  1. Takeout Double

  3. 15+ high card points & 6+ good spades

A quick look at the deals and this L˜˜Ks like slam week, or maybe not. However, this week starts off with an interesting auction. There is ALWAYS more than one way to bid a hand (almost always anyway).

Bidding: North deals and with a really good hand of 15 hcp and just 5 losers opens the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid to jump to 3. East with an opening hand of 13 hcp and 7 loser and with the Kx well placed makes a Takeout Double. South has some options depending on partnership agreements. If South treats his hand with three spades, 11 hcp and 9 losers as game forcing hand, South can cuebid 2 (East implied hearts with the TO Double). If, as in the auction here, South treats his hand as an invitational hand, South redoubles East. The redouble says South has 10-12 hcp (but not game forcing, otherwise South would have cuebid 2) and wants the next bid.

West is taken off the hook by South's redouble and should PASS, but if some feel compelled ˜˜ might bid 2. North knows South wants the next bid (from the redouble) but needs to define his hand, and thus, makes the planned jump rebid of spades to 3. South might actually give a second thought to slam at this point, but with East's opening values sitting over North's values (over/under concept) bids 4.

Play: On opening lead, East leads the A (promises K) and seeing the Q10xx in dummy shifts to hearts. This deal is a little tricky to play ... declarer (North) can ruff out diamonds (good transportation) setting up the Q for a club pitch or as in the play here run off winners forcing East to pitch diamonds or clubs and in the case here holding clubs as winners.

  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. transfer to clubs
  3. likes clubs
  4. control bid

Just last week I said "So many minor suit slams get played in 3NT, it is a sin." The bidding in this auction might seem advanced, but follow along.

Bidding: East with 17 hcp and a balanced hand opens the bidding 1NT. West with 7 hcp, 7 losers , A and 6 clubs can't pass and let this contract pass out in 1NT. West MUST realize he holds 11 support points for clubs and the partnership holds at least 9 clubs (7 + 2). Over 1NT, East/West playing 4-way transfers, West bids 2 as a transfer to clubs (not a relay to clubs). East with max values and A83 a high honor and 3 clubs bids 3 as type of superacceptance (but in the minors is called a preacceptance bid). If East had not liked clubs, East would have bid the next lower suit or 2NT.

Over 3 West cuebids the A and depending on partnership agreements, East can try for slam or just bid 5. If East tries to sign off in 3NT, West will bid 5. In either case the partnership should reach game in clubs. An aggressive partnership might reach 6 if East over 3 makes an attempt bidding 4 as Roman Keycard Minorwood .

Play: On the lead of a heart from South, East/West can be held to making 5. South can win the finesse for the K and return a second heart. On the lead of anything else declarer (East) can finesse for spades and run off clubs and North cannot hold enough cards to hearts and spades both.

Bidding: After two passes, East opens the bidding 1. South bids 2 as a Michaels Cuebid for spades and an undisclosed minor. West with 9 support points bids 4 to keep the spade bidders at bay, but North bids 4 anyway. East tries to double 4, but West takes it out in 5 knowing partner can convert to 5. West's bid of 5 might make it easier to find 6, but this is a really hard slam to bid.

Play: The play of this hand is really easy. Declarer (East) should be able to see from trick 1 that everything hinges on the placement of the K. As Soouth has already shown for spades and a minor North is marked for the K. On defense South leads the K which North overtakes with the A and returns a spade. East jumps up with the A and crosses to dummy with the a club and finesses for the K.

  1. Splinter 4 spades & 20-22 total points
  2. slam invitational

A lot of slams.

Bidding: Some might open North's hand with 11 high card points , but North has a little bit of a rebid problem in response to 1. East with 17 hcp opens the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid to Reverse into spades. South passes and West responds 1. East now with a 4-4 spade fit has 21 support points for spades, and thus, splinters with 4 as 4-card support for spades. West with just 7 support points could just bid 4, but West knows with East Splinter in diamonds they are playing with a 34 point deck (i.e, 30 hcp for spades, hearts and clubs and 4 hcp for the A), and thus, West bids 5 as invitational to 6, specifically asking East about his spade honors. East with 2 of the top 3 spades bids 6.

Play: North/South find the best defense they can with North leading the K which South overtakes with the A and returns the J exposing East/West to a heart loser. But this contract was always going to hinge on the finesse against the K.

  6. shows the Q but no biddable king

This auction starts off with a small lie.

Bidding: North with 16 high card points opens the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid to jump to 3. (East/West are silent throughout.) South in response bids 2 as 2/1 Game Forcing. South should have 5 clubs for the 2 bid, but 1NT Forcing just seemed an underbid. In a game forcing auction North would typically take his time and bid 2, but 2 could only be a 5-card suit so North jumps to 3 to show length. It is now easy for South to bid 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and North's response of 5 shows 3 keycards. South's 5 asks about the Q. North's 6 shows the Q, but not the K, K or K. It is now easy for South to bid 7. It is a little more dangerous, but many might bid 7NT.

Play: Not much to the play, north/South have 7 spades + 4 hearts + 3 diamonds + 2 clubs = 16 tricks ... that should be enough.
