We think many Easts will bid the game because of the shape of their hand. They need little from partner and partner has shown little. However Since West did not bid spades she must have some cards in the minors and an ace or a king in the minor suits will prove useful.

South does not have a palatable lead but lead she must and we think she'll start a club or a diamond. Let's allow South to lead a club, best for the defense.

Declarer will win, unblock the K and exit a spade. South will win, cash one club and exit a heart. Declarer will win this to ruff a spade and discard a spade on dummy's A.

Declarer can come to her hand to cash a top heart however she must lose one more heart but he will make her contract.

There is an interesting line if South's opening lead is a heart. This puts pressure on declarer and may prevent her from ruffing a spade in dummy. Declarer will win the heart lead, unblock the K. She must exit the K to make her contract as South will win the spade but cannot play a second round of heart. We don't expect this to happen at the table. In practice East will exit a low spade. North will win and exit a heart. (This play gives up her heart trick but gains by winning spade tricks.) Now the defense will score three spades and one club to set the contract.

East has two suits so she opens 1. The partnership gets to the notrump game.

On the above auction North will lead a diamond, the unbid suit. Oops! for the defense as declarer will now make 10 tricks. She will win the diamond opening in hand and place the 10 on the table. South will win and return a diamond.

Declarer will take her second diamond and cash her top tricks in spades, and clubs. South must discard two diamonds and one heart as she must keep her long spade lest declarer make yet another overtrick.

South will feel the pressure but we think most will get it right.

Pairs playing Standard will have the same auction however the 1NT by West will not be played as forcing.

North will lead a heart which will be won in dummy. Interestingly the defense can score two more heart tricks however for this to happen North must overtake her partner's queen. To make matters worse for the defense this play will establish three heart tricks for declarer. South may see this and can help partner by dropping her Q under the king. Now when South gaind the lead she cah play a heart. West will be forced to play a high heart from her hand to prevent the defense from scoring three heart tricks.

West has a lot of work to do to come to nine tricks. She will be very busy taking finesses. Upon winning the opening heart lead she will immediately lead a club toward her queen. This will give her two club tricks. She can cash the K and take the diamond finesse for three more tricks an she ccan win four spades by leading the 10 and overtaking the jack in dummy. She can later repeat the spade finesse.

Timing is important on this board. Dummy will win the first heart followed by the club play. Declarer will regain the lead to make the spade play. She can the unravel her tricks and she should win 10 tricks on this board.

There are several lines in which the defense can win four tricks however they all require North to cash her A. That will happen only if North's opening lead is something other than a heart. We don't expect that to happen at the table.

North uses Stayman to inquire about a four card major in the south hand. When North jumps to the notrump game South knows that her partner holds four spades else she would not have make the inquiry.

West will lead a club for lack of anything better to try. East knows her partner has little to contribute on this board. She's holds 14 HCPs and the offense bid game. East knows her partner holds at most one jack. So East will defend passively and wait for her tricks. She sees she will win one heart and two diamonds and that the contract is likely going to succeed.

There's little to the play of the board. Declarer must lose the three obvious tricks. She has no place to park any of her losers. She cannot misplay the heart suit. She cannot misplay trump.

East opens and West has visions of slam. She bids her diamond suit. (Some pairs may use transfers in this situation.) East will either support diamonds or show interest in the suit if the partnership uses transfers.

East bids the slam because 6 always makes. (Okay, perhaps West will check for keycards prior to bidding the slam but telling partner that 6 always makes is more fun.)

Twelve top tricks are easily available and there is an interesting squeeze for the thirteenth. Declarer can win the opening lead, draw trump, cash the good clubs and run three diamonds to produce a five card ending.

Declarer will keep her spade, three hearts and one diamond. Dummy keeps three spades and two hearts.

Let's look at what happens to the opponents. South must keep three spades else declarer can play a spade to the ace and ruff a spade. Dummy's Q is not high and declarer has the K as an entry. So South keeps three spades and two hearts.

North must keep three hearts lest declarer score three heart tricks so she can only keep two spades.

West now plays a spade to the ace and leads the Q smothering the jack in North's hand. It doesn't matter whether South covers as declarer has her thirteenth trick.

We have a competitive auction on this board. East will open. Some Souths will over call 2 however we prefer (only slightly) to pass. (We don't want to encourage partner to lead a diamond should we end on defense.)

North also has an option as how to best get her side in the auction. She can try double as in our diagram or she can bid a balancing 1NT, Most pairs play this as showing 11 - 14 HCPs in balancing seat and of course it shows the heart stopper.

