  1. Weak hand

Most pairs should be able to find their way to 2 on this hand unless West bids an aggressive 1NT. East has a normal 1NT opening unless E/W are using a lower range for their 1NT opening. Assuming East opens 1, South should pass. I know a lot of players who double with any opening count in this situation, but South needs to have appropriate distribution, and with a 4333 hand, no four card major, and honors scattered everywhere, South has no reason to do anything but pass. West has enough tens that their hand just barely might qualify as being worth 6 HCP, but with no four card major and not a bid fit for s, West also has few reasons to bid. Yes, at this vulnerability it is often right to get the side to declare 1NT, but the bigger danger for West comes not when East passes, and the points are well balanced around the table, but instead when East has extra values and takes another bid, getting E/W too high. On the actual hand a 1NT bid might work out, as N/S well only set 1NT by one or two tricks and N/S will be shut out of the bidding.

If West passes, North can overcall 1, and South can cue bid 2 to show a good hand with support. West might double this, as East has opened 1, and West certainly prefers a bid, but whatever West chooses, North should sign off in 2. With North already a passed hand, South shouldn't be tempted to bid any further. East will lead a high whether West has doubled 2 or not, but seeing the dummy holding, should switch to s if West hs doubled. If East instead leads another high and then switches to s, declarer will have no problem making eight tricks. Declarer can lose a finesse, win the next and play two rounds of s ending in the South hand. Then declarer makes the key play of the Jack, pitching a loser from the North hand. This is known as a "loser on loser" play, and benefits declarer by setting up the 10. Declarer can use the King to get to dummy to pitch a loser on the 10. Although I expect a lot of +110 scores, it will still be a nice reward for declarer to find the loser on loser play.

E/W should end up in a contract on this hand, but getting to game will require either East or West to invite game. After East opens and West responds 1, North will be mildly tempted to bid, but what? Only a double has any appeal at all, and without four card support and with both opponents already having bid, North should just pass quietly. After East bids 1, West will have a decision to make. If the E/W agreements are that East will always rebid 1 even with a balanced hand, then West has a better than minimum hand with the void. However, if East is promising an unbalanced hand (with implied length), then having a void in your partner's primary suit is not usually a great asset, and the West hand isn't as good. Overall, I think that West should just bid 2. Now East will be the one with the decision. Game might have good play opposite as little as the QJ and the KJ, so it looks like East should at least invite. The best bid for East is 3, as this emphasizes that honors in the majors are important, rather than s. West has an easy game acceptance, but there will certainly be a lot of pairs who only play in a partscore.

As it happens, West's void is indeed the mixed blessing that it appears to be. On the surface, there are only two top losers, the King and the Ace, but there is also the Jack to worry about and also, where are declarers tricks going to come from? It looks like a cross ruff is best, but this won't allow declarer to take full advantage of the suit. The Ace is onside for a ruffing finesse and both minors are "breaking" as it were, but declarer can't easily set up either minor while still pulling trump. All in all, it should be a very good result for E/W to go +420.

  1. Checking back for majors

South should end up declaring at 3NT at most tables. North doesn't have a good enough suit to insist on s, but it will be a surprise to East to find out that s is the best contract looking at all four hands. In a contract, declarer can pitch a loser on a , and will only lose the top three trump. As it happens, against 3NT, the defense must lead s early to set up an extra trick for the defense. West is highly unlikely to find a lead, but it's possible that East will lead s when in with the first trick. This will hardly be obvious though, as East will have blown the suit if declarer's s are the QT or KT8. However, I think East can almost figure the hand out if they are thoughtful. Based on the bidding, West is marked with at most a one Queen or two Jacks. If this isn't the Queen, then declarer will have four tricks coming, with the suit splitting, four top minor suit tricks and at least one minor suit Queen, as well as the two tricks they are working on, a lot more tricks then they need. Similarly if West does have the Queen, then declarer has all of the other missing HCP and easily has all the rest of the tricks once the s are knocked out. So, East knows that the only hope for the defense is to find West's Queen immediately. If West has led a , it will be obvious that s are a lost cause, no matter which honor declarer wins the first trick with. So, that will just leave s and s for East to choose between. So, why should East choose s? Because East needs West to have both the Q and T for s to be the right switch, but in the suit, QT or Q8 are both sufficient for the defense to set up a trick. This is some pretty complicated analysis, and I suspect a lot of East's won't be able to figure all of that out. The simpler way for East to get it right is just to realize that with a better holding in his own hand, that s is most likely to be the right switch. On any other defense, declarer has time to knock out all three of East's honors to set up North'ss. It looks like +430 will be the most common score for N/S, and East will be well rewarded for finding the switch. .

  1. Transfer

Yes, yes, I know, the bidding diagram shows South taking a bid forcing his side to the three level, vulnerable, with 3 HCP, but bear with me. First, should North act over 1NT? North has the strength for a penalty double, but with no five card suit, and no clear lead and the possibility that this will give away the location of the HCP, this doesn't look like a good choice if it's even available. Most experts prefer to use a penalty double of 1NT to show a hand with both strength and trick taking potential, and not just a balanced strong NT unless better than the opening bidder's range. North might be tempted to show both majors if they can, but this is again a stretch, with two four card majors and so many HCP in the minors. On the actual hand, this would miss the best N/S fit, tempt the opposition to start in on the doubling, and discourage South from making any attempt to get to a better contract than 2.

Assuming North passes and East transfers to s and then passes, what can South deduce about the hand? North is marked with at least 14 HCP, but their average HCP are a good bit higher than that. Since North didn't bid over 1NT, it seems likely that they don't have a five card suit, which both suggests that North is balanced and also that E/W have successfully found a fit. So, South knows that North has a good hand and that a minor suit fit is likely. Yes, on a bad day, North will be 4432 and only have 14-15 HCP and three of a minor will be a disaster, but this is matchpoints, and you often have to play the odds at matchpoints, risking the occasional bad score. At IMPS, at this vulnerability, it would be a lot riskier for South to bid, but I actually think it's not a bad choice at matchpoints.

A contract can make if declarer is careful, but with five definite losers and a poor trump break, there are many pitfalls, including the possibility of North getting a ruff. If North starts with three rounds of s, this will be particularly problematic for declarer and I expect that many will go off one. However, 3 will still be a better result for N/S than defending 2, as 2 will not often go off more than one trick and 3 will easily make nine tricks. +110 should be well above average for N/S.
