Talk about a bad deal ... no no I mean like East/West get a bad deal on this deal ... oh, never mind!

Bidding: North deals and passes (there is no reason for North with just 9 high card points to take action in first seat). After East passes (two passes) South opens the bidding 1. West passes. North bids 2 as artificial (says nothing about clubs) Two-way Reverse Drury showing a 3-card limit raise in support of spades. South's bid of 2 shows a full opening hand, encouraging partner. There is no reason for West to insert a double of 2 as West will most certainly be on opening lead, but it is inserted here because some players just feel compelled! North with 11 support points might just bid 4, but in the auction here bids 4 showing good values, with clubs. South has no interest in slam and bids 4.

Play: West has no way of knowing the lie of the cards in this deal. Counting points from the auction North has 10-11 points, South has maybe 14-15-16 points and West has 7 hcp so East must have some values. Holding AQ103 it is not realistic for West to lead a diamond away from the AQ10 tenace on opening lead. With any opening lead, other than a diamond, declarer (South) has 6 spade tricks + A + 6 club tricks for 13 tricks, never touching diamonds.

This is an interesting deal, lets see if we can get to a 30 high card points slam.

Bidding: North deals and with 16 hcp and a balanced hand North opens the bidding 1NT. (East/West are silent throughout.) South with 14 hcp and a beautiful club suit KQJ1043 could bid 3NT (and North will pass) or 4NT Quantitative notrump bids (and North will still pass). With North opening 1NT, South has captaincy of the auction and South has too good of a hand to give up on (3NT) or transfer captaincy back to North (4NT).

South bids 2, playing Four-way Transfers, transferring North to clubs and North bids 3, playing pre-acceptances, showing North likes clubs and has a high club honor (A). South's bid a 3 is slam invitational showing a control in spades (A). North's 4 is RKC Minorwood for clubs and 4NT response is 2 keycards and the Q. North bids 6. Some partnerships might reach 6NT but 6NT requires a great leap of faith that the partnership has a stopper in diamonds, 6 is a safer contract than 6NT.

Play: There are two strategies of leading an ace against a slam ... in this case East with no better lead, leads the A to get a look at the board. If East does not lead the A declarer (North) has 3 spades + 2 hearts + 6 clubs and will therefore need to lead diamonds and just might get the diamonds wrong, losing 2 diamonds.

  1. Inverted Minor Suit Raise

This is potentially another sad deal (kinda a theme this week), but SuperMinorwood (ok Roman Keycard Minorwood) to the rescue.

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and North responds 2 as natural and forcing (GF or F1 ), an Inverted Minor Suit Raise. South's rebid of 2NT is conventional showing stoppers in both majors. If North with 17 high card points or 19 support points for diamonds blasts into 6 the partnership is off two keycards the A and the K. North's bid of 4 therefore is RKC Minorwood asking for keycards in diamonds. South's response of 4 (1430) shows 1 keycard. North's bid of 4NT must now be to play, as North had other options to continuing asking bids.

Play: There is not much to the play of this deal East/West have the right to win the A and the K. North/South are lucky in that North also holds the 10 or the contract might lose another diamond.

  3. heart stopper

This is another potentially sad deal. double dummy East/West can make a ton of tricks, but can they see through mirrors. First with North's preempt of 3, this is not an easy auction.

Bidding: West opens the bidding 1 and North grrrrrr overcalls 3 as preemptive. East makes a Negative Double and West is sorta stuck, but bids 3NT as the best descriptive bid (showing a heart stopper. East bid of 6NT is daring at best.

Down 1 — NS +50

Play: In the play of this deal declarer (West) decides since North preempted to finesse South for the Q right away, good. Declarer assumes club honors are split, so decides to finesse North for the Q, another good. So now spades must splits 3-3, another good. Counting cards North has 2 non-hearts left and South has no hearts. Declarer decides to rectify the count giving up a club. South wins the Q and returns a diamond. At5 this point declarer has made a valiant effort getting finesse correct and playing the cards, but knows South has the protected K and there is no way to pick up this. This was not a good slam, from the beginning it required waaaaaay to much manouvering and guessing.

One more final sad deal ... North with clearly the best hand at the table with 17 high card points and 6 losers is unfortunately in 4th seat.

Bidding: East with 11 hcp, a really nice heart suit AKJ952 and 6 losers opens the bidding 1. South passes. West with 10 support points and 4-card heart support has options. West could Splinter 4, but this is a marginal game forcing hand. West could make a Bergen Raises limit raise of 3/3. West, in this auction decides to bid out shape starting with 1. North is now kinda in the Twilight Zone (frozen in space and time) ... ok, North is stuck and passes. East is forced to bid and bids 2. West now makes and invitational bid of 3 and East accepts 4.

North should figure out from the auction that this is a distributional deal, but with 4 Quick Tricks doubles 4, for penalty. What North should do is bid 4NT for takeout for the minors and South will bid 5, a good sacrifice even doubled, but as I said "You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind ... that's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Twilight Zone!"

ok ok ok ... enough of the Twilight Zone!

Made 4 — NS −590

Play: This is not a hard deal to play. With singletons in both clubs and diamonds declarer (East) only loses 1 spade, 1 diamond and 1 club, making 4 (doubled).
