  1. Minimal competitive hand, any suit

Each pair might end up in a major suit contract at the three level on this hand. Assuming E/W are using a strong NT opening, most East pairs will open 1. The opening bid will make it impossible for South to show both of their suits even if they were inclined too and a 1 overcall looks pretty normal. The West hand is a close call whether to make a Negative Double . It would be better if West had more support for s, as the West hand doesn't look great if East rebids 2. At this vulnerability, I would double anyway, as my hand is appropriate for either s or s, but it would be more dangerous to bid with the East hand if E/W were vulnerable. North also has a questionable raise to 2, with a 4333 hand, only 5 HCP including some poor looking holdings in the red suits. I wouldn't fault either West or North for passing and would be especially likely to pass with the North hand if West hand passed. Assuming West has doubled and North has raised to 2, what should East do? East would like to bid 3, but is their hand good enough? Most experts solve competitive problems like this using an agreement known as "Good/Bad 2NT". Under this agreement, in many competitive auctions where it's necessary to compete at the three level, a 2NT bid is used to distinguish good hands from minimum hands that just want to compete. Some pairs use 2NT for the weaker hands and other pairs use 2NT for the stronger hands. There are advantages to each approach, and if this is something you are interested in adding to your bidding arsenal, I encourage you to look into this further. The bidding diagram shows the "Bad" 2NT approach, where East is showing a hand that wants to compete over 2 but isn't particularly strong (i.e. doesn't want to invite game.) West is forced to bid 3 or 3 unless they have extra strength, and now East is able to bid 3, showing a minimum hand with s.

This bidding option won't be available to all pairs, and some South players might compete to 3, so I can see the final contract being 2, 3, or 3. It's hard to see how E/W can double a contract, although a lead from West will hold declarer to seven tricks. In a contract, if declarer starts trump with the Ace, perhaps aided by South's bidding, they will be able to make 10 tricks. More likely, declarer will lose two tricks in each major and end up +140.

  1. Lead anti-directing

N/S should have no problems getting to game on this hand. East will open 1 at most tables and South will have to decide between doubling and bidding 1. If South bids 1 and the bidding is at 2 when they next get to bid, they are probably strong enough to double, though the vulnerability isn't friendly. South wouldn't be happy bidding again over 3. So, South has to decide now whether to risk missing a 5-3 fit, or risk missing a 4-4 fit. If South doubles, North will bid 3NT and South will be forced to pass. If South overcalls 1, North will drive to game. Assuming North doesn't just bid 3NT, N/S will end up in 4, as South will not pass 3NT knowing that there is a fit, if North offers a choice of games. Note by the way that although E/W will basically not bid at all after East's opening bid, I've shown East doubling a 3 bid by North. Most experts play that if they double a cue bid by the opponents at the three level or higher that it suggests their partner lead ANOTHER suit. After all, West would normally lead a , so there is no need to double for a lead. This is known as a "Lead anti-directing double." Note though, that you need to be careful when you use it. On the actual hand, a good N/S pair might redouble 3 and if they play there, 3 will make 11 tricks for a top for N/S. So, the double shown in the bidding diagram is to illustrate the concept of a lead anti-directing double, but is not strongly recommended on the actual hand.

In any contract (s, s, NT or even s) careful play by declarer will lead to 10 tricks. The defense won't be capable of setting up all three of the major suit tricks. For example, even if West leads a against 4, declarer can go up with the Ace, take the finesse, then play a and pitch all of their losers on s before leading a . This play will be aided by the opening bid by East. On a lead, it will be even easier for declarer, as they can win and lead a right away, planning to pitch the and take the finesse later. A NT contract by North is similarly easy to play, and +660 should be a very good matchpoint score as most will play in a contract.

  1. Four s, Five s, game forcing

3NT looks like a normal E/W contract, though it happens on the lie of the cards that playing in either major can, in theory, make an extra trick relative to a NT contract. West has a normal 1NT opening and East will look for a major suit contract. Many experts play a convention known as "Smolen ". Under this agreement, East can start with a Stayman 2 bid. If West bids a major, then East has found their fit, but if West bids 2, as on the actual hand, then Smolen can be used. East bids their four card major at the three level, promising that they have five cards in the other major (and four cards in the major that they bid, since they started with Stayman.) With a fit for neither major, West will bid 3NT which will end the bidding. North does best to lead a against 3NT and South will win and start on the suit. North can win the fourth round of the suit and if they cash out their high , then declarer will have no problem making 11 tricks. If instead they lead a , declarer can theoretically take a double finesse in s and end up with 12 tricks, but in practice, will be worried about South winning a and leading a through the Jack. Declarer might instead cash out their long and both of the other tricks and now North will be under some discarding pressure. Combined with declarer's knowledge about North's distribution (from the opening lead and the play in the black suits), declarer still might end up with 12 tricks, but some will certainly end up with only 11 tricks, or possibly just 10. If North leads a despite East showing four of them, declarer will have an easy time getting to 12 tricks. If North leads a , declarer also has a good chance to get to 12 tricks, depending on what North leads when they get in with their . Overall, it looks like +690 will be a somewhat rare and good score for N/S.

Pass2All pass

Both sides can make a part score on this hand, but it will be passed out at many tables. For pairs who like to open light, both West and East will be able to open, but for most pairs, either hand will be too weak, and East won't be inclined to open when vulnerable in third seat with less than a normal opening count and no five card suit. If East does open, it's hard to see how E/W don't end up in 3, but since this is unlikely to be doubled by N/S, this might be a better result than if East passes. Assuming the first three players pass, should South bid? Many players will have been taught the "Rule of 15". Under this guideline, a fourth seat hand should be opened when the HCP plus the number of s is 15 or more. The South hand just barely qualifies, having 10 HCP and five s. The other reason to open the South hand is that South will also be happy with a or contract. If South's distribution were instead 5233 for instance, it would be a much riskier opening bid. If South does open 1 and North raises to 2, N/S might be allowed to play there, given the vulnerability. It's also not unreasonable for West to reopen with a double over a 2 bid. The vulnerability is worrisome and indeed, as mentioned earlier, if N/S are doubled in 3, this will not be a good result for them. If E/W get to play 3 undoubled, this will be much better, as careful declarers can make 2. The key to making 2 is being careful to get a ruff in the North hand. Let's say that West leads a high and continues the suit. Declarer needs to ruff, lead a to the Ace and take a finesse. When this holds, declarer should lead another high and then a third round of the suit. This will allow declarer to ruff the fourth round of s and East will be overruffing with a natural trump trick. It will work out to lead a 2nd round of trump on this hand, but if West has switched to a at trick 2, then declarer must not lead a 2nd round of trump before leading the second and third round of s. If they do lead a 2nd round of trump, then West can win the third , lead a to East and East can pull dummy's last trump, leaving declarer with a loser. All in all, +110 should be a good score for N/S.
