South has a decision to make at her second turn to bid. Her hand is worth a 3 invitation however she may upgrade because of the five card sidesuit. Her hearts may prove to be a source of tricks. She may try 3 or bid the spade game as above. Then again we expect some will take the low road and only invite with a 3 bid.

We think most pairs will end in 3.

East will lead the K. Should declarer duck?

North can avoid the loss of a spade is she plays a diamond to dummy and lead the Q. West will cover and declarer must now finesse East for the 10. If declarer looks at this play a little longer she will see that West will win the second round of trump and return the 10.

Declarer must now either lose two clubs or East's 10 will be promoted into a winner.

We think once declarer realizes this position she will do something different in how she plays the trump suit. She almost certainly needs East to hold the A to succeed in her contract.

So we think declarer should win the opening lead and immediately table the 10. If East takes her ace declarer can repeat the heart finesse later. More importantly East cannot safely continue clubs. Most Easts will duck. Declarer can now play a diamond to the board and play the spades as discussed above.

NS will have a simple auction and get to the notrump game. West will lead a club, a lead which is favorable for declarer.

South however will struggle in her contract and results will vary.

South can try establish hearts or spades however she will lose two tricks in either suit. She must also lose a diamond. And she will likely lose two other tricks.

Let's consider the play in hearts. Declarer will win the opening lead in her hand and table the J, ducking if West covers. West will continue a club. Declarer must duck once and win the third round. She now plays another heart. If West rises with her remaining honor declarer will win and surrender a heart to East who is out of clubs. If East returns a spade declarer has no choice but to finesse. When the J wins the trick declarer can later finesse spades again winning three spade tricks. If East returns a diamond declarer can can win two diamond tricks.

Either way declarer should come to nine tricks.

If declarer plays on spades she may not be as fortunate. She will have to lose two spades and if East shifts to a heart South will fail in her contract.

Many 2/1 pairs do not play East's notrump bid as forcing by a passed hand.

Regardless West will make a jump shift to show her strength. East will chose the notrump game.

South must choose between a heart and a club lead.

Declarer will win either lead and play a diamond to the ace and return a diamond. North may take her king but declarer will have four diamond tricks.

North will return a club. Declarer may finesse however she has 10 tricks.

Some afternoons the bridge gods do not smile favorably on players. North has a huge hand and a partner who is bereft of points.

North will bid the notrump game of her won volition and struggle to make it.

East will lead a heart. Declarer will duck two rounds, winning the third. She can play three rounds of clubs.

Then she will play a high diamond. West must be careful to keep an exit card and should win the second round exiting a diamond.

Declarer will win two spades, one heart, two diamonds and three clubs.

Interestingly we expect this to be an average board at most tables.

North's hand goes up in value when she learns of her partner's singleton club. All of North's high cards are "working" and she has no wasted values.

She shows a diamond control and when South shows control of the spade suit North bids the heart slam.

West is under pressure to select a lead. She knows South has a singleton club. AS dangerous as it is to lead away form a king against a slam we think West should lead the club.

East will take her ace and the defense will retire as declarer has the remaining tricks. If West leads a suit other than clubs declarer will take her 12 tricks and surrender a club on the last trick.

We have another board on which NS will bid a game and make two overtricks.

There is no reason for the partnership to consider a slam.

There are several lines to 12 tricks.

Declarer will win the opening lead. (It may be a heart in which case some declarers will try the Q from dummy.) She will draw trump in three rounds and play a diamond to dummy's ace. When the Q appears from the East hand declarer will consider that it's a singleton and continue diamonds finessing. This will give her four diamond tricks. She can establish three clubs to go with her four spades and one heart.

East will open 1 and West will do all she can to fall fall off her seat as she has vision of grandeur on this board.

Depending upon partnership agreements West will take some action and drive her side to the diamond slam.

It turns out this this is not that great a slam as it requires finding South with the K. That is the case so declarer will come to 12 tricks. If South does not cash her Q she will win it on the last trick as declarer does not have enough clubs on which to discard her spades.

South would love to preempt the auction with 3 however on this vulnerability it may be costly so we think may will content themselves with bidding 2.

If South does try 3 EW will have a more difficult time finding the notrump game. West will bid spades, East will bid diamonds. It's difficult for West to be 4NT naturally here. However if she does it will be the magic bid. Over the 3 opening the partnership will get to either 4 or 5 with the former occurring more frequently.

Over the 2 opening EW will get to the notrump game.

Since South has no entry to her hearts declarer will win the third round, cash six diamonds and play on clubs. The defense will win four tricks however declarer will prevail.

East will have no difficulty playing the round suits (hearts and clubs.) She should be able to manage them for no losers.

She must play the spades and diamonds for three losers.

One line is to ruff two diamonds in dummy. Now she can cash her A, get to hand and play a high spade. With the bad split she will lose two spades but make her contract.

Playing trump will be less successful as she will lose three diamonds and one spade.

There is little to the play of this board. South will lead a high club. Declarer has the remaining tricks. She will win the next trick, draw trump, cash her high hearts and get to dummy to discard her losing diamond.

The question is whether can bid the slam.

If West tries a 2 bid East can see see greater potential in her hand. She might then be friskier and explore for slam.

We expect most to play in the spade game.

East takes a view on this board. South will open and West will overcall. East has values for game. If she bids a suit West will rebid her spades since East's bid is forcing. East will end in 3NT regardless the auction.

East is desperate for tricks on this board. She can place almost all the missing high cards in the South hand.

South may lead a diamond and East will play low. North will take her queen and return the suit. South will take her ace establishing two tricks for declarer.

South may now play a club. Declarer needs to preserve dummy's J as an entry to dummy so she should play low and win the trick in hand with the Q. She should take her two diamonds before she leads a spade towards dummy. South will of course play low.

East should play the 10 as South rates to hold the jack. More importantly if the J is on the South hand declarer has a chance to establish a few spade tricks. When the 10 holds East can continue with a high spade from dummy. South will take her ace. She has no good return. A club gives declarer an entry to dummy with the J. As does a heart. And a spade makes it easy for declarer to get that trick.

East should now have nine tricks. If South returns a spade dummy will win. Declarer can come to hand with a heart and lead a club toward dummy.

East will win two spades, two hearts, two diamonds and three clubs. (If East wins three hearts she only needs two club tricks.)

EW have a civil auction to get to their heart game.

Useless doubletons are usually not good leads. Nor is that lead helpful to the defense on this board however South may lead a spade for lack of anything better to lead.

North will take her ace and return the suit.

Declarer will win, draw trump in three rounds and lead a diamond toward dummy, playing the queen. South will win.

Regardless what South returns declarer has the remaining tricks on this layout. She will win the return, cash the K, ruff a diamonds. When the jack falls from the South hand, declarer's 10 is a winner. She can come to her hand with a club and score her overtrick.
