suits we think South will switch to clubs, dummy's weakest suit. This hits gold as it will establish three club tricks for the defense.

The defense can now sit back and wait for the stetting trick in either spades or diamonds.

The defense is powerless on this board.

Regardless how declarer plays hearts she will win four heart tricks. A quick examination shows that declarer can win two spades, four hearts, four diamonds and one club giving her 11 tricks.

It appears that the defense can score some club tricks however if they attack the suit they will establish declarer's intermediate club spots. The best the defense can do is to win two clubs however they will establish two club tricks for declarer.

Declarer will now make her 11 tricks in the form of one spade, four hearts, four diamonds and two clubs.

West's first bid is a guess. It may be right to try 4 or even 5. Then again the hand is a strong one and it may be right to open 1 and compete further if the other side gets into the auction.

NS will compete and be pushed as high as 5. We do not see anyone bidding the slam although it works on this layout.

If EW bid 5 it is difficult for NS to double the contract although that would be a great spot for them at matchpoints as they will set the contract by two tricks for a great score.

Defending 5 NS will win the obvious four tricks in one spade, pone heart, and two diamonds. The offense has no opportunity to establish a spot to discard losers.

This hand requires a tough defense to set declarer. West must lead a diamond to set the contract and we don't think many will find that lead, especially after East has opened 1.On the spade lead declarer has the tempo to knockout the A and avoid the diamond ruff.

We think West will be excited and aggressive with her hand. Partner will show spades and West has three great spades as support. She has a five card sidesuit and a singleton club ace.
she knows that partner does not have three hearts (else East would have supported) so East should be able to ruff the third round of hearts. Even if hearts split 4 - 2 the suit should produce some winners.

There is a magical layout on this board and declarer will make an overtrick. She cannot get the spades wrong. The hearts split 3 - 3 so that suit will be established with one ruff. East can discard one diamond and one club. The East has now has no losers and East will win 13 tricks.

West will open with a Weak Two bid. East has a great supporting hand and will likely bid the game. Her values are in aces and kings and she has a five card sidesuit.

North will lead a high club. Declarer will win and try the spade finesse which works. She will play a second round of spades drawing the outstanding trump. Now she will play a diamond toward dummy, losing to the king however the diamond suit is now established and she can discard her third club East's diamonds.

If South does not cash her A she will not get the trick and declarer will win 12 tricks.