Regardless how the partnership proceeds we expect NS to get to the notrump game.

The defense will lead a heart and the race is on. It appears the defense may come to three hearts and two diamonds to set the contract.

Declarer should realize that it appears hearts are 5 - 3. If that is correct the defense will prevail in establishing the heart suit. Holding up will not prevent the defense from cashing enough winners to set the contract.

The route to nine tricks for declarer is to cash four spade tricks before deciding how to continue. If East discards one heart declarer can now afford to go after diamonds. The defense will only cash two hearts and two diamonds. If instead East discards one diamond and two clubs declarer can go after the club suit. This line will allow her to win four spades, two hearts and three clubs.

This is not an obvious line. Many declarers will not find the successful line.

There aren't too many 12 HCP hands which we would pass however we think South holds one of them this afternoon. We would not object to South passing in first seat and catching up later in the auction.

Regardless of South's action the partnership will end in the notrump game.

There is a fortunate layout for declarer on this board. Although the defense can establish the spade suit West has no entry and will not be able to cash any spade tricks.

For lack of anything better East will lead a club. Declarer will win when West covers an honor played from dummy and attack hearts establishing the suit for four tricks.

When next in hand North will try the diamond finesse. This works and will provide four more tricks for the cause.

Declarer will come to 10 or 11 tricks depending upon whether West shifts to a spade when she wins the A. If West does play a spade, declarer will most likely play low however should she rise with the ace and take the diamond finesse she will come to 11 tricks.

South will not bid 3 directly however she will use whatever methods the partnership employs to show a three card Limit Raise.

North will accept the game invitation as she has a great hand. Most of her values are in aces and kings and she has a second suit.

The layout is friendly for declarer. If East attacks diamonds, declarer will play low from dummy.West will win her Q however declarer now has two diamond tricks (by repeating the diamond finesse) and a parking spot for a losing heart.

Declarer will draw trump ending in dummy. She will then lead a club to the queen. This will lose however when she later cashes the A, West's jack will fall and dummy's 10 will grow into a trick. With the suit splitting 3 - 3 declarer will win three club tricks.

If the defense doesn't attack hearts early declarer may win 11 tricks on this board.

West has the classic problem of holding a 16 HCP hand with five spades. She opens 1NT to get her values on the table as opening 1 would create a rebid problem for her.

North's opening lead will be the Q.. She leads the top of her suit since she has outside entries to her hand. Declarer will win the trick.

There is a lot of work to do on this board. West must find the Q. She must either knockout the A or take the diamond finesse or both.

Declarer will probably start by cashing her spades. With nine cards in the suit and no inferences from the auction West will likely play the AK, dropping the queen.

There is no reason for her no to try the diamond finesse. If she cashes the ace she will lose a diamond trick. So at some point she will try the finesse which of course works. She will also lead clubs toward her hand, losing to North ace.

West will lose two clubs on this board to make an overtrick.

There are partnerships who require a better heart holding to preempt in first and second seat. Those Wests will pass their hand. The partnership should still get to the notrump game.

The defense could win three tricks on this board however we don't expect that to happen at very many tables. South's best lead is a heart. The defense will win two hearts and one club.

South will lead a club to start the defense. It matters not what North pays as the lead will give declarer two club tricks. If North takes her ace East has the two top clubs. If North plays the 9 declarer will win the 10 and can force another club trick by playing a high club immediately.North can take her ace but cannot successfully attack hearts.

Declarer has five diamonds and four spades as those suits split favorably.

A simple auction will get NS to the heart partial.

The layout is very favorable for declarer and she will be making overtricks on this board.

The heart suit will be easily solved since West holds the doubleton Q10. Declarer cannot get the suit wrong.

West has a difficult lead. If she leads the J she gives the position of the 10 away and declarer will surely know how to continue the spade suit. She will come to her hand and lead a spade toward dummy, finessing if necessary. She will be able to discard a club from her hand.

The club suit also plays itself. Declarer will lead clubs from dummy toward her hand. If East plays low declarer will win one club trick whether she follows with the Q or the 10.

West may lead a diamond. This too helps declarer who will now win three diamond tricks, discarding a club from dummy. This will restrict her club losers to two since if she leads clubs toward her hand East will now take her high clubs. Declarer can ruff her fourth club.

One possible line at the table may be for West to lead a diamonds. Declarer will win, draw trump ending in dummy to lead a club toward her hand. East will duck. Declarer will win her club trick. Cash her good diamonds discarding a club from dummy and she can now lead a spade toward dummy.

She has several lines to 11 tricks depending upon how the defense chooses to play.
